Pretty much like thick Paddy jokes and the like.

Lazy jokes made by nasty people for a thick audience, with everyone involved mistaking recognition of bigoted stereotypes for a sense of humour.

Right. Thick Paddy jokes are lazy and not particularly funny. But thats not to say there are no thick Irish people. Thick Irish people occur at about the normal rate for thick people. Likewise there will be some horrible mothers in law, but they also occur at about the normal rate for horrible people.

My MIL is a delight. She gets on my tits sometimes asking if I want a cup of tea every 5 minutes. But that's as bad as she gets. Always there to offer advice (if asked) and cares about me and my wife's health and happiness. My own mam is the same.

I've heard some stories about Interfering and horrible MILs. But MIL jokes are lazy. Sure sign of a tool if they make MIL jokes as a matter of course.

    Sweeping generalizations are rarely merited.

Also, the correct plural of mother-in-law is mothers-in-law, not mother-in-laws.

Fcukin hell it must be awful being this miserable
Jaysus I said in my (notably absent) previous post that MiL jokes make me lol. And the one you quoted from me was "People have the right to find whatever they want funny, but others have the right not to. The former sometimes don't respect the latter - yet they expect their position to be respected. However, those who find certain humour offensive can avoid it" is hardly "miserable".

i dont think that mother in laws are any worse than any other segment of society but when they go wrong, they can cause a lot of trouble

of course MIL jokes are lazy. Thats like saying knock-knock jokes are lazy - not all jokes can be ground-breaking revelations of originality. We all indulge in cliches every day, I don't see why mother in laws should be exempt.

They're not exempt from anything (exempt from what exactly?). I just said I think making MIL jokes as a matter of course is a sign of a tool. Someone who doesn't have good jokes probably makes MIL jokes because that's the best they have.

I think there is possibly a power dynamic at play, women know that other women try to control their husbands, so naturally a Mother won't be too pleased at a woman controlling her son.
