I didn't bother to book any time off but as there are no trains running until the 2nd, I'm working from home. I don't actually mind my normal commute but not having to drag myself into London for this lazy week has been a big bonus.

MrsTeal has a night shift tonight so for today's shift I will be doubling up as a childminder. Trying to explain what a firewall is to a 3 yr old has proven fruitless, who'd have thunk it??? Anyway, off to the playground for lunch I reckon.

    Oh I.T jokes. Haha. Not.

    I'm back today!

Just started a few weeks ago in this office and no one else is in except one of the temps...

I've literally nothing to do! I wish I could've stayed home as I've a chest infection but didn't want to call out as I'm so new and have been off the last 5 days.. Luckily I'm not back until Friday!

That’s worse than having to be in work working today. Sitting there doing nothing when you could be at home relaxing. I’d never hang around work on a normal work day during the year if I was doing nothing I’d just head away.

Or you can get paid to browse the internet whilst also getting a break from the wife and kids.

I’m getting paid to be at home and am glad to spend time with family.

I'm a contractor so get paid when I "work", and this is some of the handiest work I will do.

I could work from home but prefer to come in.

Unfortunately I have to be in otherwise I wouldn’t get paid. Handiest day ever though I’d be sitting at home otherwise not doing much. I’ve actually got a few things sorted for next week when it’s really going to pick up again. Also a bit of study.
There was about 12 people in the building this morning.
Now there’s about 6 including me and the security guy and receptionist. Joke of a day but glad I didn’t take it off. Easiest money I’ll make all year.
Also tomorrow will be the same.

    New Years Day.

We don't need any more than one or two days off at Christmas realistically. Anyone else think these holidays should be shortened and we need to do away with bank holidays to improve our competitiveness?

I can unequivocally say I do not.

Working today but sure the office is dead. Working tomorrow too but it will be more of the same.

Good to get back in and up to speed so no stress about Thursday when everyone else is in.
Won’t have the New Year’s Day dread.

Also won’t lose the annul leave days so can take a long weekend towards the end of January.

Update: I am now starting to feel really tired and want to go home. Won’t be able to clock out until 4:30....

Let me guess the civil service?
How many days at Christmas do you think most people in the civil service get off?
Most people will get Christmas day, boxing day and new year's day, majority of CS would need to take annual leave for anything else

I think that is the norm bar retail, hospitality etc.
My point was there was no need for a snide comment from that poster....off til the 28th of January...oh you must me be a civil servant.

Not back until 6th January, but am properly dreading it already. It's so lovely and luxurious being able to do as you please with your day :(

Well I think it would be fair to say the public sector get more days off than others when you take into account genourous holidays and flexi days. I know when you include all days off some of my family members get 50 days a year off (combining hols, 12 + flexidays and 9 x public hols. That is 10 weeks. This excludes the assumed sick days that seem to come as standard. Poster was being tongue in cheek I assume but there is some truth behind it.

I worked in public sector previous and now in the private sector and I’ve the exact same holiday allowance, bank holidays and flexible working working hours and working from home etc when it suits me all the same.

25 days holidays in both jobs and the days between Christmas and New Years never counted out of them in either job. Off from the 20th until the 6th and the 2nd and 3rd will probably come out of my holidays even though the company is closed for the two weeks, even if it wasn’t closed I’d still be taking these days though.

I would say a lot of private sector jobs get public hols as well? In my experience leave in public and private is pretty comparable I have worked in both.
You also only get flexi in CS at certain grades. I don't get them for example.
"Assumed sick days" are not a thing, well not where I work, you need the usual sick certs etc if over 1 days, and uncert days are limited.

Back on the 6th myself but working from home that day so will go in on the 7th.

Going to start working from home 2 days a week this year I reckon. With significant changes to my role in the last few months (that I'm considering my options about), most of my work is with people offshore or via conference calls anyway, so no real need to be in the office much of the time.

Not dreading going back, but not thrilled either.
