    Evening folks,

Photos so far from this week:

    Monday 11th November 2019:
A postscript to Saturday's pictures. I called into Quakers Road while on the way back home. Earlier in the day 084 had visited the branch with the relay train and relayed the track near the level crossing with 2nd hand rail and sleepers.

    Tuesday 12th November 2019:
Pictures from Thurles and Cork while heading to Cork on the 1400 Heuston - Cork service for the IRRS show in Cork later that night.

    Wednesday 13th November 2019:
Pictures from a wet Cork on Wednesday morning as I head to Dublin on the 0925 service. Later in the day has two batches of pictures from Heuston, where in the space of a few hours the weather deteriorated significantly.

Waterford & Suir Valley Railway Sunday 27th October 2019

While on a visit to the Waterford area, I travelled on the Waterford and Suir Valley Railway at Kilmeadan.

It's been nearly 5 1/2 years since my previous visit to the railway and since then the Waterford Greenway has been build beside the railway. I'm rather split on this greenway to be honest. On one hand it has certainly increased the passing traffic at Kilmeadan with walkers and cyclists stopping off for refreshments at the station cafe, but the greenway has destroyed the tranquil scenery of the railway from Kilmeadan in towards Waterford.

On Saturday 16th November rail services were suspended between Portlaoise and Limerick Jct. for the renewal of turnout of Ground Frame 820 at Thurles. Here we see tamper 751 tamping the new turnout on the Saturday afternoon. Pictures from the day also come from outside Cashel.

Locally controlled turnout as opposed to a turnout controlled by a signalbox.

Ground Frames (GF) are used to control access to sidings and yards by means of a lever frame situated on the ground adjacent to the siding it controls. This distinguishes it from a lever frame found inside a signal box. Control of operation of a ground frame is handed by the signaller to the frame operator. Often this is done by pressing a button on the panel releasing the GF. All signals protecting the GF will be held red by the interlocking.

    From https://www.simsig.co.uk/

Off the top of my head on IE there are GF's at:

    - Portlaoise.
    - Ballybrophy.
    - Thurles.
    - Platlin Sidings x 4.
    - Killarney.

They are doing work around the 5MP this weekend relaying about 3/4 mile. Not sure what else is planned yet. I don't think there would be line speed improvements until the whole route is eventually done (when will that be is the question?) and elimination of user worked level crossings to allow a line speed increase. In a perfect world you should be able to do Limerick - Ballybrophy in about 60 - 70 minutes. We can keep dreaming....

A months closure would suggest a fair bit of work been carried out. What is the line speed, 40?? I know it's as low as 30 in some sections. Presumably they are replacing jointed track for CWR but even with crossings you'd expect to be seen a min of 50mph on CWR. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
Network Statement says 30mph from MP0 to MP35 (Silvermines Junction?) And a motorway to compete with...

And this had 70 mph running half a century ago when there was no motorway, nor even a Roscrea bypass.

I was in Glasgow for a couple of days between the 26th and 28th November for an IRO event in the City. Between these events I managed to get out and explore some of the extensive suburban railway network the city has to offer.

Hi there. I enjoyed looking at these photographs.

Can you tell me what are the other parts that are connected to a relay train apart from the flatbed wagons carrying the sleepers?

    TIA.

    Thanks for viewing.

Before a relay train does it bit, a Long Welded Rail train will visit the section to be relayed and drop rails in the "cess" i.e. outside the two existing rails. See https://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/2019-Photos/November-2019/i-fmPSZHH (not sure why there was rails in the 5ft - inside the track on this occasion).

Then the relay train will arrive which contains the Donelli gantries (see https://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/search/?q=Donelli+gantries&c=photos) and sleepers.

The Donelli's will be offloaded from the train and run along the new rails, lift the old track and place it on the flat wagon. Then lift sleepers from the flat wagon and place it on to the trackbed with the correct spacing. The rails are then slewed and fasted into place on the new sleepers. That's about it.

As you can see the line is a real feat of engineering, unfortunately on the day we visited the workers decided to call a national rail strike . This is one of many railway viaducts built over high mountains & valleys .

What's with the ghastly fence at Barnagh - completely ruins the location?

Health and Safety obviously. The station building is probably unsafe and has been fenched off. This part of the greenway is new.

    Friday 27th December 2019:
The post Christmas shuntdown startup offered little problems. One issue that did occur was 22036 failing prior to departure of the 0705 Tralee - Heuston due to a minor technical fault with 22025 being stepped up from the 0905 Tralee - Mallow to work the service to Dublin. This offered the rare sight of a 5ICR set working the Mallow - Tralee shuttles after 22036 was repaired in time for the 0905 departure.
