10th: War of the Worlds, The Spirit of Man - Jeff Waynes

    Stu:
I'm not familiar with this WOTW production, and was even less familiar with the fact that Philo sang on it. With that, I really wanted to love this. It's so dramatic, epic and appropriate for a musical based on WOTW, but as something to remember Phil Lynott by, I'm nearly too distracted by all that is going on in this. Songs which would have resonated more with me for Phil who died when he was 36, would be Sarah, Roisin Dubh or The Sun Goes Down. I'm happy that I have found this tune and will look into this Jeff Waynes musical more, but unfortunately can't place it high in this round.

    Necro:
This was sooooo cool! I loved the beat behind the story, and when the song kicked in I was grooving along with it. Loved it! Definitely going to be looking up some more of this smile.png

Quite a disparity with the judges' opinions there.

No bother, just not your cup of tea. Personally I think this song is beautiful, he was a great musician and gone way too soon so that's why I picked him.

War of the Worlds is brilliant! My mother had it on record. Use to listen to it when I was a kid all the time. The music on it is amazing. I'd say most people would be more familiar with the song Forever Autumn though it's not Phil Lynott.

    9th: Dreams - The Cranberries

    Stu:
I think for me this is a Cranberries song I wasn't gone on in the first place which then got overplayed on non-radio media back in the day. It featured heavily in ads and movie montages. That said, I haven't listened to it in years and it was nice to hear it in this round. Something like 'Ode to My Family' would have hit the spot better with me in such a downer round, but no denying that Delores was a great talent who was lost way before her time was due. Dreams might be a little upbeat for my tastes in this round to place higher.

    Necro:
Another Cranberries entry, another success with Necro. Helps that it's arguably their two best hits that have been submitted. Just brilliant. I love this video too. It enhances the song, if that's possible.

Thanks Necro - War of the Worlds is an acquired taste Stu :D But I was just putting across another side of Phil Lynott, he's class here - and yes Sarah is a beautiful song, you need Wart of the Worlds album version, a quiet room and the story from the beginning to appreciate Phil's acting here.

ETA: I was going to edit my spelling mistake but I think it works

11th: Northern Sky - Nick Drake

It's putting me in mind of Van Morrison's Astral Weeks album. I tried to get into that other critically-acclaimed piece of music when I was younger, but just couldn't get it. In recent years though, I'm very much an Astral Weeks man. Could be a similar thing with Nick Drake, an acquired taste. I will certainly be listening to more of his material after this round.

    You're not alone.

    8th: Zombie - The Cranberries

Stu: I don't know what else to say about this or how to place it, it having won a previous round. Based on having heard it a ton already in this game but it not being the fault of whoever submitted it this round, I'm placing this around the middle of the rankings. What more to say? Hmm…As well as writing this song and providing that vocal, that's Delores who is playing the distinctive lead guitar parts. No, she wasn't Eddie Van Halen or Tommy Emmanuel in terms of technical chops…but to write something so simple and memorable on guitar, as well as those lyrics and melody, is not something that many can do.

    Necro:
Once more with feeling I guess. I think it suffers unfortunately because I've already listened to it a bunch for the other category, but - How to aptly describe a song revered by many? None required, I'd be doing it a disservice tbh. Love it love it love it

Both Necro and I placed this the same on our rankings in the Irish round, now it has happened here again.

I felt bad ranking Zombie lower but yeah I think I was suffering from fatigue of it as a result of it being entered in the Irish round too.

It might have made a better movie version too -

"Will they lance it? Will they freeze it? Can they be ever free...OOOh LA! Wart of the Worlds coming to a cinema near you."

7th: Tops Drop - Fat Pat

    Stu:
Never heard this before but immediately I'm in! That synth bass is just hard to resist, and then when the chorus girls start singing…I'm there at the car wash with them.

    Necro:
Never heard this one before, but this is great! I love the beat, some great rhymes being spun here too. I'm digging it! Others may not, but I love me some rap and this is good (in the hood - did I just spit some rhymes? Wiggidy wiggidy whack!).

Hated what they did with the movie! I was expecting the love story with Carrie on the boat!

11th: Northern Sky - Nick Drake

Wow! That's my first time ever listening to Nick Drake - I will definitely be listening to more. Beautiful music and an interesting (if not immediately accessible) voice. Love these discoveries. :)
10th: War of the Worlds, The Spirit of Man - Jeff Waynes

.....I have absolutely no idea what to make of this! I either love this or hate this, but can't figure out which yet! :pac:
    9th: Dreams - The Cranberries

Have to agree with Stu on this one, I do like The Cranberries but was never mad about Dreams. Again, purely personal taste.
@Necro: I'd probably have said Linger, rather than Dreams, was their second biggest hit. Though that's just based how many times I've heard it (radio play etc.) maybe Dreams sold more copies, I dunno.

"Dreams" has incredible memories for me.

One of the more random things: I was working in Spain for a summer and I was standing in the ladies toilet with a male staff member and we were filling up water balloons. We had the radio on to some mad Spanish radio station and then out of nowhere "Dreams" came on and its just one of those moments I will never forget.

I never heard that Fat Pat song either until I just googled some dead rappers for this game and came up with it! I think it's a classic track and pretty famous in Houston, where he was from. It has served me well; I'm pretty happy to get seventh.

    6th: Grace - Jeff Buckley

    Stu:
A great album from a top talent, however Grace the song was a grower for me over the years and it still hasn't reached the heights for me that it has with many others. It's undoubtedly a quality song and the songwriting and performances are top drawer. There are people who write essays about this song and study it, however I'm not one of them. 'Lover You Should've Come Over' might have brought this paragraph into TLDR fawning territory, but unfortunately and admittedly sacrilegiously, Jeff Buckley is outside my Top 10 for this round.

    Necro:
This has been a great round for belters. Grace of course is right up there with the best of them. Just an all round brilliant song. Top three the first time I listened to it and just never moved.

Nice choice Rikand, I didn't expect anyone else to be picking him.

Was a a tough choice deciding on what song to go for from him.

I love Nick Drake. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought to submit him too :)

It was my first thought to submit for him. Either that or Riverman but just to be sure, I listened to about 20 Nick Drake songs including a few instrumentals all of which I said "Yep, I'd really love to submit this" and just ended up coming back to Northern Sky anyway.

Pink Moon is probably his most famous for all the adverts it has been in for anyone else wanting to get into him. But if you really want to be dragged down Stu, then Nick Drake has got that in abundance!

Yeah, went for one of his more uplifting songs! Between Riverman for me too, and Place to be, One of these things first, From the morning etc. So many good songs but so few also given what he could have made.

Was thinking about possibly going for another artist instead who I'll post at the end
