I think the answer is neither of them personally. But I don't remember anything as bad as that first half on Saturday from a kickouts point of view under Rochford

League game vs Dublin in 2017 was as bad if not worse.

Am I looking back with rose tinted glasses or did Rochford always seem to have a plan/ strategy that worked with Clarke's kickout abilities. Especially in the three finals?
I get the feeling Clarke is kicking into a strategy that doesn't compensate for his kicking styles?

I certainly think Rochford had more ideas and had them working on set plays for kick-outs more. I seem to recall one semi vs Kerry were Clarke had 21/21 successful kick-outs. But plenty of bad days as well.

I would agree with you last post. We need a new keeper soon.

That was the day when all our outfield players bunched into the centre and then broke to the wings to win the kickout. You're not going to roll out a tactic like that in a January league game.

A serious question needs to asked in terms of coaching the kick outs.

It's 3 and a half years since Clarke was dropped in the replay owing to issues around his restarts.

Has he improved anything since then in terms of his technique or adopted a more varying kicking style ?

Look, it's where things are at atm. It's a pointless debate now. Had Hennelly performed as Clarke did we all know the vitriol he would have faced. I have not heard one word about his performance. Clarke appears to be the only option between the sticks so we are going to have to live with it. 8/15 in the first half turned over and not forgetting the short one which should have resulted in a goal. Compare this to Patton, every time the camera came form the replay Donegal were half way up the pitch. To answer your question he has improved so they are obviously working on it but this is as good as it gets.

In defence of Clarke there was very little movement ahead of him. Murphy was bulling Parsons in the middle in the 1st half.

Dublin have players running all over the place in defined plans I'd say. Mayo dont seem to have that.

His kick outs just hang in the air. It gives the opposition plenty of time to contest them. We seem to have more success with players in position for the break down but that would be quickly sussed out.

I imagine it would be quite hard to change his kick out style at this stage. Is it Clarke's 18th season with Mayo now.

Does anybody know why Mattie Ruane wasnt playing or on the bench the last night?
Is it anything to do with Aussie rules interest?

We were properly cleaned at mf til Aido came on and turned the game.

Apparently he's had shoulder surgery and is out for a while.

The hanging is the problem. Parsons struggled but he was looking for the ball the last night. However, more than once the ball hung too long in the air and allowed the Donegal midfield time to contest it with him. The hanging nature turns these balls into 50/50 situations far too often. If Donegal had been shooting right, they could have been out the gap by half time and we could have been looking at a similar situation to what happened down in Killarney last summer. Everyone and their mother is wise to his shortcomings at this stage. It's a disaster waiting to happen tbh.

the last 2 pages here, the blog and the podcast all talked about it/are talking about it?
Patton also conceded 2 goals. One you could question him on?
And he is from Donegal not Mayo so what is the point.
We seem to only have 2 options as Horan refuses to look outside that
    1. Clarke - does not concede many goals(seem to be ignoring that he again was damn near faultless in his primary job of keeping the ball out of the net), the defence have absolute trust in him under a high ball which in turn gives the defence/team confidence, has a real presence in general and when facing penalties. Kickouts are a real weakness no doubt BUT I do think we lack a coherent kickout strategy. Interesting that when we put in a new midfield second half our kick out stats went up and Donegal's went down.

    2. Lets in some soft goals compared to Clarke who just saves them but it is taking for granted. He had no right to stop one in particular on Saturday night but he did cos thats what he does.
Absolutely terrifies me under a high ball. And it is clearly not just me as you can see, hear and feel it in the stadium whenever one goes in. Don't think his defence entirely trust him either..........
Whenever he is in the temptation is also to stick him on 45s. He is not good at them. It seeps his confidence. And the teams. This is not his fault. He shouldn't be taking them. But the temptations always seems to be there for management.
Finally.....and this is the ones that grates with me. He is perceived to have a vastly superior kickout to Clarke. He may have in some games but as has been shown time and time again when the pressure is on it goes into meltdown. and so does his whole game. Have we really forgotten about the Dublin semi final already.

Overall I think and I have said repeatedly a new keeper should have been blooded as back up to Clarke. It would avoid these debates for rest of year. Clarke knows the debates are ongoing and that can not help his confidence either.
Can we really trust Hennelly to come in on the big day and perform if required? Evidence points to no

I know people will not agree and that is fine. It is just an opinion. So in my opinion leave Clarke in and have a BACKUP there in case something happens to one of the best keepers in the country at keeping the ball out of his net and commanding his whole area. I would rather the backup was someone we could have blooded with a view to replacing Clarke next year when he retires (he will imo) but Robbie is an adequate back up. But that is what he should be.

One game in . A clean sheet. An undeserved point won.
And we want him out. And Robbie back in against the DUBS AGAIN. No thanks

We reached a fair few All Irelands with him in goals..........
I would argue the alternative is a disaster waiting to happen full stop.
Exhibit A - our last Championship game

I believe his much celebrated kickouts also cost us in the FBD game as well.....

Who is saying put Robbie back in? People are commenting on the lack of strategy and the lack of a new goal keeping option, which should have been sorted over the winter.
You seem to take this whole debate very personally, but we can all see what the problems are and they are not going anywhere.
Its disappointing that seemingly very little has been done to address it.

Ah no I know it’s not personal
I just find it the single most frustrating aspect of Horans tenure
He went straight back to Hennelly as soon as he took over
Ignoring all that went on on the intervening years
Was then forced to drop him when the inevitable happened against Roscommon

So then after Dublin game I said to myself that’s it. Even if Clarke stays on Horan HAS to at least try another keeper in FBD and maybe league
    But no
    Here we are again
A year further on and not a sign of anyone else gaining any bit of experience at all
He is a stubborn stubborn man

He also has defo taken a bizarre set on Eoin O D
    But that’s a seperate rant :D

    On a different note

Aidan o Shea was at our clubs Juvenile function yesterday evening (an absolute gentleman as always who went above and beyond with the kids and some of their parents :D )
The kids were allowed ask him questions
One kid asked what his worst injury was
He said he had been lucky so the shoulder operation he had over winter that kept him out for 3 months was the worst
That confirms that he played all those big games toward end of last season with that injury sadly

I was trying to buy ticket there for match on Saturday, but saw that they don't have the option to print off the tickets. This is unusual? Right? Usually have the easier option to print off a pdf document.

Not usually an option to print tickets outside of Croker.

Was meant to be the new vote for the Connaught Council delegates but think that had been binned anyway due to an objection.

At least he sent that young Westport lad out on loan to Roscommon, hopefully he'll get some game time in the lower leagues ;)

    Oi you lot !

Get that sneachta cleared by Saturday ya hear.

Jeeves & the Bentley can't be dealing with that.

We seem to be short a few selectors judging by the programme.

You would have to ask the question why .......do they feel their voices are not being listened to........

If a monsoon and a hailstorm couldn't in previous years, I wouldn't be putting my faith in a wee bit of the white stuff.

I thought Horan's comments at the end of the game were interesting. Muttered something along the lines that Castlebar is our home ground and we are trying to make it a hard place for visiting teams to come to. Expect a complete siege mentality on Saturday evening and nothing easy for the Dubs. I can see some regulars being back and a cracker of a game in store. Will it be enough to win, maybe not but what a game in prospect

It’s a must win game imo
We just have to beat them for so many reasons
