    R Line :D

    Speaking of R-Line kitted 1.6 TDi's,

Suffered my first ever NCT fail the other day. Stupid European cars.

Headlight alignment, front brake pads and discs unacceptable and an oil leak in the engine bay.

Headlight alignment was fair IMO, I'd replaced at least 3 headlight bulbs in the last 2 years so that seems plausible. Presented the car with the brake wear warning light on the dash too so that's fine :pac:

Oil leak is proving to be tricky though. I can't really see any.
Engine looks dry from above and below, the lower end of the sump has a bit of residue on it from 11 previous oil services but an unfair fail for that IMO. How and ever going to wash it down, clean the under tray and send it back.

Genuine front pads and discs (economy line) for €90, not too bad.

Front crank oil seal leaking is common on the diesels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Hopefully not mine, all that TLC that car gets :pac: :pac:

Will have a closer look around the timing cover area, only had a quick glance on the driveway yesterday. In fairness I've put almost 40k on it without hassle so if it needs doing, it needs doing.

That oil leak fail is unfair. My car had a pretty decent oil leak since I got it and had it for two NCT tests and passed and at least one other before my ownership. I did drop the sump during the summer though and resealed it and the NCT was earlier in this month for it's third in my ownership. I'd say there was still oil residue as I never cleaned it plus it is a 22 year old car so bound to be leaks here and there.

I'v had my car just over a year and a half now, and it's fault less. It's quick, comfortable and practical (330d estate). But just in the last few weeks Iv been thinking of a change for the craic. Thinking of going old school again with rwd, manual petrol. Still need something practical though. Stuck that criteria into autotrader this evening and just seen this, and it's localish to me.

    This makes sense right?

It's got 4 doors, how much more practical do you need?

Old school? Me and you have a different meaning to that word.

You'll always miss an estate if you dogs and stuff to haul on the regular. That 335 is gorgeous though.

Yeah I suppose I mean old school BM qualities, not the age of the car. Been there and done that with a previous car that I ran for 2 years and don't have the time anymore to be under it in the garage once a week.

Lovely driving these days with dry cold weather and slippy roads and the diesel soundtrack with the autobox isn't that much craic. Maybe I just need to suck it up.

Best car history check crowd is?
The old pair are very interested in a car, 6year old and only 25k miles, UK import.
Who would you recommend for a history/finance check?

Going back to the saloon is a bit of a pain in the arse sometimes for me after the F31 if I'm honest. The black one's better spec too. Do it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

Both of them are beauties, I'm nearly tempted to buy the F30 myself :pac:.

Of course as you know from owning manual BMWs the first thing you'd need to do is remove the pesky clutch delay valve and then it will be much more pleasant to use.

The engine in this is based on an engine you are already very familiar with from your ownership of an E46, the M54. Being based on the M54 it shares its excellent reliability although it also shares that engine's love of oil leaks:D and some owners report a fondness for burning oil as the miles pile on (although pretty much every petrol BMW since the M54 was introduced in 2000 does this, and unlike say a 1.2 Polo or Mk3 Mondeo, this is absolutely not an issue once you remember to top it up when the light comes on). Unlike the E46 these cars don't have kettles for cooling systems, either.

The only problem I have with the manual is that it's in a higher VRT and car tax band than the auto so it makes them that bit more expensive to import (I'm not actually sure a manual 335i appears on the revenue's website - it certainly didn't the last time I checked, only the automatic version did).

I personally use motorcheck.ie and have found it very good so far. Iv also found with two cars Iv bought that were UK imports, you can contact motorcheck and sometimes they have a bit of extra information on the car

The M54 that's based on the M54, would that be a straight six would you know? :) Smooth and whatnot?

Think i found a buyer for my avensis. If it sells for the 300 we have half agreed it would be grand.

Small automatics in general are thin on the ground here. People are only really coming around to the idea of automatics now that EVs and hybrids are becoming more popular.

Honda fit hybrids are handy-ish come by.
Apparently insurance isn't too bad on them.

    Thanks.
I used motorcheck.ie afterwards, turns out the car was a cat C up north and off the grid for two years.
The parents are gutted but are better off because of it.
It can stay under the trees for another while.

Driving from Limerick to Galway Monday evening, I'm pretty sure there was a GoSafe van on the M18.

Am I right in thinking only Gardai can do speedchecks on motorways? I'm never seen a GoSafe van doing checks on a motorway before.

I wouldn't put it past them. In my local area they only park in sections where you would be speeding as in a straight stretch while you were driving slower in all the twists and turns but decided to speed up for the straight stretch that in some places may even have a hard shoulder.

They go wherever they're told by Gardai.

Yes they've been on motorway for years.

Tend to be on bends or hiding though as that's how they really catch peeps

Balls, more chance of getting done for being a couple of kms over the limit by GoSafe than by the Guards I reckon. At least with the Guards there's often common sense and discretion used.

One good motoring policy if FF were to get in (I feel dirty for saying that because I never have and I never will vote for them, but credit where it's due):

    https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/motors/ff-will-not-progress-new-speeding-bill-if-in-government-after-election-1.4145225

Lord Ross has got to be the most useless Minister of Transport ever, and that's saying something!
