Steve Carell has been tapped as a male lead opposite Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston in Apple’s untitled morning show drama series. It makes his first TV series role since his Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning turn on NBC’s The Office.

Written by Kerry Ehrin based on an original idea by Media Res’ Michael Ellenberg and directed by Mimi Leder, the yet untitled series provides an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women (and men) who carry out this daily televised ritual.

Carell will play Mitch Kessler, a morning show anchor who is struggling to maintain relevance in a changing media landscape. This is a familiar territory for Carell who played local TV weatherman Brick Tamland in the Anchorman feature comedy franchise and news anchor Evan Baxter in Bruce Almighty.

Ehrin, who serves as showrunner, and Leder executive produce alongside Aniston and Kristin Hahn through Echo Films; Witherspoon and Lauren Levy Neustadter through Hello Sunshine; and Ellenberg through Media Res, which serves as the studio. Brian Stelter consults on the project, with his book Top of the Morning providing additional background material. Filming is slated to begin next week in Los Angeles.

Apple TV+ has released the trailer for their upcoming drama series The Morning Show, which is set to premiere later this year.

The Morning Show is described as a high stakes drama that pulls back the curtain on early morning TV. The all-star cast lined up for the series includes Reese Witherspoon (Big Little Lies), Jennifer Aniston (Friends) and Steve Carell (The Office).

Kerry Ehrin created the series, which is based on an original idea by Michael Ellenberg. CNN’s Chief Media Correspondent Brian Stelter is a consultant, with his book ‘Top Of The Morning’ providing additional background material. Media Res is producing. The executive producers are Kerry Ehrin, Michael Ellenberg, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Mimi Leder, Kristin Hahn and Lauren Levy Neustadter.

Apple still haven't named the price of their streaming platform if it's anything over $5 a month it will be a joke since they have no real content or back catalogue to price it close to Netflix, Disney, HBO Max or Amazon.

It's the era of signature "gimmick" or genre shows; that this is Apples first big trailer doesn't exactly scream of a station atuned to the market. Not that everything needs to be the next "Games or Thrones"'esque show but this felt incredibly pedestrian. Apple's pricing will want to be pretty keen...

Their saying it will be $9.99 per month.

According to the Financial Times, Apple's total budget for its programming is floating around $6 billion; specifically regarding The Morning Show, apparently its budget of $15+ million (for reference, that's more than Game of Thrones' own per-episode budget). Methinks a lot of that is being sucked up by the cast. Crazy money.

A decent opening 3 episodes to Apple’s flagship show the cast are all likeable there is a blandness to to the raw edge they are trying for.

Wasn't impressed by this I'm afraid. Given the cast I expected much better. Painfully slow moving without any great character development. I thought these three episodes could easily have been edited down to one and the pacing would have been the better for it.

I read a comment online that it was trying to be an Aaron Sorkin series without Sorkin,and that rings true. It's like they've taken all the worst aspects of Studio 60 without the redeeming parts, full of people taking their show-within-a-show way too seriously - it is the equivalent of Ireland AM after all

I think if this had been 3 unknown actors in the main roles in the exact same show it would have got much better reviews. A lot of journalists try to be too cute with these things.

I liked the first 3 episodes myself, I find it a good watch and not to slow so looking forward to fridays episode. The first two really are setting up the storyline for the series and not gonna be rocket quick.

I had read meh reviews so I was preparing to be disappointed, but I binged the first 4 episodes recently and it was much better than I thought!

Yes, some of the dialogue is off, it's not as hard-hitting as it wants to be, but I really like it. Just watching Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell in a TV show together is a big draw. I think Aniston and Witherspoon play well off each other, and I'm enjoying the complicated dynamic their characters have got going on.

How we all getting on with this show, I found last weeks (15th Nov) very slow but this weeks (22nd) was alot more fast moving and enjoyable.

I wasn't expecting much so it's mildly entertaining. I find the #metoo stuff to be quite interesting. I haven't seen any other program to try and tackle it. It feels a bit repetitive with letting the loose cannon (Witherspoon) to go on live TV just to go off script again. I find it hard to believe that morning TV is this important or holds this much power, or else I'm oblivious to it. I can't help but think of Piers Morgan and Richard and Judy.

Finally decided to take a look at the first episode.

I found it pretty good at the human level, and in the mechanics of broadcasting, though in reality the latter's fairly minimum, with next to no buttons pressed or actual dials adjusted. There is some stuff about 'this is what America wants', etc, that's part social commentary, part 'Hey, we're the news!' Didn't find it too showy or obsessively self-regarding there which was welcome. That said, with Apple still find its feet here, I doubt it'll take any big swings. It is fairly predictable, but I don't put that as a complaint and near the end we have just what Hollywood loves, a confrontation in the rain. Nor did it seem to have much pilot-itis going on and found it well paced. Anniston does most of the heavy lifting in the opener, though it's pretty clever in that when Witherspoon and her finally have an in studio tête-à-tête, it's the latter who manages to shift the microscope.

Frankly, I don't this get either. I can only assume these shows have some sort of historic watercooler effect or are in the background in the kitchen whilst half the US population are shooing their kids out the door to school.

The finale was incredible, one of the best episodes of TV I've seen this year.

Agree for the most part with the reviews that say the first few episodes are a bit cheesy and predictable, then it steps it up a notch. I did enjoy it from the beginning though!

Have to say I thought that was fantastic. Took about 4 episodes to get going but was non stop once it did.

I found it far superior to the newsroom. Thought the supporting cast were incredible, with some really interesting characters, I particularly liked Steve Carrell's arc, the scene with Martin Shortt was excellent.

It's by far the most thorough exploration of the 'metoo movement' that I've seen. That Las Vegas episode was ground breaking for me by showing how men can be totally oblivious to the impact of their actions.

That was a chilling and creepy scene.

This is up there with the west wing for me

It was brilliant. Episode 10 in Las Vegas totally shook me. Ending was incredible

I have seen the first 3 episodes....I really enjoyed it so far...not sure why reviews were a bit mixed.

I do hope it doesn't get into a pattern of the same thing every week (i.e. one character going of script)
