Granahan McCourt, the Government’s preferred bidder for the €3 billion National Broadband Plan (NBP), has been confirmed as one of the lead bidders for Northern Ireland’s state-backed broadband scheme.

The US investment firm, founded by tech billionaire David McCourt, is known to have been shortlisted for Project Stratum, the North’s £165 million broadband rollout project, after the initial stage of procurement.

That is really really biased reporting regarding the NBP .......
The Government’s project, which has been beset with delays and controversies from the start, is now expected to cost close to €3 billion, six times the original estimate.

No indication that the €3 billion is for a hugely expanded roll out when compared to the original.
Eir threw a grenade into the process earlier this year by claiming it could complete the project for less than €1 billion, a fraction of the current estimate.

..... but not do it on the same terms as the contract calls for.

To me this is disgusting reporting.
If they are going to bring up the subject of the NBP they should do so with proper facts and not half truths.

Eoin Burke-Kennedy needs to get hammered for such blatent misrepresentation.

An editorial piece following on from the Red C poll, as you say not a positive one for the current process even though the poll shows there is broad public support for the signing of the contract. I'll quote the last paragraph of the editorial and will try to post a pic or scan of the whole piece tomorrow.

Finally, got a chance to upload this

Certain vested interests that want the NBP to fail must have some influence with the SBP or individuals within it based on the constant negativity they to spread about it.

If accurate, it's interesting that she is now taking personal responsibility for the decision to exit the process.
At Openeir, Lennon also led the company’s pitch for the national broadband plan (NBP), and decided on its exit from the tender, leaving the field clear to a consortium led by Granahan McCourt

Is it just me, or does she look remarkably like Matt Damon in that 2nd pic?

There is many a 'high flyer' who would appreciate such a positive piece about them.

Great promotion of both Eir and Ms Lennon. :)

And here's Eircom's chairman David Mc Redmond in a profile interview on RTE Radio One - The Business.

Micheál would want to be shutting down this type of talk when almost 70% believe the project should get signed and started now.

Sunday Times is predicting NBP contract signing for 12th November to coincide with four Dáil by-elections. (registration required)
    https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/d11be9f0-fdbd-11e9-9b76-dbaeb2096b1a
Sources say communications minister Richard Bruton intends seeking approval to sign the contract at the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, November 12. He is expected to sign the contract with National Broadband Ireland, a firm established by preferred bidder Granahan McCourt, headed by Irish-American entrepreneur David McCourt, on the same day.
Last week Bruton’s department would neither confirm nor deny it is working towards this deadline.

You would have to assume they got the go ahead from the EU. So, will Imagine step up to the plate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,125 ✭✭✭user1842

So hopefully next Tuesday the contract will be signed. Fingers and toes crossed.

Did I miss something? Is it signed already?

If its a week away, there is a lot of optimism that there wont be some plot twist before then, surely...

Until the credits roll I'm not counting chickens.

Nice to see Nova are offering Siro in selected areas now, wonder if this means they will resell nbp fibre aswell would be great not to need to worry about switching ISP

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭BArra

it was the only option for them i guess if the NBP (which hopefully will be signed next week)

i dont suppose nova could link in their masts into siro for backhaul to improve dreadful peaktime speeds on their wireless service :pac:

Even that was split and is only just under 300 posts over the 10k (for the 2nd time), so stands to be split again.

    Point is nonsense.

Ireland was taken to task in front of an audience of more than 10,000 people at Web Summit on Wednesday morning by Microsoft president Brad Smith, who criticised the lack of access to broadband in parts of the Republic.
