I present the Will Smith genie of the lamp defence

Will Smith in a live action Aladdin... he might have gotten away with such a travesty when Patch Addams and Bicentennial Man came out but nope he ain't no genie he's a has been getting by on Robin Williams songs and talent now I'm off to shout at the traffic driving by home so late at night, I've got sleeping to do.

Will Smith's genie was a joke. Alright to be fair, no one could EVER top Robin Williams, but someone could have certainly given something memorable towards it. Smith was just plain awful. Cannot get his singing voice of 'Friend Like Me' out of my head.. .. ..

This remaking malarkey is a pet peeve of mine.you get the odd remake that is better than the original but generally they're pants.I hate seeing a remake advertised and thinking some people maybe younger are gonna go see that iys gonna be sh1t and they wont no there is a superior original out there.like the rock is apparently going to be in a big trouble in little china remake.there is only one jack burton and thats kurt russell why remake a masterpiece.its the same with them not letting good movies just die with dignity terminator 11 arnie gets arthritis.watched the new predator movie the other night i nearly threw my own poo at the telly !!but i new the etiquette crowd would disapprove.

I saw today there was talk of doing a remake of the Princess Bride and inevitably a lot of people are against it..

If they do make a new Princess Bride film it wouldn't be a remake. It would be another adaptation of the 1973 novel.

My problem with film remakes is that they are squeezing out original material. Sequels and remakes make up a large part of the cinema pie chart. Television is the most inventive mainstream medium right now. That’s fine but I wish cinema was currently as ambitious. How many talented screenwriters are not getting a shot because churning out a remake or sequel is easier and less of a risk?

Yeah I suppose we don't have to watch it (found the whole "My childhood is ruined" thing regarding the female Ghostbusters remake to be absurd - as if the movie forced them to go back in time to relive their childhood with this movie instead of that with Bill Murray and co; personally I just ignored the female Ghostbusters) but it just feels disrespectful or something. A watered down version of the original that new audiences might think actually is the original.

And those remakes of '70s and '80s shows like McGyver, Magnum P.I. and Hawaii Five-O - who the hell would watch those?!

Yeah but the existence of the second won't affect them enjoying the first one
Just say you recommend a classic to a young impressionable person and they watch the inferior remake. They are left thinking "What's supposed to be so great about that? Riffmongous must be some sort of special moron if he thinks that was a all-time great film!".

Remakes are fine if there's a chance that the original will be improved upon. If a film is universally thought to be amazing, there is less room for improvement. How about just remaking bad films? Some films are bad realisations of good stories, so why not do justice to the story by remaking that film?

Well I think you'd always qualify it with the year or as the original right? Like when I'd recommend the only decent remake I know, True Grit

I saw today there was talk of a man wobbling his balls inches from my face.

And at first it seems reasonable, but when you think about it,what is the actual problem with it really? No one is forcing me to watch it, I don't have to pay attention if i don't want to, i don't have to pay a cent towards it if i disagree with the ethics of it.

    Change my mind

    Good to know

The best remakes usually differ greatly from the original be it The Fly, The Thing. They were remakes of pretty unremarkable b movies in name only. Invasion of the body snatchers (78) while not hugely different to the original is still arguably a stronger movie.

Princess Bride is a classic. It's more a cash grab than laziness I feel. Studio sees something beloved and sees more green from modern audience.

And no question Back to the Future will be remade eventually.
