So hundreds of people gather together and queue up for masks to protect themselves from this virus.

Could be more risk in loads of people gathering and queuing closely together than not having a mask in the first place??

Exactly. What they are doing queuing defeats the purpose of having a mask

Hong Kong has closed it's border to all arrivals from South Korea.

Won't do the same for China of course were only some entry points are closed.

The Italy v Ireland rugby match conundrum got me thinking: Are there any provisions within the treaties and laws around the EU free movement of people which would allow governments to ban incoming travel from other EU jurisdictions on the grounds of trying to contain a potential infectious disease outbreak? Could the Irish government unilaterally declare "nobody from X cities in Italy" or even "nobody from Italy in general" may enter the country for any reason until the threat is deemed to have lessened due to X, Y or Z criteria?

I have no idea which sections of EU law or treaty one would need to cite in order to answer this, hence answering it here. My immediate gut instinct is that free movement is an absolute and exceptions like this wouldn't be allowed, but then again EU law tends to have many "contingency" clauses which allow even the major provisions to be suspended or overlooked in truly exceptional cases such as this.

    @hatrick
Good question, guess declaring a pandemic overrules that
But who's gonna stop a country closing their borders for a highly infectious and deadly disease, like feck the who

China trying to infer it's not that unusual in the crisis. Except of course for being the source and in other ways.

If its not N95/FFP3 rated then you've just wasted cash.

Also, I think people have to remember that while we're all trying to not catch it, chances are we eventually will. The efforts to not catch will slow the spread and ease the strain on health services. I've noticed a few friends and people from work having the "I'll do all these things and not get it" mentality where I think they'll be sorely mistaken, and probably surprised considering the effects on most people are mild.

Good for you, will you do a bit of floor sanding for me?

The only way to avoid the disease is to avoid a carrier. Its that simple.

Easier said than done, what do you look out for, clouds of microbes floating around people. :)

The only thing wearing a DIY dustmask will get you is killed by the bus you don't see through your fogged up visor.

We're lucky in Ireland, we're an island at the end of a continent. If things heat up, we throw the switch on air and sea port closures and it as good as quarantines us and easily isolates any cases that may have been identified.

In that event, a ban on public gatherings, limitations to schooling and work will follow and self isolation will be the strategy until the cases on the island expire. I've already overstocked on non perishable foods, water and basic medications to allow for this. Thats what i intend to do, not invest in some prophylactic measures that are entirely useless and mix in public places anyway.

as far as I know, if the government declare an emergency, they can enact any temporary measures they deem necessary, but they have to pass a bill to declare an emergency first,

So less new cases with South Korea which is a good sign. Probably because they have tested all that church which initially spread it.

Onto Italy next. Iran seems to be the one to watch most though. The death rate is too high for them to have accurate reports of total infected

Isn't N95 the US equivalent of FFP2 basically, and not FFP3?

Here's a good link that explains them all:

Good chance that today will be the day.
Guy being quarantined in a Dub hospital last night - recently landed from Singapore and showing symptoms.

Not scare mongering, just passing on info.
It is inevitable that there will be case(s) here so maybe one will actually force protocols to be enacted.

Good to hear he was quarantined but hes not the person we need to worry about, its the likely asymptomatic person or persons who flew in from Italy last week.

Yeah probably- just passing on a bit of info.
It is inevitable though so we will prob get cases originating from Italy and other locations.

Yep because when these cases start to appear, we have an inadequate amount of icu beds according to Tom Ryan of St. James' Hospital, and will find it difficult to cope

Italy actually declared a state of Emergency re Coronavirus on January 31st even though they only had 2/3 Cases then. But by doing that, it gave them the necessary powers to lockdown those towns last weekend.

    Morning.
Still alive today, but I feel the end is near!!!!

If you take a random sample of 1 person who died from this, thats 1/1 death rate = 100% !!!!!!

This is worse then captain Tripps, that only had a death rate of 99.9999% ...

Chinese neighbours had groceries delivered and they were left outside the door, bell rang and the deliver driver run away. Weird.

My groceries are left on the driveway and the van drives off, as the norm.

Statement from the World Health Organisation

'WHO says it no longer has a process to declare a pandemic, says old system with 6 phases is no longer being used' - Reuters

In other News - Builder Providers will no longer be calling a spade - 'a spade' due to new descriptions of digging implements being adopted - reason? well just because!

How did they identify this person? Was it control measures from the inbound flight? or did he just come forward?
A positive that he is in quarantine and being tested
