Hmmm, if you are getting 37 points of 8 with 2 lost balls (2 holes) and lost shots on 6 or 7 other holes... you must have made a string of birdies elsewhere on the course. Sounds like your game is in pretty good nick tbh

My long game is in great shape at the moment plus there's five par 5's on the course so good opportunities to reach some greens in 2 hits where three putting or failure to get up and down still gets a par.

I tend to dwell on my poor shots.
Just the single birdy on the day.
11 pars
3 bogey
2 doubles
and a scratch

35(17/18) off 23 after not picking up a club since last week in July so happy enough. Driving was a bit off, was going mostly straight but high so losing a lot of distance. Not quite how I hoped season would go but hopefully a few weeks left to get handicap down

40 points off 23 on Sunday and 4th win of the year (and 4th cut - down to 21 from a high of 25) playing with awec of the rugby forum. Just one of those rounds where no major mistakes were made; didn't go through a hole without scoring at least a point.

It's starting to come together thank god! Played last weekend and finally hit the ball like I remember. I was beginning to think I was imaging my old game. And I submitted my first card for a handicap. +22 and I'm happy out with it! Contained a triple and quadruple bogey, so it'll probably be like at as +19. I was surprised that they never asked what handicap I was though. Maybe they will when I drop the three cards in.

New rules on initial handicap allotment allow double par now. So where your score on a hole would have been dropped back to double bogey, now it's a max of double par. I.e 8 on a par 4, 6 on a par 3 etc.
Most handicaps are allocated by software now, based on the rules. Obviously committees can override the software allocation and they are also obliged to take into account your previous golfing history (if any), and that can form the basis of a reduced handicap from what the software spits out.

I would certainly hope committees override where appropriate, age, previous experience etc...

Last thing you'd want is to get a handicap that's too high for you and then start winning competitions immediately. But the rules are the rules. And I'd rather not get a handicap that I can't play to in fairness, so my previous handicap would be too low.

Agreed but if you have previously played regularly and are still able bodied and young and in a position to improve I think the new system has to have the facility to override an inflated handicap.

Wasn’t targeting this specifically at you, just in general I hope there is some scope for common sense.

2 birdies
9 pars
3 bogeys
2 dbl bogeys
2 scratches.
Scratches were due to lost ball off drives. Course management should if told me to hit iron off tee instead of driver.

A too high handicap can be quickly corrected. A too low one, not so much. A lot of people seem to miss that point. In any event, it's all changing next year with the new World handicap rules.

There is definitely a balancing act to it though. In my place there have, to my mind, been a few excessive handicaps given out. We had a guy, early-mid 30s, fit & healthy, given a start handicap of 33, which means he had to break 105 strokes to beat his handicap.

I know he's relatively new to the game, would have played a little society golf, but nothing beyond that. To my mind that's too high a start point.

He'll drop quickly (down 3 strokes already) but is it fair that someone will likely win a bunch of comps on a quick drop down like that?

Lost the Match Play final tonight on the 19th

I was two down after the 15th and pulled it back, lipped the putt for the win on 18 and then lipped the putt to keep the match going on the 19th.

It was a good match, we were both two up at different times and it was pretty back and forth. I expected him to make putts from everywhere ( and he missed very few ) and he expected me to chip it close which I did with a few lip out chips and a chip in birdie.

Just needed some putts to drop but really happy with how I played over all. 4 over for the front 9. I conceded a hole on the back 9 I could have made double on ( he made an easy par) which would have me 7 over for the back 9. He made the scores when he needed to and just overall very solid.

*Forgot two shots on the back 9, still happy

Probably not fair. But it's open to the committee to give him an ESR if he's clearly playing to a lower handicap. My point is that too low can't get a similar bump until end of year review. And that has to go to GUI for approval.

I see it in my club. There is lads that have handicaps too low for their ability. Which means they don't play comps because they haven't a chance, and they wont cut anything back cause they don't enter comps.

90 gross 71 net in Sept medal this morning. I only just got cut from 20 to 19 last week so wasn't expecting much today. Fairly happy with my score but left a lot out there. Hit about 11 gir but 3 putted, a lot.

31 points today but 4 scratches and one 3putt. Got off to another great start, 1 over after 3, bad drive on next meant reload and unfortunately bogied the second ball. Was bogies and pars for the rest of the nine to turn with 21 points. Then one bad shot for nearly each hole after that meant 3 more silly silly scratches and a poor run in.

Getting closer. My last 4 or 5 rounds have been 31 plus points.

First game in almost a month, went about as expected. 31 points, a split of 18/13. Was 2 better after 6, 1 worse after 8, 1 better after 10. Two small bits of bad luck caused the slumps, and didn't capitalise on good spots elsewhere.

Tbh my driving was awful. Struggling to remember if I hit a fairway. Rest of the game was alright though. If I was to take a positive from it....the sun was shining

After finding out I went up a shot before the round it looked like I would need at least another 6 to compete. Extremely inconsistent in all aspects from tee to green.
New clubs coming Thursday sure I will be grand...... Or single.

Played a casual 13 holes with my uncles the weekend. Played good, still not fully sure where my driver is going to go off the tee but luckily it seems to end up in play most of the time.

Happy enough with how I played.

Was out in a local interclub comp then on Sunday where 3 local clubs play each other. Each club has 8 fourballs playing for them. Best 5 and average of the next 2 best cards make up total score.

Me and my partner had 42 points, 6 3 pointers and no one pointers or blobs on the card so was happy out.

On the putting - I have started this simple routine of lining up the line on the ball with the line on the putter head. Look at the hole/target, look at the ball, pull back and through. It worked really well for 9 holes until I started to think too much about it. Lost sense of pace, started to push/pull short putts. Its such a bloody mental game

77 shots? your numbers aren't adding up in my head or am I missing something? 77 shots off 14 is 63 nett, which should be 42-46 points depending on the par of the course.

Anyway if you kept up the putting for the back nine it would have been some score.
