    Leave it to the Irish

While his performance that day was disgraceful and he was massively out of his depth, in fairness to Cowen, I think Bertie threw him under the bus when he saw the (economic) winds changing and legged it.

FG of course rely on such trips down memory lane, but while they're right to a point - it's really just to deflect attention from their own scandals, waste, incompetence.

Dunno about a homerun to be fair, Delaney went on a slice of his bender whilst under Leo's tenure as sports minister.

Ireland could do with a Monster Raving Loony Party (a different one from the National Party).

Yes, why not? Work for your money - especially the youth - some of them came out of school straight into the welfare office - they have no skills, no experience, some are illiterate, can’t dress for work etc. Why not have them join the county councils as trainees, learning gardening, maintenance jobs, office work, etc. Social welfare is supposed to help you until you get a job - not be a career move. Don’t make it attractive to be on the dole. And let our indigenous brethren join in as well - everyone should work.

Agreed nobody should get anything for doing nothing , except the disabled , elderly , sick

I was predicting the rise of SF for a few years now as I draw many similarities between Irish and Spanish politics.

The rise of the socialists there in the 30s is similar to the rise of SF. The socialists looked to redistribute wealth, particularly farmers land.

That in turn led to a reaction by many Spanish that led to Falange Espanola and the Carlists linking up with the Spanish army of Africa and Franco.

So SF may get into power but they may face a backlash

When you hit 65 and have to retire you will then be means tested for the dole after 9 months on it and if you have provided savings for your future will get no dole after this time and next payment will be pension years later.

I don't disagree with paying to see a gp, northern Ireland is a joke doctors surgery awash with people (speaking from experience), don't pay for doctors visit and don't pay for a prescription.

I used to live in a country with excellent health care. Either a gp visit or an xray came with a nominal fee of 5 quid. Probably equivalent of 15 quid here. Enough to make you think twice for juniors sniffles but not a barrier for anyone who was sick.

They need to do that for everyone.

Ah the real world. Where bankers, property developers and corrupt politicians can live without fear of being held accountable for the damage they have done and continue to do to this country.

The economy.. neither FG or FF covered themselves in glory in the last 40 years. FF 2002-2010 and FG 1982-1987.

And God knows what SF would do.

In countries where the system actually works, yes. It doesn't here.

But it'll cost a hell of a lot less with vastly better outcomes to fix that - either by making the Air Corps attractive enough for pilots not to leave or getting someone like CHC to do it - than to try make the regional/rural A&Es function to an acceptable level.

I really dont think it would work. You thin a helicopter pilot/crew will land in unknown terrain in a rural area at nighttime without clear visibility of any obstacles?

I see the medivac helicopter working from Athlone every day, and its an absolutely superb service, but not at night....

People are nostalgic about Vincent. He was a terrible presenter who mistook bluster and outrage for political debate.

    MM is a pure waffler.
He's like a middle manager spouting the latest buzzwords.

Scary that we're on the brink of returning the people that drove the country into the gutter back to power.

    Straight out of Gerrys book.

She's has been talking to alot of people, people who have no facts or figures to back up anything

Slightly off topic but why is unemployment benefit never reduced in times of near full employment?

Nobody who is in receipt if unemployment benefit should struggle to find a job when that is the economic situation. Those who can't work should be on disability instead.

There will always be those that can’t work for lots of reasons health, etc but that would be aa small minority of the population - everyone else get off your hole and contribute. No free anything. You want to see aa dr and have a medical card, pay 10 euro. You want a prescription, pay 2 euro per prescription. Nothing for free.

    'People are living longer'

That really shooting yourself in the foot. It just puts a non-event taking up a seat, reducing the options to form a stable competent government. I would advise spoliing your vote is a less harmful venting of your frustration.

Lots of undesirables around my area using hunting as a guise , I understand foxes need to be culled but there might be better ways than running them ragged by a pack of dogs

The hunters Mary Lou wants to stop are the daytime Hunter's, not the crew hunting at night
