UK declares ‘coronavirus outbreak a serious and imminent threat to public health.’

Under the measures announced on Monday, the Department of Health said people with coronavirus can now be forcibly quarantined and will not be free to leave, and can be forcibly sent into isolation if they pose a threat to public health.

A spokesman said: “Our infection control procedures are world leading and the NHS is well prepared to deal with novel coronavirus.

“We are strengthening our regulations so we can keep individuals in supported isolation for their own safety and if public health professionals consider they may be at risk of spreading the virus to other members of the public.”

"Coronavirus poses a serious and imminent threat to public health in the UK, the government declared as it introduced new powers to forcibly quarantine people.

Health secretary Matt Hancock and his Department have designated Arrowe Park Hospital in Merseyside and Kents Hill Park conference centre as “isolation” facilities”.

On Sunday the passengers from the RAF Brize which landed in Oxfordshire – 105 British nationals and 95 European nationals and family members – were taken to the Kents Hill Park hotel and conference centre in Milton Keynes to begin 14 days in quarantine.

Meanwhile 78 UK passport holders were among more than 3,600 people stuck on board the quarantined cruise ship Diamond Princess in Yokohama. There are now 130 confirmed cases on the ship.

The UK’s Department of Health and Social Care said in a statement:

“The British Secretary of State declares that the incidence or transmission of novel Coronavirus constitutes a serious and imminent threat to public health and these regulations are considered as an effective means of delaying or preventing further transmission of the virus.”
People with coronavirus can be forcibly sent into isolation if they pose a threat to public health and will not be free to leave quarantine.”

That's pretty bad. I mean, we can say whole China is on lockdown at this stage. Will be interesting how that will effect the world economy. Could be pretty bad, kind of every country in the world is doing im-/export with china more or less...maybe more a subject for the economy forum.

Because you can't just stop an economy forever . Even though there is that danger you still need to work to afford food /heat

I would hate to be on that Japanese cruise ship. You would feel like you are just waiting around to catch the virus and die as they won't let you leave.

It's messed up as they don't want to let anyone off out of fear someone may have it, but that they don't care about everyone getting it at the same time by keeping them on.

Unfortunately that's the nature of quarantine and always has been.

You're exposing a small number to high risk in the hope of preventing risk spreading to everyone else.

If they let them off the ship, and the virus spreads to the general population, they'd be exposed regardless.
It's a case of least worst option.
