Is the Thady Inn too far out for you? Takes bookings, very chilled, does a very nice steak and chips.

Liberty grill, The electric is good for steak too. And spit jack... but you get slices of the whole sirloin.

I agree elbow lane is the best in the city. but the bookings are a pain.

    Will try spitjack. Thanks

Went to West Cork Burger Company yesterday. Good lunch deal going on mid week - free chips with any burger.
It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. While I didn't consider the burger to be overcooked, it was pretty dry. I'd suspect that their burgers are too lean. I also thought that they were a little heavy handed with the sauces on the burger. Chips were fine.

To be honest, I don't think I'll go anywhere other than Bunsen in the future if I want a burger. To my taste, they are the perfect, classic burger. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh on WCBC but I just thought that the burger wasn't a patch on Bunsen and more expensive (outside of the lunch deal).

Ended up going to The Elm Tree Friday night and Gallo and Galletti on the Saturday night. Food very good in both places. Nice casual dining and very good value for money in my opinion.

Took the kids to Barcadia in the Mardyke last weekend, we had a Pigsback voucher (paid E28 for a E50 voucher) so it worked out at good value. Menu is very limited, but the food is really good. We had pizza, burgers and southern fried chicken and everything was gorgeous. The chicken especially was delicious, beautiful buttermilk breadcrumbs. Even the kids pizza was proper homemade pizza. We really enjoyed it. It’s a fun place, they have board games plus the usual arcade games. Nice selection of beers too. The arcade games are 50c each, but you get quite a long playtime for that. The kids loved it, but would be a great spot for an adult party too. I will definitely be back.

Is the Golden panda in Blarney supposed to be nicer?

Actually speaking of Blarney the pizzas in pizza Pizzeria are really nice.

Hot and sour soup tastes of sugar and cheap vinegar. No stars for presentation either. €6.80

It's the snotty, cornflour look of it all that I find off-putting in the "Irish" Chinese restaurants.
That looks pretty grim, to me.

Gah. That’s the horrible wholesale sauces mixed with packets of water chestnuts. Mank.

I thought his previous round ups were poorly written and misjudged but calling Jacob's and, in particular, The Strasbourg Goose "fine dining" is beyond ridiculous.

How is this person considered a food critic?

I’ve always heard people say good things about those restaurants.

That doesn't make them "fine dining".

Also why include a review for a restaurant that has closed down?

He’s a really clunky writer too. That whole bit at the start about why we eat at night is dreadful.

And all the gushing superlatives. It reads like he asked the proprietors to write their own reviews.

Agreed, Both do 3 courses for 30 quid.
Fine dining recommendations and no mention of Greene's, bizarre.

He mustn't be pals with Green's.
While I think Green's can be a bit hit and miss, it is the only restaurant in Cork city, apart from Ichigo Ichie, that could fit in the category of "fine dining".
He seems to think that if he likes the restaurant then it's "fine dining".

Not to mention the best “steakhouse” in Cork being in Limerick.

The Echo published that series last year too - same restaurants, same reviews... Nonsense. In one of his cafe pieces, he recommended a cafe in cobh that shut a year ago. I mean, there's no accounting for taste but you can't argue against the facts!!

Baffling that they can't get some food blogger to do a better job with some fancy pictures. I'd say half of them would do it for the exposure alone.

Look at Yay Cork - the clickbait is nonsense but they do a great job of presenting pieces when you do click on the articles. Good quality pictures, up to date info... The total opposite of the nonsense the Echo posted!!

Agreed, calling Gourmet Burger 'The standard bearer for burgers on Leeside' is absolute nonsense. I can think of numerous places that do better burgers, Bunsen, Son of a Bun, Cornstore, Liberty Grill to name but a few. Shoddy effort by the Echo

I went to spitjack for the first and last time a few months ago. The brunch there was mass produced muck including gone off tomatoes on my bruschetta and sub par eggs benedict. Not sure what its like for dinner but avoid brunch here.

What was sub par about the eggs benny? Spitjack was one of the few places that actually made a real hollandaise, instead of serving a weird yellow mayo on their eggs. Is that changed?
