tks. Looks like perception difference / expecting something fancy when you order a roast chicken.
You had a main dish, which was good. Side you didn't like, and the dessert was also good.
Sounds like the majority of your meal was good, no?

I ordered different stuff I guess... I wouldn't expect anything but a fairly boring roast chicken from ordering it tbh... but was impressed with the meat I ordered, because you can't get porchetta or that whole sirloin anywhere else (as far as I know! Happy to be corrected!). Those choices are fairly far from average.

Roast chicken I can do at home, I imagine it's only on the menu for the fussy eaters, so wouldn't ever order it out and expect much more than fairly plain food.

So, I guess I think it's a little unfair to give them a slating review based on a roast chicken being a roast chicken, especially when that's the only main you tried there ever.

You're right of course, they should be consistent. Thinking back, I didn't like the Burnt Ends or whatever they were, too greasy for me. But I hadn't had them before, so was a risk. Your gratin should have been better than dry.

You got to get the simple things right, I didn't expect anything fancy but they managed to make the whole main tasteless. That's why somewhere like market lane leaves this in the dust. A roast chicken dinner in a restaurant with the hype like spitjack should be delivered perfectly at a minimum.

talking about Ramen - have never dined in. but did get takeaway 5 times. The first time, we thought that food was good, second tome no so good, the next 3 times we got the same dish - again first time was ok, the next 2 times - despite being the same dish - it tasted different - so the same dish tasted different the 3 times that we got and didn't taste great - so we kinda stopped getting food from them. All of the above from the Dennehy's Cross outlet.

I used go a lot about 3 yrs ago until I found no matter what I ordered they all started tasting the same, bland and flavourless. Was much more of a chilli padi/sago fan

    Yes.

Is sabo in black pool a different restaurant? Why are the names so similar?

There’s loads of Asian restaurants down the lane opposite tesco on Paul’s street?

Sorry, couldn't tell ya. I'm not familiar with the place.

Golden elephant and kudos in Douglas are the best I think...I’m gone off Camille thai.

I had breakfast in Good for the Soul in Ballincollig last week and it was delicious. Got the breakfast burrito, scrambled egg, rasher, black pudding and a tomato relish and I demolished it. There were loads of other options that I’d normally go for involving poached eggs but I’m pregnant at the moment so can’t eat runny eggs.

Really nice vibe as well. Very busy even though it was early and it seemed like the same people come in every day because the owner was chatting away with them.

Banna Thai reopened in Ballincollig, now called Kanok Thai. Same restaurant as before (across from the cinema/dinos,) same menu, same food. I ate there a few times but not in about a year for some reason. It was just as good as Banna Thai used to be.

Chilli Padi reopened as Kinkao up by Super Valu(or the L&N depending on your age). This never closed, just changed name. A hell of a lot better than Ramen. The Korean wings and kids portion of chicken fried rice is a good feed for €11.

Ballincollig is a little out for a lot of people but for something like the cinema it's a good option if your getting in the car anyway.

Yes I get ya. We were in there one morning as it happens, and it was a little hit and miss alright. We had brekkie.

The Heuvos rancheros were epic, really spicy and tasty, pork belly with chilli and eggs, and avocado, with sourdough toast. properly gorgeous. Massive portion for the money, loved it.

Eggs benedict was ok... ham good, clearly homecooked. Hollandaise was underseasoned and only about a teaspoon of it, but was homemade. Asked for more sauce and it was added to the bill. And it was on sourdough rather than an english muffin. Very hard to cut through the crust of a sourdough to eat this. I'd give it a so-so. There were a few options, like a black-pudding one, or salmon etc.

Pancakes were chewy, not fluffy, the kind of thing you get from making the batter the night before on an american pancake. Kids loved them, but I would have chucked them back if they were mine.

Hard to give an overall positive or negative on that. Loved the heuvos, pancakes = flop, eggs benny medium. I wouldn't slate it, it wasn't terrible, we enjoyed it. Not the best in the universe either if I was being critical.

Spitjack is overrated alright - I’ve never been particularly wowed when I was there, been there 4 times now - one time for dinner, once for lunch, and twice for brunch. The lunch was nice but the other times there was something missing each time or it just wasn’t as nice as somewhere like Liberty Grill which, in my opinion, still does the best eggs Benedict in the city

Anyone tried Goldie yet? New seafood place from the Market Lane crowd. I can’t wait to try it. Cork needed another seafood pla(i)ce!

Not yet, but the menu does seem fairly high end, so not just another fish & chips outlet.

Went to Sultan last night. It was indeed amazing as the recommendations in here suggested. I didn't even know this place existed until about 3 weeks ago but I'll definitley be back there sooner rather than later. The starter combos in the cool-looking star-shaped plates was awesome. I wanna know where I can get one of those!

I've only been there once for brunch and to be honest, I don't recall what the food was like (presumably it was fine, if I don't remember). What I do recall, though, was the really loud contemporary, mainstream pop music blaring from the speaker above my head.
While they did, eventually, turn it down, I have zero interest in returning on the off chance that the same situation would occur.

I get that some restaurants are aimed at a very young demographic (Son of a Bun, Cock Bull, Luigi Malone's) and perhaps loud music is appreciated (I'd have hated the music choice when I was that age, anyway) but surely Spitjack isn't going for that young, inexpensive, casual, cool vibe?? I would have thought that it wanted to attract a more mature audience.

No blaring music this weekend. And yes, that does annoy me.

The music can be ridiculously loud in Coqbull, especailly if you're seated near one of the speakers, and its not like I'm old but even I can't take it :pac:

Hmmm, I used to work in one of the bigger pubs in Galway, once the place was any way busy the orders from management were to have the music deafening loud. It had to be to the point where people would struggle to hear each other.

Managements line was "If they're chatting, they're not drinking". I wonder is the same beginning to apply to restaurants.... Get them in, get their money, get them out. ASAP.

Surely it should be a case of 'if they're chatting, they're waiting for service' be it from the waiting staff or kitchen, when it comes to a restaurant though?

It's a common problem in Irish nightlife, there's very few places where there's a chillout vibe, it's deafening tracks most places.

Logic seems stupid, if anything if they are chatting they're drinking.

Probably me and my wife's favorite. They are moving soon actually, to where Warren Allen was on Maylor St. Very nice owner, they plugged away and are doing good trade now.

Not at all.... If a place is so loud that people cant talk, they end up slamming pints/drinks/shorts and the real money maker, shots. If people are having a chat over a couple of drinks the bar aint making as much money.

Went to Goldie last week and was very impressed with food and service.
I got the pan fried brill with sea vegetables and chicken butter sauce, also with a side of chips because I need some form of potato :pac: . Everything was great, especially liked the sea vegetables which were really tasty, nearly asked for extra! Also tried out each of the three deserts as I was with a group, highlight was the espresso mouse and chocolate cake (not a big dessert coffee fan myself but it was really good so definitely go for this, unless you don't like coffee at all!). If I was to critique I would say that I wasn't too mad on the other two desserts.
It is indeed high end, but I think it did offer something different from usual because of the food and service.
