Interesting selection of Sinead O Carroll for the rugby v football debate, what was she meant to bring to the debate?

That was funny, I think Jerry Flannery made kens point for him. He doesn't have the same love for Leinster and actually hopes they lose because he has no link with the team, and he doesn't have the same love for the soccer team because there's lads with English backgrounds on the team.

Also interesting that Munster have pretty much the same amount of players in their squad from private schools as Leinster.

Thought the rugby chat was a bit of a wasted opportunity. Ken was up for it and was talking equal amounts of sense and absolute nonsense: just the right mixture of what you need to get a good debate going.

Poor oul Jerry Flannery was out of his depth. I'd say it was killing him that he couldn't launch across and eye gouge Ken in order to win the argument, he just had to rely on stupid words.

I usually think Sinéad O' Carroll is pretty good. People usually give out about here whenever she appears - but that's only honestly because she's a woman - but she was weak enough in terms of challenging Ken, it was like she pulled her punches for fear of insulting him. I concur with the majority of what he had to say about rugby, but even I could hear the flaws in some of his arguments, but she didn't really challenge him. A skilled debater could have made Ken look laughable, but she struggled to articulate basic arguments to challenge him.

And as much as I like her generally and think she gets a hard time just on account of her gender, when she said "try being a woman for a day" I groaned because that had nothing to do with what they were talking about and that was a very weak attempt to try to win a few argument points.

No football show today? they're really milking the live pods too. If I had no interest in attending event in person, I definitely have no interest in listening to a recording of same.

There was a football show today:confused:.

Nothing downloaded on my podcast app, arse, probably something to do with updating to android 10. I take back my criticism so!

I would be the exact opposite. Could never ever imagine myself going to one, but very happy to hear them all. Even though they vary greatly in quality/interest IMO.

Did Ken not feel dirty though defending the obvious trolling of McKenna and Delaney

Did they go off to their winter cabin this year?

Yeah, that was a bit lame and i also usually enjoy listening to her. She was the only one that made the point about club rugby being largely separate from the upperclass fee paying school side of things.
When I played (badly) in Cork as a teenager it was a very working class environment in the club and most of the clubs we played against. Most of the posh boys played at the some club or the schools. Not sure if it's still like that though as that was before it went professional.

    Enjoyable pod though, very amusing.

I was listening back to a pod from 2014 during the week and Ken said he didn't like rugby because the ball spends a lot of time in rucks and it can be hard to follow, but said when he went to a match and sat behind the posts he could appreciate the players movement.

I never really got people being upset about the marketing side, as they said Sky hype the bejesus out of the Premier League and also AIB hone in on the volunteer/community aspect of the GAA, so it's not unique to rugby.

Edit: here is that clip starts around the 15 minute mark

Ken won purely because he didn’t even have to go near the biggest problems with it all.

In fairness I've never seen a tweet with someone referring to the football as #nissansupersunday.

The Vodafone ad was irritating by itself. Nugent was in it for christ sake! And everytime there was a rugby discussion on certain media outlets they had to mention it about 200 times as Vodafone was sponsoring the segment.

It's even more annoying when fans buy into this corporate ****e and basically give free advertising by using the hashtag when discussing the match on social media.

Similarly annoying when sheep call football stadiums insurance companys and concert venues mobile phone networks.

The GAA ads are also generally annoying. Ok, we get it! Yer ****ing great!

Listened to the rugby "debate" today. I thought it was very poor. I'm sure Jerry Flannery is a nice guy but he doesn't seem to be the biggest of bulbs. And I don't know if Sinead O'Carroll was trying to take a different tack to Flannery or something but she wasn't great either.

Listened to the U.S. Murph and Sonia pod yesterday and today as well and thought that was much better. Always love U.S. Murph, just think he's a very talented broadcaster and he really sets a scene very well. Sonia was a bit of craic. Thought it could have been longer and they could have gotten more out of her but still enjoyed it.

In terms of the other live show content, I didn't think Jack McCaffrey was great. No huge football fan and I'm not from Dublin so maybe it's just not for me but I just thought he didn't have much to say. Really enjoyed the Stephen Kenny slot, even though he did get a bit muddled in a couple of the points he was trying to make. But it's great to hear somebody who's obviously very eager to start and is passionate about the job.

Thought the log cabin with Eoin, Richie and Murph was decent craic and found the Andy Moran Player's Chair interview interesting as I hadn't heard it before.

Probably missing a few other bits but overall I feel the standard has been decent the past few weeks with the Malkovich voiceover and Rooney advertisement my personal highlights :D

I dunno, I thought it was a throw away, jokey comment made as part of a less than serious point. Not exactly a Dave Chappele thigh-slapper, granted.

I got a few chuckles from some of Ken's contributions, but it didn't feel like any of them had their hearts in a serious discussion on the topic.

Listening to it here. It's just a bit of craic, don't think it's meant to be all that serious.

Just want to mention, thought, that while I laugh heartily at the nonsense of rugby marketing - Team of us and that shìte - GAA ads are somehow worse.

#wearehurling and so on. And the absolute production line of this-is-what-it means-to-be-Irish bòllocks.

Which, of course, is not confined to private schools.

100%. I think Bank of Ireland had ads a few years ago along the lines of how being a supporter is the really important role in the GAA, with one featuring some soft-chopped middle aged fella mewling some utterly banal criticism towards a player on the pitch. And anything involving AIB can fü¢k right off, the zombie, bailed-out mofos.

I've always been a huge fan of the pod, it does things that no other sports pod (or broadcast) comes close to. However at this stage I'd love to hear an alternative American voice to US Murph, who I feel doesn't bring much to proceedings.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to freshen things up?

Their latest campaign, the one where they pretend they're trying to fight climate change(!), is nauseating in the extreme.

US Murph is their best contributor, for my money (literally).

Meanwhile, where's Glenn Whelan's Country Pages gone? Heh.

Usually there's a review /ranking of audiobeds from the year unless I missed it? Maybe there wasn't enough new ones this year for it to make sense. I'm still not totally caught up as didn't listen as they were released over Christmas

None this year unfortunately. They would normally do it as part of the log cabin shows.

That's fine but that wasn't my question. Anything you'd change about the pod?

The last update to the 'Extras' feed was August 2018, for the Limerick hurlers audiobed.

I think he made the Succession/FAI audiobed is the only new one I can remember in 2019. To be fair that was quality
