I first tried smoking when I was about 16 and I smoked a good bit on nights out at college.
I've no idea why I did it. I don't think it was to be cool or it wasn't peer pressure.
I do think the smoking room was a good place to meet people and their was a bit of banter and it wasn't as loud as the rest of the club.
I think I gave up because I knew I was smelling of smoke, I was coughing a bit and when I smoked or was tempted to smoke the next morning, etc I knew I might have being developing an issue and I stopped.(Apart from the odd drag.)
Do you smoke or have you ever smoked?
Have you given up or do you plan on giving up?

I've tried it a couple of times. I've probably smoked one whole cigarette when all added up.

Yes and yes. Even when I’m not smoking I adore the smell when someone else is.
40 now so the damage is done. Not worth putting myself through giving up.

I tried it a few times as a young lad (14/15). Never saw the attraction of it really.

It sickens me being around someone who smokes now, even if they don't have a fag lit - I can still smell the dirty things.

I smoked from the age of 16 to the age of 40, minimum 40 a day when I gave them up. I haven't touched a cigarette in over 10 years.

Not so sure about been a lost cause giving up at 40?
I am off them 4 years after 20 years smoking and feel better but I do really miss them on nights out . Their not going to kill you immediately but could knock anything from 10 to 30 years off your life is my guess . A bit better than dying from a cocaine overdose in your 20s though .

Smoked cigars and less than legal rollies once in the blue moon. Was offered them, never bothered actually buying any. Neither do very much for me.

The awful smell of cigarette smoke, burn marks on clothes and the mess that ashes make puts me off cigarettes and that's before even considering the health aspects.

I did and tried and failed to stop loads. Then I started vaping and they got me off them completely. Weened my way off nicotine for the next year and eventually stopped vaping too and officially haven't touched a cigarette in over two years.

Don't listen to the negative press around vaping. It's an amazing way to quit the fags.

Don't smoke full time - did a bit in college - just when drinking

Personally love a smoke with a few drinks, the two just go hand in hand for me

That said I'm only out about once a month anymore!

Yup, I smoked heavily in my 20s and 30s, started rolling my own when I was 35, quit when I was 40 and took up vaping. Still vaping 6 years on...

If I started smoking again, I'd end up destitute as it's so fuggin expensive nowadays.

I ought to quit the vaping too, but I love it. It's a cheap vice compared to smoking.

The damage isn't done though, there's still plenty of damage left to inflict on yourself. Your airways will deteriorate further the longer you smoke.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Yeah, I don't think that's how it works.. Were you to give up now you might get away with it..

    I'm off them 3 years..smoked a lot..30ish a day..and a lot of weed too..

Don't miss them at all.. don't like the smell of them at all now..I try not to be one of those pontificating ex smokers though.. except on here..

Smoked on and off from 17 till 34.

Gave up for good this time last year and have managed to stay off thankfully.

The want to have one never goes away though. It's like If you love chocolate and someone told you that you had to give it up or it would kill you.

You might give it up, but you'll always remember how enjoyable it was to eat.

What the jaysus are you doing?.. did you try to give up the vape at all?.. you're not one of those fat lads that has a massive vape thing on the go at all times are you?

Yes. From about 17 to about 30 with a few breaks. And then a year or two in my 30ies. I don't have much trouble of quitting but I would start smoking again when oh smoked. I'm off them for about 8 or 9 years but I smoke the odd time when out. Only when OH is not around because he has to stay away completely. I still find smoking are the most entertaining part of wedding and would spend a lot of time there even when not smoking.

    Hello Auldloon, lol.

I don't miss them at all either, not one bit, that's the strange thing.

I did end up giving up coffee for a while when I first gave them up, because I associated having a cup of coffee with having a cigarette, but that habit is broken now too, and I can happily have my smoke-free cappuccino again.

I've seen my mother die from emphasima at a relatively young age. No child should have to witness that, but it's even tougher for the person gasping for oxygen.

I'd say I smoke between 10-20 cigarettes a year. All my friends smoke heavily, so occasionally I end up having one with them out of boredom really. While I've a very addictive personality, for some reason cigarettes just don't do anything for me, I can take them or leave them.

Both my parents smoked and my husband smoked till it - literally - killed him. I never saw the attraction, I messed around smoking an occasional cigarette, for a brief period, when I was out socially in my early 20s, I doubt I smoked much more than one packet altogether. It was very socially acceptable at that time. Then I realised it was a bit stupid, and didn't bother any more. Hate to smell cigarette smoke on a person - they seem to think if they smoke outside no-one will be any the wiser, but the smell is there and is very unappealing.

    I smoke 15 +, and I'm cutting down.
Smoked tea leaves at 13 cause it was cool.
Smoked fags at 14 because it was cool.
Now 40+ and wishing I'd never smoked

Did for a while as a teenager, then stopped, then smoked again for a while in college, then stopped and then on and off for a while again in my twenties..

Haven't smoked for a decade or so at this stage.

Even though I smoked for a few years in total, I never felt like it fit or that there was any sort of addiction there beyond an act of habit or just joining in..

    Proved to be the case.

Very sorry to hear your mum suffered, it is a dreadful way to die.

    I smoked from 11 up to 42.

I loved my very first cigarette and was smoking about 40 rollies a day by the time I quit.

I’d been off the drink a few years and then just woke up one morning knowing I was done. I never smoked again from that moment on.

I’ve given up many vices over the years and nicotine was on par with opiates for the withdrawals. 2 weeks of torture for me and my family !

I still love the smell of fresh smoke but never have the urge to have one. It’s an insane habit. At least with other substances you get a little something from it whether that be a little escape or a little energy but all you get from cigarettes is a dose of cancer.

Would have started when I was 15 or 16 as it was "cool", copying the older siblings and cousins. Got hooked and stayed at it for a good few years. I gave up around 16 years ago. Was up to about 30 - 40 a day by then.

Am the typical reformed whore at this stage. Absolutely hate them. Mrs Cushtie gave up the same time as me. She has been on and off them a few times at this stage. Currently she is smoking and there are constant arguments about it.
