    Isn't that the 'problem'? State policy has been more towards 'preservation' - sure you can keep a statutory need for it and require it for certain jobs etc. But when your'e at the stage of preserving something, it usually means it's on it's last legs.

    Watch TG4, listen to RnaG, talk to yourself? I suppose it depends where you live. I can't recall ever hearing any Gaeilge spoken by my neighbours, in local village or towns around where we live rural. I think you'd have to seek out people to converse with just like you'd seek out people with say an interest in pottery or beekeeping etc.

    You suggest forcing the entire 7 billion to learn English. So you’re not inconvenienced by having to hear other other languages or because you haven’t the ability to learn another language or you just don’t like that there are other cultures and nationalities with their own languages?

    I never suggested forcing anybody to do anything (more made up nonsense), I merely suggested it would be more convenient if we all spoke the same language, now less of the personal attacks please.

    Now please explain why you brought up hetrosexual white males, have you an issue with these people?

    Making Irish a non-compulsory subject in school might be one of the best things we could do for the language. Generations of Irish school kids figure Irish as a dreary thing that they didn't even really know why they had to study it. At least other compulsory subjects had practical use outside of the school (up to a point).

    If you made it non-compulsory, you'd have to seek it out a bit more. Firstly, this means that those studying it would more likely be actually interested in it. It also would mean that the societies and groups outside the formal education system would be compelled to do more of the work of actually preserving the language, and it can be they who promote it to children. And such groups would have the advantage of not being subject to a soulless state-devised curriculum. They might be able to teach it in that living, conversational way that we've always said schools should adopt, but never seem to.

    I once read that if it were mandatory or a legal requirement to copulate with the Chinese that the entire population of the planet would be Chinese within 3 generations.

    That's right, if we all just copulated with the Chinese we would all have to speak Mandarin or we wouldn't understand are grandkids' children.

    It's terrifying really.

    Trad irish music is part of our culture,so is irish,
    but,s its obvious the plain people of ireland have switched over to english ,apart from certain rural area,s .
    Irish is mainly spoken in the gaeltacht .
    We are in an open democracy , the government can provide support ,
    and make it a required subject in the leaving cert.
    As far as i can see theres very few young people playing irish folk music ,
    full time.
    There,s certain cultural process,s and movements that happen
    regardless of the policys of government committee,s and the education
    system.
    We are in the middle of a housing crisis, we also are facing the result of brexit, will there have to be border controls .
    Also we are all facing the threat of climate change .
    I think the irish government has to devote it,s attention to the most urgent problems facing it.
    Theres not much more it can do for the irish language .
    I,m a lot more interested in what people say and do ,then the language
    they happen to speak .
    The irish speak english in a certain way, its not the same as english spoken in england or scotland .
    If someone made a drama based in cork or inner city dublin
    using local slang and accents i,m not sure if a uk audience would
    understand what is going on.
    Every county and city in ireland has its own slang and local accent .

    To your point though well yeah. There’s far more of them than us so obviously.

    4/10 people alive in the planet will be from Africa by 2050. Undeniable biology.

    The west is too busy with lifestyles and accouterments to have kids.

    Simple as.

    It also ignores how language works, one world language is not possible. Language changes and develops all the time, if there was one world language it would break up into different languages in fairly short order. English is already predicted to break up into a family of languages over the next two hundred years.

    Once Mary Lou McDonalds & Michelle O'Neill get their Irish Language act through up North, then the whole island will be fluent within a few years ;)

    ....mind you, I'm not sure if either of them can speak it?

    They can't. Ever see the time the TG4 reporter asked them a question in Irish. I've never seen whiter faces. They had to call in a deputy to ask the question.

    They do the language no favours.
