    Good point.

Could be worthwhile with the proposed Broadcasting Commission.

Having said that I expect most canvassers won't be too well versed on it.

Why did you pay for a TV if you don't use it?

Or as we have seen recently if you take part in an acid attack on a young man nearly blinding him and leaving mental and physical scars for life you get off on a a caution. Fcuking unreal.

New broadcasting laws not in yet so for now you only need a license if you have a tv or other device capable of receiving a signal via ariel, satellite or cable. Does not matter if its broken or not used. So computers, phones, tablets are generally exempt. If you refuse to pay you are fined. If you continue to refuse, not pay the fine etc.. you get locked up.

This will change in 5 years to a device independent broadcasting fee though. So if you have broadband or mobile data you will have to pay.

Well those utter gouging cunts can fuck right off. I don't own a TV and I never and I mean never watch RTE online and never will. Never mind that their RTE player is apparently pure muck by all accounts, and has ads I gather? No doubt the player was provided through a backhander to a friend of a friend of some gouging gombeen prick in Montrose or what passes for our government.

This "broadcasting fee" is just another gouge tax by our government to keep that pile of ****e RTE afloat and they can eff off, because I will not pay it. If the people of this nation had any stones they'd do similar as happened with the water charges - which would have been of significantly more value to the nation, if Irish water was run properly. And pigs might fly - and en masse simply not pay.

It's crooked when RTE have ads, sponsorship for their shows and additionally take out the collection basket run premium rate numbers to generate cash.

Just to answer few questions and few points on here.

I Baught licence today, but I wouldn't have if I wouldn't have a child. I'd rather go for free B&B. And then paid return trip home.

I questioned why is there such charge and why can't that be subscribtion service - RTE. I don't watch it and don't have reason to.

I just came on here to tell - who ever needs to hear it that they are clamping down big time. And maybe keep blinds down or get privacy film.

Also I was not home when inspector had called. However in some magical way - fairy taht he was he was able to tell that there was one in my kitchen. Witch could have been seen only from rear...

If you got a summons, then you should have opened the door to him and given your name.

They are very sly about this.

I got a letter saying I was in possession of an unlicensed TV or whatever way its worded.

I phoned and they insisted the woman who opened the door said she was me according to their Inspector.

Conveniently enough, they called on a Saturday as most people could prove they were at work during the week.

I produced my flight boarding card, showing I was in the air when he was supposedly knocking at the door talking to me. Funny enough, I live alone and the alarm did not ring off.

Well, they backed off pretty promptly.

OP, I'd do a SAR request and see what comes up.

I don’t ever watch tv, I don’t have cable, satellite etc but I I watch Netflix and Prime. I pay 13.33 every month and I’m just so used to it at this point, it doesn’t upset me. It’s just one of those things that you have to do just because. It won’t change and you have to do it, this is the law. Just pay for it and save yourself the headaches for the future.

It doesn't matter if you never use the TV.
If it is in your house you must pay.

Bollocks. It's a stupid law and stupid tax and it is the duty of every citizen to resist such laws. And we've done it before. Back in the 80's the government wanted to bring in a fishing licence for trout and anglers said nope, refused to pay it, to the degree that a few inspectors were threatened and they quietly dropped it after two years of no shows. The water charges got dropped too. And this RTE gravy train has gone on long enough and is of far less value to this nation than the above two, so yes we should tell them to fcuk off and mean it. If it were a subscription charge well then OK, but why the hell should anyone pay for a service that they do not use? It's insanity. To take one of the examples above that would be like you having to pay for a fishing licence when you have never gone nor intend to go fishing.

Not if you tell them you don't have one. I don't understand how anyone can get caught when all you have to do is tell a very small lie.

How did you get caught? When an inspector calls to the door, a simple "no, I don't have a television" usually suffices. Followed by "no, you can't enter my home, goodbye" if necessary.

Have you done this many times in the past or was it more of a happened in your head kind of situation?

I've never had to. I did fill out a 'legal notice' that they sent me, stating that I don't have a television.

Well there is that. I actually don't have a telly. Got rid a few years ago and I got a letter about it and I rang and the lass on the other end was helpful, sent out a I Don't Have A TV declaration form for me to sign, which I did. Job done. I get the declaration form for me to sign every year. No problem. Never had an inspector to the door. Then again no worries if I did, cos I don't have a telly.

The BBC are getting their annual licence fee increase. The last time RTE got an increase was a €2 increase in 2008.

Yes I know. But why would you buy something you know you are not going to use? Seems a bigger waste of money to me than a TV licence.

