It has happened. I got summons to appear in court. What a load of b.... How is this even legal to ask to pay for something I don't use?
Shouldn't that be included in price you pay for your device?
    Madness. Its 160e.
Not only now its not only tv licence but a bloody laptop. Like wtf?

Did you get a summons for watching tv on your laptop or for having an unlicensed tv?

If you don't use the service dont pay for it. Go to court.

You don't need a tv license for a laptop

Were you watching TV or not? Did the following apply?
Connecting a SKY/Virgin Media/Saorview or any type of Digital TV Receiver to your monitor
Viewing any TV Programmes broadcast for general reception over broadband (e.g. Eir TV/Vodafone TV) on your monitor requires a TV Licence.

But the TV license pays for RTE , that's always been the father's argument when he begrudgingly pays it , never watches RTE but pays monthly for sky

Bad advice, will always end up paying more if you go to court and you still have to buy the licence anyway.

Just to mention, both devices can be seen from back of my property.... So go figure. Buy privacy film guys

It needs to be a subscription service where only paying customers get access to the channels and services. Very few young people, and some older people, watch any live TV at all these days, let alone the **** heap RTE is, so it's seriously unfair to strong arm them into paying for something they not only don't use but have no interest in using.

Thought it was needed if you had a device capable of using the service. Regardless if you use it or not. Should be done away with IMO. Broadcasting has changed a lot since it was brought in.

The lads in prison love their TV's...

I've heard TV licence dodgers get worse treatment than pedos in the slammer!

    Don't drop the soap! :pac:

And why pay Motor Tax on a car I have already paid for?

How did you get caught? When an inspector calls to the door, a simple "no, I don't have a television" usually suffices. Followed by "no, you can't enter my home, goodbye" if necessary.

If you dont use the car on the roads, you dont need to pay it.

Buy a licence and appear in court to answer the summons.
Consult a solicitor if you like but you can just go on your own and apologise for not having the licence and say you now have one.

If you have a TV you need a licence.

I agree, once you notify them, but the OP did not say they never watch anything on TV or the Laptop just questioned the charging when you have already paid for the appliance.

New broadcasting laws not in yet so for now you only need a license if you have a tv or other device capable of receiving a signal via ariel, satellite or cable. Does not matter if its broken or not used. So computers, phones, tablets are generally exempt. If you refuse to pay you are fined. If you continue to refuse, not pay the fine etc.. you get locked up.

This will change in 5 years to a device independent broadcasting fee though. So if you have broadband or mobile data you will have to pay.

Well it doesnt matter if you never watch anything.

People get too hung up on the tv, having a tuner, "doesnt matter if tuner is not usable in ireland" etc etc.

The fact is, they want all to pay this charge. In recent times this has been achieved by ensuring the definition of a tv set would include devices which on their own can not tune our broadcasts.

It will basically be another property charge.

I suggested this years ago, eventually they would change the tv licence name to have all properties in the net.

How many warnings etc did you get?
You should just buy one...who needs the stress

Just to answer few questions and few points on here.

I Baught licence today, but I wouldn't have if I wouldn't have a child. I'd rather go for free B&B. And then paid return trip home.

I questioned why is there such charge and why can't that be subscribtion service - RTE. I don't watch it and don't have reason to.

I just came on here to tell - who ever needs to hear it that they are clamping down big time. And maybe keep blinds down or get privacy film.

Also I was not home when inspector had called. However in some magical way - fairy taht he was he was able to tell that there was one in my kitchen. Witch could have been seen only from rear...

Look, I'm not arguing with you. Nor did I say I was in favour of the licence. I simply pointed out the absurdity of the OP saying they had paid for the TV, so why pay a licence as well and gave the comparison of Motor Tax. So, direct your debate elsewhere because I didn't say anything pro or con to your angle on it.

I was posting an opinion about the course of the licencing setup. Nothing to do with any debate.

Your more likely to go to prision in Ireland for not having a TV licence than you are for selling drugs.

You may go to prison for not paying a fine.

As a matter of interest has anyone raised the issue at the doorstep with canvassers?

First they came for the socialists...

When I was i college living in a block of flats that was all students, someone let the bloody TV license inspector in the main door and he started going round to every flat, but he was preceded by a student from the first floor who went around knocking on doors warning everyone.

My flatmate and 3 of his friends were playing playstation on the telly in the sitting room when we got word. They quickly unhooked the playstation unplugged the telly and put it into a bedroom closet.

The inspector knocked and was told we had no telly. He asked could he have a look. Grand. He came in and saw in the corner a TV stand, with a big TV shaped dustprint on the top of it where the telly had just been, a playstation on the floor, which was still powered on, with 2 controllers trailing out towards the couch.

He looked at my flatmate, nodded and said, 'Right, lads.' And headed off.
