In what scenario would the government let RTE die?

RTE are losing viewers as quickly as people are dying. Even my nearly retired parents have stopped watching it since I spent the year showing them how to use YouTube and Netflix.

At what point will keeping RTE afloat, equate to flogging a dead horse?

    Hopefully none.

Need a public sector broadcaster in some capacity.

Hopefully never. It accounts for at least 75% of my viewing.

Rte need to be downscaled. One TV channel for news, primetime, sport, public broadcasting.
    One radio channel.
Cut the wages of all those over paid presenters.
    Simple really.

I'd consider that letting it die.

When the last of the grey vote dies out, then they wouldn't worry too much. RTE has been programming the people of Ireland since its inception. So 10 more years I'd say. Then it will be left to the digital age voters. That's when the likes of the new Leo et'al will be spending massively on google and Facebook ads instead of posters and calendars.

It won't die, it'll change just as it has changed from being 1 TV station and 1 radio channel to what it is now. Over-reaching itself.

They would let it die tomorrow. The govt hates RTE.

Move it to subscription and be done with it. Its awful and nobody in our household watches a single thing on it. Is Joe Duffy still a thing?

There is little other Irish news coverage outside of RTE. The govt would LOVE to get rid of it.

Do YouTube or Netflix show Irish news or sport or Irish pop culture/entertainment shows? Not advocating for rte hate the badsterds but if someone actually LIKES the stuff that be on rte YouTube and Netflix aren't gonna replace it. My mother has Netflix etc but still wouldn't like to start her mornings withour Ireland AM (which is TV3 i know but same idea - wont get it on Netflix)

Don't assume very elderly person watches or listens to RTE. We're well able for Netflex and satellite TV is well used by us of the grey vote brigade.

I think we watched RTE news maybe twice in the past month but apart from that it's never on here. I wouldn't lament it's passing in the slightest. I do think subscription, rather than TV licence, is the way to go for them. Then we'd see if it has any value or merit.

But many people in the Irish countryside can't access video on demand services or satellite TV because, even if they could afford to have them, they don't have adequate (if any at all!) broadband and some people may be unable to have satellite dishes because they live in rented accommodation, the owner of which might not let a dish be put up, or a preservation order on nearby trees that block the dish's line-of-sight means that the trees cannot be removed or the home might be a listed building, which might also prohibit the putting-up of a dish!

Sooner the better it dies!! Nothing but sh1te and pro government propaganda, then finally we can be done with the nasty excuse of a TV licence scaremongering and extorting our middle-aged and elderly .. it should have died years ago when them scummy presenter's salaries were exposed

I often wonder do other small European countries have the same antipathy towards their national broadcasting service (Finland, Slovenia, Norway etc)?

I think a lot of RTE's problem is that we're an English language country, and they're competing for eyes and ears with two giant media markets (UK and US). It's blindingly obvious to Irish viewers what's quality content, and Irish content pales in volume and absolute quality to British and American.

Where as if you're Finnish, and despite their high levels of English, they likely still demand quality programming in their native tounge, the national broadcaster is probably the only one has the capacity to produce that in such a small media market. I'd suspect that their broadcasters have a greater sense of mission all-round and higher levels of public support.

At the moment, RTE doesn't look like it has a purpose or grander mission, just a money trough for a couple of postcodes in Dublin.

Nonsense. We're as rural as you'll get and can get all. And Freesat is cheap as chips. I don't know one retired person reliant on RTE. Even plain old Saorview gives a choice of other channels. Freeview is available without a dish for many as well.

RTE more closely reflects the attitudes of the young surely?

    Left wing
    Liberal on social issues
    Big on the green agenda
    Big government enthusiasm aplenty

Bullshi1t , we are in one of very few 'blackspots' in the country for broadband however we still use 3g router to access the web and video on demand Netflix etc. No problem not to mention Freeview which we can receive easily for less than €100 setup.

The TV license would still remain so the only impact would be less choice

    That is way more complicated.

You know newstalk banned Irish times journos until Fintan O'Toole retracted an article of his.
    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/media-and-marketing/radio-group-owned-by-denis-o-brien-bans-irish-times-journalists-1.3245906
Communicorp, the Denis O’Brien-controlled radio group which owns the country’s only two national commercial broadcasters, has instructed its staff that no Irish Times journalists should appear on its programmes.

O'Toole dared to share his opinion about George Hook. ( Whom my father has had the displeasure and misfortune to know ). O'Toole's opinion was not flattering and so Denny banned not just O'Toole but ALL Irish times journalists.

How do i put this?? Denny owns a lot of people ...but a lot of people also own denny.

Denny and the govt ..its like they own one cheek of each other's arse. But you only see this when some honest journalist pulls both of their pants down.

Its a strange relationship for the govt. 90% of the time all owned by Denny is far from a thorn in the govts side. But 10% of the time Denny has his own agenda ...which is far from being on the side of journalism.

As another member of the "grey brigade", I agree with Srameen. I honestly couldn't tell you when was the last time I watched or listened to RTE. I get my news from Newstalk on an Echo Dot and my TV from Satellite, I also have Firesticks for streaming so, although I wouldn't be up there with the geeks, I can manage to access the outside world just fine, thank you.
Also, far from believing Government hate RTE, I see them as an arm of Government with little investigative journalism or objective reporting of National issues.

    The complete opposite is true.

You are entitled to your opinion though.

I mean can you imagine RTE banning EVERY single journalist from a national news paper? It wouldn't happen.

And several times the govt and minsters have effectively banned rte journalists for a period of time for certain reasons.

Bang on, scum the lot of them.. nothing but propaganda ever shown on rte news! We wouldn't mind if they reported on actual problems & the real Ireland!

Scum is a little harsh. You realize its likely a lot of posters here either work there or have family who work there.

I wouldn't think Newstalk is objective. But i wouldn't refer to the people who work there as scum. Its likely they are just normal people trying to earn crust and get by.

.... I was speaking in broad terms because RTE is a BROADcaster. It peddled $hite and misinfo to generations. The last of the/that generation is what I meant by the grey vote and obviously not all people over the age of 65 are fooled by them..

RTE is like an a big ship that takes an age to change direction. But it's on its last legs.

You’re a raving lunatic. I imagine you, like I am, are appalled by fake news conspiracy theories in the US, but you’re just as backward as they are.
