I don’t think they have a 330e on press fleet yet. I’ve a 1 series coming up but that’s it for the moment.

    Hopefully m135i?

Which should now be called the M125i :pac:

Looks like someone got their hands on a M135i here already, taken from the "Here's what I saw today" thread:

    Possibly a BMW Ireland/press car?

I just got an S90 RDesign
Traded my S60 R Design, both D4 engines obviously :) the D5 is a waste of money and anything under that isnt worth talking about. The S60 I bought new off the catalogue, threw any and every extra into it and had to wait 6 months but it was worth it. Of course, as I knew would happen, when trading the dealer (and the market in general) didnt care that it had the upgraded sound system, Sensus Nav, heated everything etc. etc. Just mileage, age and general condition please sir.
Before that had 2 5 series, one M Sport kit, one M Sport. Loved them both but got tired of the cockpit, very samey. I live in a very rural area and have a cross country commute, much as the RWD experience is great. it gave me too many hairy moments on those roads over the years. Yes even with TC on
The S90 doesnt have the same driving refinement as the 5 series but its good enough for me, i also tried an E220 AMG, really nice car but felt a bit meh to me. Volvo have really got their **** together last few years, the 90 feels bigger when your in it, wheelbase isnt that much different that the E Class but it just feels bigger, almost (note i said almost) 7 series like in some aspects.
The cabin is the nicest of the three imho, and I love the Pilot Assist, especially in stop start traffic.
With a few extras I threw on the r Design kit (bigger alloys) it passes the "look back" test for me which to me is key to everything. What do you feel when your walking away from your car and look back, if I'm parting with all that cash it has to be "I f*cking love that car" for it to be worth it.

    Congratulations on the s90.
Lovely looking car especially in r design. Volvo styling has really come on.
Was the s60 too small as it’s a cracking looking car too?

Got a V90 D4 Momentum myself and am absolutely delighted with it, the cabin is v premium and the dash design is great to use. Everything just seems thought out and works perfect everytime like phone pairing, Volvo On Call etc. My first time driving an auto with stop start and it takes a bit of getting used as tends to cut in v early, might knock it off

Mine has the Polestar tuning which aside from a slight remap totally changes the speed of the gearbox changes which makes sure it’s right on the power overtaking, Id recommend it for sure as it’s the only remap that won’t void the warranty too and dealers can fit as an accessory

Tell us...what's the collision avoidance like? :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 622 ✭✭✭eastie17

Thanks Casati, I might check out the Polestar tuning after a bit more cash comes back into the bank account :)

Hope I dont have to use the Collision Avoidance, the city safety has kicked in a few times on the S60, most often at toll barriers :) Nearly get fecken whiplash

Is the s90 more comfortable than 5 series in general and how does the handling compare?

Good and all as the 5er is, Volvo have a reputation of being a more comfortable car

D5s are not worth the premium?

    Volvo seats certainly but overall?
I’d be interested to know from someone who has experience of both especially the r design on the Volvo with it’s sporty set up.
I also wonder if the touchscreen set up is too distracting.

Depends on if you need awd but in general the performance of the D4 is v similar, D5 burns a lot more fuel too

Another example of how we get screwed in this country for nice cars.
I was looking on Bimmerpost UK where they’re discussing a deal available on the new BMW X3M. £549 deposit and £549 a month on pcp for 4 years.there is a 20k deposit contribution from dealer/BMW. Hand the car back and it’s cost you less than 27k in payments for 4 years driving. Same car here is130k and the only one for sale is over 140k in Colm Quinn’s. You’d lose over 27k here driving it off the forecourt!
Five or six hundred quid on pcp here here’s you a basic x3 2.0d and that’s after a much bigger deposit.

Much we we know car ownership in Ireland is a mugs game, every time I hear stories like this its still depressing!

It's nuts here really. It's surprising they sell a single car new really - bmw especially considering pricing becomes far more in line the with UK when you try to trade the car back in so the worst of all worlds for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,571 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

Laughable prices from new over here. If you’ve that kind of money to lose on something as average as the likes of that bmw mentioned in the post above. Buy something actually worth the money and with class and heritage and not a car make that probably makes up twenty percent of cars in any given car park !!! Like a Bentley , Aston Martin etc

You could probably get a 7 series over there on a better deal than a 3 here.

I've no doubt you absolutely could, BMW have been discounting 7s for years in the UK. They let them go for not much more than a 5 series to get them out the door.

But they're also as sly when moving on second hand 7s, "Cost £72,000 new with £9,000 worth of options", when in reality the original owner paid no such figure.

Come the new year I might finally pip for a 2017ish 740Li, the 740e whilst massively attractive financially just puts me off with the meagre range and 4 cylinder. Could trade the 740Li in 2 years and get the new much more desireable 745e with the 6 pot.

Whatever happened with this? I've always thought VRT must be illegal under EU law in that it hinders the free movement of goods which is one of the main reasons the EU exists I presume

Would you be tempted with the s500? 4.7 twin turbo afaik, e1200 motor tax so a relative steal on our system with nearly 500bhp. That’s from 2012 onwards I think ..

You can buy a car in any EU member state and import it here but you have to pay a registration tax (VRT) to own it here. The registration tax (VRT) is not illegal, other EU member states have similar.

I can also see current M3/M4 values holding well due to the fact that the new models won't be sold until 2021.

I did back to back test drive deliveries over a couple of nights from the office (South Dublin) to a customer in Drogheda, just after the new 5 Series was launched.

Neither was the M-Sport / R-Design model, but both were fully kitted out Demo models on 19" wheels.

S90 went out first, and I'm a huge Volvo fan - absolutely fantastic car for that sort of journey (which was essentially my commute as the customer was 2 mins from home) with all the technology. More or less drove itself for the whole journey with minimal input (adaptive cruise on, steering assist off as I just don't like it) - upgraded sound system can be cranked up so the rear view mirror becomes useless for it's purpose, but no sound distortion at all.

520d went the following day. No real tangible improvements that you can put your finger on over the old model, but just feels so much better. Does everything you want it to do effortlessly.

Despite being a huge Volvo fan (12 years / 4 Volvo's of continuous ownership in the household), the 5 Series is the better car. Still can't figure out what it is about it that makes it better, just is.

The centre screen on the Volvo isn't distracting when you get used to it, and even when you are getting used to it in stop/start motorway traffic, you can just stick all the self driving features on then you don't have to pay attention to the cars in front or the side and can merrily flick through the various screens, squeezing the steering wheel every 15 seconds to confirm to the car that you are still alive

Well the driving experience is always going to be better in the 5 series, RWD makes a huge difference to the driving experience. However my own personal preference is the volvo because of its comfort (not that the 5 series is not comfortanle, just find the S90 more comfortable) its look and the amount of tech in it.

every time i jump into the mrs 520d i cant believe how fiddly the controls are for the fan/demister/air circulation ,its like something from the 80`s.
Also never engages R if you try to do it swiftly.
merc have the best gear selector by a country mile.

The stalk mounted one? Last Merc I drove I knocked the bloody thing in to neutral trying to turn the wipers on. Took me a few seconds to figure out why I still couldn't see out of the windscreen and the engine was just revving :pac:

That's a safety feature in case it's done by accident.
