I first tried smoking when I was about 16 and I smoked a good bit on nights out at college.
I've no idea why I did it. I don't think it was to be cool or it wasn't peer pressure.
I do think the smoking room was a good place to meet people and their was a bit of banter and it wasn't as loud as the rest of the club.
I think I gave up because I knew I was smelling of smoke, I was coughing a bit and when I smoked or was tempted to smoke the next morning, etc I knew I might have being developing an issue and I stopped.(Apart from the odd drag.)
Do you smoke or have you ever smoked?
Have you given up or do you plan on giving up?

I've tried it a couple of times. I've probably smoked one whole cigarette when all added up.

Yes and yes. Even when I’m not smoking I adore the smell when someone else is.
40 now so the damage is done. Not worth putting myself through giving up.

I tried it a few times as a young lad (14/15). Never saw the attraction of it really.

It sickens me being around someone who smokes now, even if they don't have a fag lit - I can still smell the dirty things.

I smoked from the age of 16 to the age of 40, minimum 40 a day when I gave them up. I haven't touched a cigarette in over 10 years.

Not so sure about been a lost cause giving up at 40?
I am off them 4 years after 20 years smoking and feel better but I do really miss them on nights out . Their not going to kill you immediately but could knock anything from 10 to 30 years off your life is my guess . A bit better than dying from a cocaine overdose in your 20s though .

Smoked cigars and less than legal rollies once in the blue moon. Was offered them, never bothered actually buying any. Neither do very much for me.

The awful smell of cigarette smoke, burn marks on clothes and the mess that ashes make puts me off cigarettes and that's before even considering the health aspects.

I did and tried and failed to stop loads. Then I started vaping and they got me off them completely. Weened my way off nicotine for the next year and eventually stopped vaping too and officially haven't touched a cigarette in over two years.

Don't listen to the negative press around vaping. It's an amazing way to quit the fags.

Don't smoke full time - did a bit in college - just when drinking

Personally love a smoke with a few drinks, the two just go hand in hand for me

That said I'm only out about once a month anymore!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭BuboBubo

Yup, I smoked heavily in my 20s and 30s, started rolling my own when I was 35, quit when I was 40 and took up vaping. Still vaping 6 years on...

If I started smoking again, I'd end up destitute as it's so fuggin expensive nowadays.

I ought to quit the vaping too, but I love it. It's a cheap vice compared to smoking.

The damage isn't done though, there's still plenty of damage left to inflict on yourself. Your airways will deteriorate further the longer you smoke.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Yeah, I don't think that's how it works.. Were you to give up now you might get away with it..

    I'm off them 3 years..smoked a lot..30ish a day..and a lot of weed too..

Don't miss them at all.. don't like the smell of them at all now..I try not to be one of those pontificating ex smokers though.. except on here..

Smoked on and off from 17 till 34.

Gave up for good this time last year and have managed to stay off thankfully.

The want to have one never goes away though. It's like If you love chocolate and someone told you that you had to give it up or it would kill you.

You might give it up, but you'll always remember how enjoyable it was to eat.

Yes. From about 17 to about 30 with a few breaks. And then a year or two in my 30ies. I don't have much trouble of quitting but I would start smoking again when oh smoked. I'm off them for about 8 or 9 years but I smoke the odd time when out. Only when OH is not around because he has to stay away completely. I still find smoking are the most entertaining part of wedding and would spend a lot of time there even when not smoking.

    Hello Auldloon, lol.

I don't miss them at all either, not one bit, that's the strange thing.

I did end up giving up coffee for a while when I first gave them up, because I associated having a cup of coffee with having a cigarette, but that habit is broken now too, and I can happily have my smoke-free cappuccino again.

I've seen my mother die from emphasima at a relatively young age. No child should have to witness that, but it's even tougher for the person gasping for oxygen.

I'd say I smoke between 10-20 cigarettes a year. All my friends smoke heavily, so occasionally I end up having one with them out of boredom really. While I've a very addictive personality, for some reason cigarettes just don't do anything for me, I can take them or leave them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,096 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Both my parents smoked and my husband smoked till it - literally - killed him. I never saw the attraction, I messed around smoking an occasional cigarette, for a brief period, when I was out socially in my early 20s, I doubt I smoked much more than one packet altogether. It was very socially acceptable at that time. Then I realised it was a bit stupid, and didn't bother any more. Hate to smell cigarette smoke on a person - they seem to think if they smoke outside no-one will be any the wiser, but the smell is there and is very unappealing.

    I smoke 15 +, and I'm cutting down.
Smoked tea leaves at 13 cause it was cool.
Smoked fags at 14 because it was cool.
Now 40+ and wishing I'd never smoked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,560 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

Did for a while as a teenager, then stopped, then smoked again for a while in college, then stopped and then on and off for a while again in my twenties..

Haven't smoked for a decade or so at this stage.

Even though I smoked for a few years in total, I never felt like it fit or that there was any sort of addiction there beyond an act of habit or just joining in..

