Some women love the buzz of the sales

Sales managers creaming themselves with all the tat they're getting rid of

You’re not forcing anyone to do anything. Everyone knows opening hours when taking jobs.

It’s two days for anyone else that wants it to be and doesn’t want to shop. Some people want to shop so let them do what they enjoy.

That’s business. Again, nobody forced you to buy anything before you wanted to.

That’s a perk of working towards senior management. If there’s no perks then there’s no point in people working towards anything and standards in all areas end up on the floor.

Nobody is delivering online shopping the same day, any day of the year.

People are not going to turn down a job because they have to work Stephens Day.

However, if others could just enjoy shopping on the other 363 days and give it a rest for 2 days, then nobody has to work at all.

It’s getting ridiculous. You have call centres open 24/7 over Xmas...

In order to have all of these services available, many people are forced to work.

They wouldn’t be if people could just rest for 2 days.

And whats wrong with that exactly? You think the employees will complain? Sometimes people have to be forced to do whats good for them.

So whatever people are doing it’s ok so long as it’s what you want them to be doing? Sound job adolf.

And you’ve decided what’s good for them. Forced Christmas for everyone. Doesn’t matter if they don’t care for it much and would like to earn some extra money.

At least it's only two days. Plenty of places are closed from christmas eve until the first/second.

Eh what? Thats not what I said at all.

I'd say it's a small percentage of people in any 6am Stephens Day throng who is there for an actual bargain on a specific item that they "need"

For most its just another event to go to. Just like a concert, a gig, a match, it's something to "experience", be part of the crowd, something to take selfies at and stick up on social media. Same phenomenon as the Dunkin Doughnuts Krispy Kreme fiasco a while back.

Sales in Irish retail is a nonsense. Offloading the out of date/out of fashion tat that they couldn't sell at full price, is a more accurate description.

Force people to do what I think they should do. It’s wrong to force people to do things I don’t agree with.

Krispy Kreme. That place must be like a printing press for euros.

It's almost as if there are pros and cons involved for workers. Some like the opportunity to make a few quid extra, some prefer an extra day or two off. It's like Boards never sees any grey at all.

The neighbours up and on the road at stupid o clock this morning for the sales. Off to buy sh1te that they don't really need.
A time for relaxation with family instead people are joining the crush at shops looking for 'bargains'.

Do people go to work in shops like next, unaware of their peak sales periods and the hours required to support it?

    Highly unlikely:o
Also assume the workers get a few extra quid for it so not the end of the world for them either.

Where does that argument naturally lead to? In a few years time when Ireland is even more secular than it is now are we going to have short opening hours on Xmas day for those people who just want to earn a few extra quid?

Then afew years down the road from that are we just going to have normal opening hours Xmas day?

Heres a better idea, pay people a living wage the other 363 days of the year and let us all (and the planet) have a break from mass consumption for at least 2 of them. Would it be so terrible. Surely we can all fill this 24 hour period with something other than buying more shíte on top of all the shíte we've already bought since early December?

Let people decide for themselves. So what if the shops open Christmas Day? Don’t go to them if you don’t want to. Why the obsession that everyone must want to do the same things you want to do?

First paragraph there sounds more like Christmas shopping than Christmas sales.

I find it’s the people that go OTT buying stuff for Christmas starting sometime in August are the ones who seem offended when people go to the sales after Christmas.

In a world where everything is meaningless and open to interpretation, events like Christmas get reduced to insignificance. Is better for society when we have some universal truths or norms, like having Christmas as an observed end of year holiday.

From the way you post, It can be safely assumed that you are either a shop owner or shareholder who would benefit from the extra sales (false logic*) generated.

*folse logic as all that is happening is the money is spent on 26 December instead of 27 Dec or later.

Then you’re just forcing people to rest.
Not at all, you're letting people know they don't need to work those two days, that is completely different and beneficial for their wellbeing.

Not at all. I wouldn’t even go shopping today, I like to relax. But it’s none of my business if someone else does want to go shopping as it won’t stop me relaxing at all.

I know it's each to their own but a leaving cert aged kid wanting to spend €1500 in the BT sale including for a jumper that retails at a grand just seems nuts - boom well and truly back.

Maybe it’ll give them a nudge to look for a better job or start a course or something in time for next year.

So why are you pushing the agenda for the shops to be open if you're not going to use or benefit from it?

Why are people pushing the agenda for them to be closed when it doesn’t affect them, nor is it any of their business?

Just give people their own choice.

Some lad was on the radio earlier. He was in the queue for god knows how long wanting to buy a roll neck that retails for a grand. Hoping to get it half price.

There should be a trade-off. Have your sales but staff should be allowed to be brutally rude and vent on customers on Stephen's Day.

"Face-cream? A shìtload of good that'll do you. Like putting a plaster on a bullet wound."

"Attention all customers, there is a 28 day return policy on all exercise equipment so when your new year's resolution goes up in smoke you can return that treadmill. You fat fùcks."

So you have absolutely no sympathy for all the retail workers whose employers are forcing them to come in at 6am on St. Stephens day? Do you think that's totally ok? The point I was making is that it would be much nicer for all these workers if the shops closed until the 27th or whatever like they do in Europe.

Kid said he saved for it himself. Not my thing, but his business. Hardly boom mania which denotes overuse of credit.

None. I’ve worked christmases myself, no choice in the matter. I didn’t want to do it so I got myself a better job. That’s life.