Need some advice boys. Started renting a room in a house recently. It seems for 2018 a tv licence was paid for. I've found letters in the house telling us we 'urgently' need to renew the licence.

It seems we went all of 2019 without a licence. Will they eventually just send take us to court or do they have prove we have the tv again? How does this work?

The licence is in the landlord's name and the other lads don't seem too concerned about paying.

Can we just chance not paying?

You would be better off asking in the TV Licence thread.

Alternatively - and I know this might sound a little mad - buy a TV licence.

I've done it numerous times. I don't have a TV so that's all they need to know.

    "Can I have your name?"

    "No, bye now""

Why do you think anyone would feel the need to over explain themselves to some random door knocker.

So is it a Thursday or Friday you will be appearing ?

Ct8 is on the ground floor in the four courts, if you go through the security entrance where the cars drive in (it's called Morgan place) it's easier to get to ct8, until 10am it's the only entrance for the public.
Can't remember if it's 10 or 10.30 start... But you will be part of a list of people, so it's possible you may not be out until 12-1pm.

Parking outside the courts is €3.20hr (on street parking and clampers are around at least twice a day), there is a Luas stop at the back of the courts and several bus stops in the front of the courts, other parking options include a car park in the Jervis shopping centre, parking in car park on ushers quay behind petrol station, Smithfield car park.

One piece of advice, turning up is half the battle
.. most people that fail to turn up get heavy fines, some of those that do turn up have their cases struck out, the judge is a nice guy and will listen to whatever you want to say but remember that he is there to enforce the law.... We have courts of law not courts of justice, so if they law says you are wrong then most of the time it doesn't matter what reason you have the law is enforced.

Get yourself a TV licence and show it to the licence people before the case is heard.

I just find this a bit hard to believe.
How does anybody get caught if it's as easy as saying I don't have a telly?

    I think it's honesty.

I dont have a TV, so I can honestly say I dont have a TV. I'm not a liar, so I'm not going to lie.

When the inspector knocks, most people (if they have a TV) are not going to lie and I reckon most blame their husband or wife and when the letter comes they just buy it.

People are afraid of confrontation. I dont recall anywhere in law that you have to give your name to a TV license inspector, so no.

When the guy asked for my name, I said "no, I'm not giving my name."

He said 'ok, we can do this two ways'

I said, 'ok, bye ' and shut the door. He was shouting in the letterbox.

Not entertaining bull**** at my own front door.

I've never tried it, but I believe you don't even have to tell a lie. If you say "I'm not answering that" they can't compel you. They can't enter your house without permission as they would need a search warrant.

I prefer to pay for the license rather than have the stress.

The BBC produces some world class TV and Radio and educational services. RTE.... Doesn't, or does so by mistake when their anti talent radar fails to spot actual talent in an outside of Montrose production company they bring in.

I would have no great objection with a small cost towards funding TnG, because they do provide a service and on a showstring(but looks more expensive than it is). And I don't even speak Irish, but I can see the value in it. RTE? The best talent they had has left, retired or died. When you have utter quarter wits like Ray D'Arcy and Ryan I'm related to the Kennedys y'know Tubridy, who couldn't ask a probing question with a gun to his head, then no, GTFO Arr Tee Eeeeee.

:D True, though I am more wont to have a rant in Real Life(tm). Picture a taller thinner more mobile on my feet Hitler in full flight. But RTE take the bloody biscuit as far as I'm concerned. A jobs for the boys gombeen outfit from Old Ireland who have rarely asked important questions of the government de jour and provide little by way of good quality homegrown talent(and what there is comes from outside the kip).

who owns the tv you have in the house? if the landlord owns it, it is then up to him/her to pay the licence as far as im aware. when i got home from college a few years ago the tv licence guy was waiting outside the house i rented in a car, he got out and told me who he was, he said dont worry you arent in trouble, it is the landlord who must pay the licence and that is what happened, the tv was already in the house when we moved in. the landlord had told us he had the tv licence paid for when we moved in.

my uncle didnt pay the tv licence the last few years of his life, they kept sending him warning letters etc he just threw them in the bin. he never went to court over it.

Just on the whole “oh we have to pay for the talent or they will leave” shtick, does anyone notice that much of a difference in interviews given my small time radio hosts down the country compared with RTE.

I do see the need for a national broadcaster however RTE have lost their way.

It is a small cost, if you measure the daily output. Other people like the bits that you don't like. The listening and viewing figures prove that. But the system would not work if everyone got to pick and choose only to pay for the bits they like.
