Remakes

I saw today there was talk of doing a remake of the Princess Bride and inevitably a lot of people are against it.. 'its a perfect movie, it doesn't need a remake', 'its just more lazy movie executives redoing classics', etc.

And at first it seems reasonable, but when you think about it,what is the actual problem with it really, how does it damage the original or it's fans enjoyment of it? No one is forcing you to go watch it, you don't have to pay attention if you don't want to, you don't have to pay a cent towards it if you disagree with the ethics of it, the original everyone loves is still there same as ever.

    Change my mind

When your children reach princess bride age, do you want them to watch the classic film you loved or some disposable film made by marketing that they will think you are a dick for liking even though they only wanted to watch it because of advertising.

You're right, Sylvester Stallone's 'Get Carter' remake is a harmless work of art.

Yeah but the existence of the second won't affect them enjoying the first one

We should start a forum for talking about movies.

The deluge of remakes, sequels and prequels will continue as long as mainstream pirating continues.

The 2nd one could do with a remake in fairness

If someone said they were gonna remake The Beach, I'd think, yeah, go ahead, the original didn't do the book any justice.
    Or Shutter Island maybe.

    But The Princess Bride?
    The Princess Bride?
    The Princess Bride?

So disrespectful, not to mention the fact that what feckin' eegit would want to even try and play any of the characters?

Ah it's not that big a deal now, it's not like anyone would love it so much they'd get a tattoo of it or pick it as their username or something mad

    I know!
That was some find, what were the chances of needing an actor with 6 fingers, looking for one and actually finding one?
    Wow.

Oh a semi-serious answer, but why? Really? Even when it's inevitably crap, how does it harm the original or your enjoyment of it?

Those Disney remakes of the old animated classics are a disgrace. The only decent one thus far is The Jungle Book. Lady & The Tramp seems to be following that trend of poor movies. The trailer looks shockingly bad.

I present the Will Smith genie of the lamp defence

Will Smith in a live action Aladdin... he might have gotten away with such a travesty when Patch Addams and Bicentennial Man came out but nope he ain't no genie he's a has been getting by on Robin Williams songs and talent now I'm off to shout at the traffic driving by home so late at night, I've got sleeping to do.

Will Smith's genie was a joke. Alright to be fair, no one could EVER top Robin Williams, but someone could have certainly given something memorable towards it. Smith was just plain awful. Cannot get his singing voice of 'Friend Like Me' out of my head.. .. ..

If they do make a new Princess Bride film it wouldn't be a remake. It would be another adaptation of the 1973 novel.

My problem with film remakes is that they are squeezing out original material. Sequels and remakes make up a large part of the cinema pie chart. Television is the most inventive mainstream medium right now. That’s fine but I wish cinema was currently as ambitious. How many talented screenwriters are not getting a shot because churning out a remake or sequel is easier and less of a risk?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭Raconteuse

Yeah I suppose we don't have to watch it (found the whole "My childhood is ruined" thing regarding the female Ghostbusters remake to be absurd - as if the movie forced them to go back in time to relive their childhood with this movie instead of that with Bill Murray and co; personally I just ignored the female Ghostbusters) but it just feels disrespectful or something. A watered down version of the original that new audiences might think actually is the original.

And those remakes of '70s and '80s shows like McGyver, Magnum P.I. and Hawaii Five-O - who the hell would watch those?!

Just say you recommend a classic to a young impressionable person and they watch the inferior remake. They are left thinking "What's supposed to be so great about that? Riffmongous must be some sort of special moron if he thinks that was a all-time great film!".

Remakes are fine if there's a chance that the original will be improved upon. If a film is universally thought to be amazing, there is less room for improvement. How about just remaking bad films? Some films are bad realisations of good stories, so why not do justice to the story by remaking that film?

Well I think you'd always qualify it with the year or as the original right? Like when I'd recommend the only decent remake I know, True Grit

The best remakes usually differ greatly from the original be it The Fly, The Thing. They were remakes of pretty unremarkable b movies in name only. Invasion of the body snatchers (78) while not hugely different to the original is still arguably a stronger movie.

Princess Bride is a classic. It's more a cash grab than laziness I feel. Studio sees something beloved and sees more green from modern audience.

And no question Back to the Future will be remade eventually.
