Larry Gogan was the first DJ who made Pop/Rock music sound cool on the official airwaves here in Ireland from the time he began broadcasting on Radió Éireann>RTÉ Radio until he helped with the original launch in May 1979 of RTÉ Radio 2 > (later 2FM) and finally on digital station RTÉ Gold over the past 12 months. He seemed very fair and balanced to all those artists & bands looking for a step up the ladder and he also promoted Irish indigenous acts including Irish Country+Western genre, Irish Showbands, emerging up and coming Irish pop/rock across the length & breadth of this island. Larry is best remembered on radio for his "Just-A-Minute Quiz" and "The Golden Hour" and he also presented tv shows down through the years like John Player Tops of the Towns competition, Eurovision Song Contest commentary, Voiceover work on so many commercial advertisements. Larry was the DJ who used always present Ireland's Top Thirty Chart Shows on radio which was a very big deal back in the day when vinyl, cassette tapes and eventually CDs enjoyed massive sales in record shops around the country which was long before streaming downloads over the internet. If Larry turned up in a local area in the 2FM Roadcaster it was a big deal as he was such a star to his massive radio audiences. Larry was an Irish radio legend and Ireland was fortunate that he never took up offers to move abroad and work for Radio Luxembourg or at the BBC in London as he was highly regarded outside Ireland. Listening to tributes from Larry's former colleagues both young and old, you can tell he was a generous man who was willing to share his knowledge and experience with those trying to make it in the industry.

    Rest-In-Peace Larry Gogan

Over the past few months Ireland has lost Brendan Grace, Gay Byrne, Niall Tóibín, Marian Finucane and now Larry Gogan - they all made an invaluable contribution to entertainment & social discourse for such a long time. We need to develop and nurture new talent for current and future generations as the baton needs to be passed on.

Very sad to hear about Larry Gogan. He, like Marian Finucane and Gaybo, was one of those broadcasters that you knew would always be there on the airwaves. Sadly no longer. :(

I remember the 60 second quiz with real fondness. :)

It's been a year of great losses not just for RTE but Irish broadcasting in general.

A photo featuring the late Larry Gogan would seem more appropriate in an RIP thread dedicated to him on today of all days one would have thought.

A very inoffensive gentleman, seems like he was on the airwaves my whole life probably because he was.

    Rip Larry.

    Inoffensive is indeed the word.

By all accounts, nobody ever had a bad word to say about him

Never uttered a single interesting thing on air in fifty years yet was loved widely

    Can't argue with that

Larry really was a legend of the airwaves. I grew up listening to him on 2fm throughout the 80s and into the 90s. Talk about the soundtrack of your life!

Like many 80s teenagers, I tuned into Dave Fanning, Gerry Ryan and Mark Cagney - back then, they were the late night DJs who played all of the latest music, but Larry absolutely ruled daytime radio. He was one of those people who transcended the generations. Everybody seemed to love him.

As has been said, he was a big supporter of Irish bands throughout his career. He clearly had a great love for music.

He really was great DJ - what an amazing voice. I heard him interviewed a couple of years back. He was asked if he'd ever retire, but he said he wanted to keep DJing for as long as he was able to. I'm glad he was able to do that.

I don't think we'll ever see his like again.

    RIP Larry

Think Ronan Collins is doing his whole hour with stuff from Larry's shows.
Just heard the opening of Radio 2 there with Larry Gogan's intro and first disc, Clockwork by The RAts.

    Ronan getting teary again there.

He's trying his best to make it a happy memories show but you can hear it in his voice every minute or so - they were both very, very good friends with each other.

Ronan Collins was said to be a close friend of Larry Gogan and said earlier this morning that he had got to know Larry a short time before he himself started in Radio 2 back in 1979. Ronan stayed with Radio 2 for 6 years before he made the move across to Radio 1. Larry was a mentor to many of the newer voices on Radio back in the day.

You could hear how emotional Ronan was all morning and on his show at times. This morning when he phoned in to Tubridy he had to stop a few times as the news was a shock to him although; Larry was in poor health for quite a while but he was determined to battle on thru Christmas and beyond. Ronan did a nice tribute to both Larry and Marian in fairness to him.

Bob Geldof currently paying tribute to Larry Gogan's immense contribution on The News at One on RTÉ Radio 1. Broadcasters of Larry's stature are few and far between and it is only right that they are shown respect for their services and dedication to Irish public life for so many years.
