I picked up a 2 xl cheap a couple of weeks ago. Half thinking maybe it'll be good enough to stick with or just keep me going for awhile anyway.

Its mostly a great phone but the screen definitely does have issues. Im seeing 3 things: graininess, pretty bad black smear when the brightness is down, and weird colour temperature shifting, as in the hue of the screen will change from blueish to redish for seemingly no reason.

Just trying to figure if these are tolerable. The price of the Pixel 3 is just too much. Decisions decisions.
Does the hue change just happen at night? Sure it's not just the Night Light feature?

No definitely not. This is a very subtle colour temperature change. I think its happening with slight adaptive brightness changes.

Could someone please recommend a tripod that is good for my Pixel 2?

Most tripods I have seen advertised show an iPhone or Samsung, but the Pixel is different because it has the volume buttons on the side in the middle of the phone, where the tripod would hold it.

My Pixel 2 has started to slow down like crazy recently, I have 2 ressource hungry apps open such as Maps Navigation and Soundcloud iwth bluetooth streaming it all become choppy and usually kills whichever is running in the background. Its a lot like Pixel 3 owners are reporting.
Is anyone else having these issues?

Iv noticed the ram management certainly not the best with recent apps opening fresh regularly. Its not causing any noticeable issues though.

    Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a mid range phone and was considering a refurbished or, if budget allows, new Pixel 2 XL. Just wondering what people's thoughts on buying a pixel 2 at this stage are? Really like the look of the camera on the P2XL.

I normally only keep phones for around a year so I'm not looking for too much longevity. I see a few reports above of updates slowing down performance, have these issues been resolved since?

I've a pixel 2 XL 8 months now. It's great. Wasn't cheap then, but it is regularly updated and is a super phone. Great battery and amazing camera (unlimited photo storage incl). Dropped it once or twice, and eventually the screen cracked , which was not cheap to replace.

My battery has become abysmal the last few weeks and all of a sudden I'm only getting 13 hours from a full charge. 11% of my battery gone after little over an hour.

Does anyone know of an app that allows me to take a more in depth look at what's consuming my battery as I've found the android battery settings section provides less information than it did a few years ago.

If you go into the battery settings (long press the battery toggle button in the drop down), then press the three dots in the top right, you can select battery usage, which gives a breakdown of app usage.

This only shows data since last charge, so you should check when you're close to empty.

In the past I used Gsam battery monitor, but I don't know what it's functionality is like these days.

If bought the phone from Google, and it's still in warranty, they're generally very helpful.

It's those battery usage stats that I find rather unhelpful these days. Looking at it now it says the only app that's used any battery is my podcast app which I used for half an hour on the way to work. Not sure how that along could result in 14% of my overall battery. Will check out the other app you've recommended.

Phone is still in warranty and I have been debating getting in touch with Google recently. I've already had to return one phone since I bought the Pixel 2 and I am having issues with the charging cable constantly slipping out while plugged in as well as the battery drain issue right now.

The one thing I don't like about googles policy is having to buy a new phone when sending one back and they refund the purchase if they agree that the issue falls under the warranty.

They've replace both a Nexus 6P and my 2xl, for me. Very few questions asked, and if I'm honest I could have lived with the pretty minor problems I was experiencing. I think the procedure was that I post the phone to them, and when they receive it they posted a new one back to me. I don't recall having to buy a new one.

If you contact them, the first thing they'll ask you to do is a hard reset on the phone by holding down the power button for 12 seconds. If that doesn't work they'll ask you to operate it in safe mode for a day. If you haven't tried either of those you should give it a go.

If safe mode works they'll suggest a factory reset. I refused to do a factory reset with a minor pixel problem (because I couldn't be a**ed), and a few days later they contacted me out of the blue to say they'd give me a new phone.

I've had to return a few devices to google over the years and I've always used the option where you get a replacement device first (which they charge you for) and then you return the malfunctioning phone. If they are happy that it's a legit issue they refund you the cost of the replacement device. I'm pretty reliant on my phone these days so just having no phone for a week or ten days is not really an option any more.

Do you mean a soft reset? Is a hard reset not a factory reset? This is something that has confused me recently. It's only a few weeks ago I had the issue where my phone would not charge and I was looking into ways to resolve the problem.

Don't think I'd be willing to do a factory reset, especially given that it looks like I have a potential software problem with the batter along with a hardware problem with the USB C port. I have purchased a new cable from the google store which should arrive today to rule out the chance that the issue is with the cable and not the port.

Apologies, yeah, maybe that's called a soft reset. It might solve an app going hay wire in the background though.

If you have a software problem it's almost certainly caused by a single app. A factory reset would remove all apps, and therefore solve the problem. If it doesn't it proves you have a hardware problem.

[edit] Of course, if running in safe mode doesn't solve it, it would also suggest that you have a hardware problem.

I had that problem with the USB port. It's very common and almost certainly cause by lint packed into the port. I solved it by very carefully scraping it out using a needle. Most people would advise using a softer tool, like a small plastic tooth pick.

Yeah, I cleaned the USB C port with a tooth pick and I think that's what resolved the problem. I think that was a different issue to the 'loose port' issue which I'm experiencing now.

As much as I love Google phones and will continue to buy one, if I was to return my device it would be my 4th return I think after returning my nexus twice and my pixel 2 once before.

I thought I had cleaned mine, but it turned out there was still some rock hard stuff in there. Which I sorted (carefully) with a needle.
