    I had a coolant leak fixed under warranty last week, also turbo had to be tightened as bolts were coming loose throwing the car into limp mode, I thought it just didn't like the cold.

    The thermostat housing is plastic and has a tendency to warp, its mated to an alloy coolant pump and the mating surface on that has a tendency to warp too. They are a balls of a job but fairly common to go.

    Dealers will never replace the two at once though so I'd nearly find out what one is leaking and pay for the other component myself or you'll be paying for the full job down the line.

    Do you have a DasWelt Auto warranty? They dont cover leaks, if the selling dealer is sound they should cover for you regardless but if getting the work done at a different dealer you might have grief.

    I'd no bother with the dealer just mentioned it was using a tiny bit of coolant getting the last service, they told me when picking it up they'd orderd a few parts and would sort it all under Warranty when they arrive. They've done every service except the first one.

    This is good advice. I’ve seen it so many times on these where the dealer sorts one leak only for another to develop soon afterwards.

    Oh yeah? They only seemed to mention the thermostat, so I should be asking them to do the "alloy coolant pump" as well?

    Oddly enough it's not the buying garage, and they had no bother doing it under warranty seemingly.

    Depends, manufacturers warranty will cover it but the DasWelt used car warranty doesn't, or at least shouldn't.

    I forget how much the pump is but I'd definitely be doing it at the same time, they are known to leak too, so you might aswell get the labour for free now. Particularly if you plan on keeping the car a few more years.

    I didn't find it anything major, light came on in the middle of nowhere, topped it up with some water and drove on. Fixed under warranty, no issue.
    Other cars have broken my heart when that light came on, BMW it's a head gasket, if it's a Subaru you cry.

    Is there a way to see this cooling issue before buying and any idea at what millage this manifests?
    I presume it effects R and Cupra too?

    I asked them about it there. He recommended I wait and don't do it until the timing belt is due (5 years is the interval right? 162 car so it'd be due at the end of next year)

    Does that make sense? Basically said there's no point in doing all of it yet.

    He obviously hasn't a notion as the MK7 GTi has a timing chain, not a belt.:eek:

    It's literally attached to the thermostat housing, it'll be removed to do this job which is a good few hours labour. Its driven off it's own drive belt, not the timing system. Might be worth asking them to reconsider unless you think you're banging your head off of a brick wall.

    Jesus I should have known that. It sounded wrong in my head as he said it but I didn't clock it. Sounds like a fob off of the highest order.

    I'll push again on it. I don't mind paying for it. He even mentioned that it'd be an extra 1.5 hours labour to do it on top of the thermostat, which if it's coming out anyway is nonsense.

    Anyone else find the headlight washers don't help at all? Headlights are filthy. Thinking about picking up OBDeleven to turn them off, feels like I'm constantly filling up the washer fluid...

    Also see you can change the colour of the digital cockpit, interesting.

    Another GTI with the mode button but no DCC here (162, model year is 16). I was quite disappointed when I realised it didn't have it because I thought all GTIs with the button had it.

    I've driven one with DCC and it's a really nice extra. Subtle, but you'd notice it. Possibly the only extra my current car doesn't have that I'd like it to.

    In the R switches driver mode between Eco/Normal/Race/Individual.

    The individual mode lets you alter the settings like throttle response, steering feel etc. Without the DCC it obviously doesn't alter the suspension.

    Race mode in the R opens the valves in the exhaust. Not much difference between Normal and Sport in the GTD anyway, improved throttle response and the soundaktor gets louder, which reminds me i think i'll get it coded out in the R.

    Agree with this hooch. Eco mode is about as useful as tits on a bull in the R.

    I will say though that in my R with no DCC, eco mode feels like the suspension is “squishy” on hard bends. On the few occasions that it was on and didn’t realise it (after going around 1 particular roundabout the car felt it like it was under steering When it shouldn’t have had and I realised it was in eco...) - this might be just bias confirmation, or else, MAYBE just going too fast :)
