    Hey,
    I'm looking for some rum to try. I only drink dark rum. Will not drink clear rum. Prefer not to spend more than €60 on a bottle or rum, as otherwise I'd get a bottle of Dictador 20 year old rum :D

    Also, prefer to buy it in a shop in Dublin, or nearby Dublin.

    What I've had so far, and loved;
    Black Magic Spiced Rum
    Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum
    Captain Morgan Private Stock
    Goslings Black Seal
    Angostura 7 year old
    El Dorado 5 Years Old
    Bacardi Oakheart
    Matusalem Solera 7 Year Old
    Dictador 12 year old
    Screech (Canadian rum)

    What I've had so far, and really liked;
    Mount Gay
    Mount Gay XO
    Havana Club 7
    Appleton Estate Signature Blend
    Appleton Estate Reserve Blend
    J. Wray

    What I've had, but only sort of liked;
    Kracken
    Southern Comfort
    Captain Morgans Spiced Rum

    What I've had, but didn't really like, but still drank it, as it cost money :pac:;
    El Dorado 12 Years Old

    Rums I do not like;
    Sailor Jerry

    Aye, but not a fan. Added a "do not like" section, as I don't remember the ones I don't drink off the top of my head :pac:

    Southern Comfort is a whiskey (of sorts) liqueur, not a rum!

    Life ain't always empty.

    It’s a bourbon whiskey

    Southern comfort themselves say it’s a whiskey

    Except it cannot legally use that term in Europe because its illegally weak.

    Its a whiskey flavoured liquer. It is not a whiskey.

    Pretty certain it cannot use the Bourbon term either for similar reasons.

    And its definitely not a rum, as the topic is!

    My regular rums are Dictador 20 year old and my absolute favourite Ron zacapa 23 ... at the prices they are I have to tell myself to go easy.
    The Zacapa over a ball of ice sipped is heaven.

    Diplomatico is a fine tipple. The reserva is really nice, and the mantuano is also very very easy on the tongue.

    Just curious, how are you drinking it - with water \ ice \ lime etc?
    Cheers.

    For under €60, I would recommend to try Matusalem Gran Reserva 15 and Pyrat XO.
    Angostura 1919 would also be good choice.

    With so many lovely rums available why isn’t it more popular ? I mean compared to other spirts it’s nearly impossible to get a decent rum in a pub outside of Dublin and even in the city you need to know where to go. For most people rum stops at captain Morgan’s or Bacardi ...

    I was going to recommend some of the Appleton estate ones, but you've had them already! They're very good.

    Because most people mix it all the time. Diplomatico would be my glass of choice if straight.

    Kraken is making dark and stormy.

    Havana anejo for a rum and coke.

    It's such a versatile spirit and delicious in everything, rum baba, rum and raisan ice cream haha.

    I bought a bottle of the brewdog botanical rum to try over Christmas.

    The Angustura range is very nice.

    7 year, 1919, 1824 and 1787.

    Bacardi also have some nice dark rums

    Would it not be better to clearly separate dark rum and spiced rum.

    I think spiced is cheap rum diguised with the spice.

    I have a nice bottle of havana club maestro and also a bottle kirk and sweeneys for christmas.. sipping rums

    By law, they are separated in the EU but many, many producers are flouting the labelling regulations.
    According to the EU there is no such thing as spiced rum. Once you add flavours, sugar or spices, it's no longer rum.

    "(d) Rum shall not be flavoured."

    Also, some rums have flavouring added with nothing mentioned on the bottle.
    Nothing would convince me that Pyrat XO isn't full of sugar and flavouring.

    Seems the rum world is the wild west of regulations, there is no consistancy on age claims either, some countries are strict with age on bottles, Jamaica is one.. watched a good video on this.

    Very shouty but gets the point accross

    Problem is that rum is made in so many places.
    There's even a few Irish produced rums that are blatantly in breech of the regs.

    I think best thing is keep trying them all until you find a few you like in diferent prices rages and for straight or mixed.

    Oakheart is discontinued in favour of the Bacardi Spiced. The Carta Fuego too.

    This video is very good.
    Buying rum without very good retail advice is a minefield.