    Proved to be the case.

    I smoked from 11 up to 42.

I loved my very first cigarette and was smoking about 40 rollies a day by the time I quit.

I’d been off the drink a few years and then just woke up one morning knowing I was done. I never smoked again from that moment on.

I’ve given up many vices over the years and nicotine was on par with opiates for the withdrawals. 2 weeks of torture for me and my family !

I still love the smell of fresh smoke but never have the urge to have one. It’s an insane habit. At least with other substances you get a little something from it whether that be a little escape or a little energy but all you get from cigarettes is a dose of cancer.

Would have started when I was 15 or 16 as it was "cool", copying the older siblings and cousins. Got hooked and stayed at it for a good few years. I gave up around 16 years ago. Was up to about 30 - 40 a day by then.

Am the typical reformed whore at this stage. Absolutely hate them. Mrs Cushtie gave up the same time as me. She has been on and off them a few times at this stage. Currently she is smoking and there are constant arguments about it.

From 18 - mid-20s I only ever tried it once in a blue moon from other people, and I was doing it wrong the whole time (didn't inhale). I inhaled for the first time at my mate's wedding, and I swear I could feel a clamp pressing in on my windpipe. Never put one single cigarette in my mouth since (except a cigar in Portugal, but that was for the sake of novelty, and I didn't have to inhale it).

I'd say I've smoked 2 fags my entire life, even if it was the wrong way. I can at least be proud of the fact I've never purchased a box

Smoked Rollies 25/30 per day for 10 years, been on the vape for the last 6 months. I had a lung function test in work whilst on the fags last year & came back 14 years older than I actually am, scared the sh1t out of me.. lung function test coming up again now in February so I'm intrigued to see what comes back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 77 ✭✭han2000

Started smoking at 14 out of boredom, gave up when I was 20.

Never actually liked smoking although I still managed to smoke 20 a day.

Been off them 9 years now and don't miss them a bit.

I think the thing that has stuck with me most after giving up is how sick I felt when I started smoking, thankfully that's what I associate with it now.

How many?! I roll 7-8 every day but they’re king size ~ getting in the habit of making them with less now as a method of cutting down, ha!

Gave up in 2000 when I was 28 years old. Was on 10-12 a day at that point. Started when I was 11 but only smoked the odd few in school. Wasn't until I went to college that I smoked regularly.

Reason I gave up - new girlfriend (now my wife) didn't like it.

Four relapses since (just one cigarette each on four separate nights out - 2003, 2006, 2007, 2010).

Always enjoyed smoking - particularly with a pint. Too expensive though and does affect your health. Although when I smoked I never had a problem with my weight.
Since I gave up, I have had constant struggles with weight gain.

Smoked since I was a 14 year old lad. Started smoking fairly heavy in college, probably would've been a chain smoker if I was allowed to smoke in lectures, more out of nervousness than anything. Gave up cold turkey after college, and was off them completely for about 3 years. They crept back in via the odd one on a night out, and was on and off them for the past year. Probably averaging 10-15 a day. Been off them since the 23rd though, so fingers crossed!

I first tried smoking when I was 12. One puff and I was stepping it out. Didn't smore then until 18, when I was going to clubs with friends.

Thought there was no point standing alone while my friends were in smoking room, and one there thought I may as well breathe in my own smoke since I was breathing others.

Gave it up for 15 years before I got into pipe smoking, but that's only 1 a month.

When I was in 6th class our school was one of a few picked to go to Dublin to see Jeffery Wigand who was giving a talk about cigarettes.
He was the guy who spoke out about the cigarette industry and they made a movie it.
I think most of classes ended up smoking at some point to be honest.

Yeah they’re toxic. Puttin out some acrid smoke which absolutely pours off them and they don’t put themselves out. I would blame cigarettes for the smoking ban.

I smoked for just over 7 years and am now off them over 10 years. I never thought i'd manage to do it. Cold turkey without nicotine supports because as long as you are receiving nicotine it's keeping you addicted. The first time i tried i got to four days and couldn't last so went back on them.

The second time i tried i got to five days and seeing as i beat my previous record i just kept on going and now here i am an ex-smoker. I did carry around a closed 20 box for around two weeks just in case.

Nothing like dying for a smoke at 2am and the shops are shut! :D I gave them to my mother still unopened shortly after.

10 Marlboro Red a day. Way more if I’m out pinting.

Smoke a few bowls of opium twice a year max.

    Fat - yes! I'm not a lad though :P

I use a mid-sized Innokin Design (ez watt) and a smaller pen type one of the same brand. There are some massive ones out there, but my hands are a bit small for those. :D

I haven't tried quitting it yet, I did move down in nicotine strength - from 18 to 6 mg. It's keeping me off the fags, that's the main thing.

Same. Nicotine replacment didn't work for me either, any time I tried to quit that way it just prolonged the agony and always ended in failure. In the end it had to be all or nothing.
