Way behind in my log :( ,I have read about ten books since my last post :D

Top notch read .I hope to raed the full series if I can fined them in trade size.
Set in a brilliantly-realized world ravaged by anarchy and dark, uncontrollable magic, Deadhouse Gates is the thrilling, brutal second chapter in the Malazan Book of the Fallen. A powerful novel of war, intrigue and betrayal, it confirms Steven Erikson as a storyteller of breathtaking skill, imagination and originality - a new master of epic fantasy.

Ok read ,but not for me.I just found some of the banter and vocabulary off putting/jarring.I probably won't be finishing this series.

The city of Ro Canarn burns. The armies of the Red march upon the northern lords. And the children of a dead god are waking from their long slumber...
The Duke of Canarn is dead, executed by the King's decree. The city lies in chaos, its people starving, sickening, and tyrannized by the ongoing presence of the King's mercenary army. But still hope remains: the Duke's children, the Lord Bromvy and Lady Bronwyn, have escaped their father's fate.
Separated by enemy territory, hunted by the warrior clerics of the One God, Bromvy undertakes to win back the city with the help of the secretive outcasts of the Darkwald forest, the Dokkalfar. The Lady Bronwyn makes for the sanctuary of the Grass Sea and the warriors of Ranen with the mass of the King's forces at her heels. And in the mountainous region of Fjorlan, the High Thain Algenon Teardrop launches his Dragon Fleet against the Red Army. Brother wars against brother in this, the epic first volume of the long war.

The Tower of Babel is the greatest marvel in the world. Immense as a mountain, the ancient Tower holds unnumbered ringdoms, warring and peaceful, stacked one on the other like the layers of a cake. It is a world of geniuses and tyrants, of luxury and menace, of unusual animals and mysterious machines.

Soon after arriving for his honeymoon at the Tower, the mild-mannered headmaster of a small village school, Thomas Senlin, gets separated from his wife, Marya, in the overwhelming swarm of tourists, residents, and miscreants.

Senlin is determined to find Marya, but to do so he'll have to navigate madhouses, ballrooms, and burlesque theaters. He must survive betrayal, assassins, and the illusions of the Tower. But if he hopes to find his wife, he will have to do more than just endure.

Top notch read IMO.I really liked this one a lot and pre-ordered part two as soon as I finished it. Priest of lies ( part 2)will be my next read after my current book.
Think peaky blinders in a medieval setting with magic and you have a good idea what this is about.

    51ItM6S0zKL._SX323_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Sixty-five thousand battle-shocked, trained killers came home to no jobs, no food and the plague. What did Her Majesty think was going to happen?'Tomas Piety takes his duties seriously: as a soldier, as a priest of Our Lady of Eternal Sorrows and as a leader of men. He has come home from the war to reclaim his family business, to provide for his men and to ensure the horrors of Abingon can never happen in Ellinburg. But things have changed: his crime empire has been stolen and the people of Ellinburg - his people - have run out of food and hope and places to hide. With his best friend Bloody Anne, his war-damaged brother Jochan and his new gang, the Pious Men, Tomas sets out to reclaim what was his.
And as Tomas is dragged into a web of political intrigue by the sinister Queen's Men, forced to work against the foreign infiltrators lurking in the backstreet taverns, brothels and gambling dens of the Stink, one thing becomes clear.
    The war has just begun.

Entertaining and enjoyable read overall but found some of the stories a bit repetitive.

    51ebyz2kYQL._SX321_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg
Deadwood meets Cthulhu in this wild and profane Western romp featuring zombies, werewolves, evil spirits, and one pissed-off gun-slinging preacher.

The Wild West has never seen the likes of Reverend Jebediah Mercer, a hard man wielding a burning Bible in the battle between God and the Devil, in an endless struggle he’s not sure he cares who wins. Laced with fast-paced action, nonstop humor, and spine-tingling horror, Deadman’s Road is your ride to hell, in which a vengeful shaman curses the town by conjuring a seemingly unstoppable army of the undead; an ill-advised shortcut leads to a bees’ nest of terror; a man stands condemned, not for murdering his wife but for raising the Lovecraftian horror that killed her; a woman is attacked by werewolves and left for dead in a ghost town; and a mining camp faces off with a horde of cannibalistic fiends.

I am loving this series.IMO Cameron's fantasy books/series are getting better with each book.
Reminds me a bit of the early Raymond E Feist stuff which I loved at the time ,but certainly stands out on its own two feet .Great characters, world building and superb story.

Part 3 is out next month. :)

'A masterclass in how to write modern fantasy - world building, characters, plot and pacing, all perfectly blended. Miles Cameron is at the top of his game. To say I loved it is an understatement' John Gwynne
'Miles Cameron is back with a brand new series and you're going to be hooked from the very beginning. A fresh take on the typical farm boy turned hero fantasy, this is everything you could possibly want in a fantasy series' The Bibliophile Chronicles
'A stirring, gritty and at times quite brutal epic fantasy' Tor.com
'This series promises to be the standout epic fantasy for the ages' Fantasy Book Critic

A enjoyable read but nothing special IMO.

A desperate rescue attempt deep behind enemy lines . . . a nail-biting adventure with all the hard-edged appeal of Bravo Two Zero

When Valens, a junior officer in the Roman Army, joins a crack squad of soldiers on a dangerous mission, little does he know what's in store for him. Tasked with rescuing the young Prince Sasan, who has been imprisoned in the impenetrable Castle of Silence, the troops set out across Mesopotamia and into the mountains south of the Caspian Sea.

Deep in hostile territory, inexperienced Valens finds himself in charge. And as one by one his soldiers die or disappear, he begins to suspect that there is a traitor in their midst, and that the rescue is fast becoming a suicide mission.

Valens must marshal this disparate group of men and earn their respect, before it's too late . . .

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would as I am not usually a fan of books set during/around american depression period. It was probably been a fan of McCammon that encouraged me to try it at all.
The opening scenes reminded me a lot of the film Paper Moon and while the period setting was not to my liking , the characters and overall story made it a very enjoyable read.
    51lqnwKKzAL._SX330_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

1934. Businesses went under by the hundreds, debt and foreclosures boomed, and breadlines grew in many American cities. In the midst of this misery, some folks explored unscrupulous ways to make money. Angel-faced John Partlow and carnival huckster Ginger LaFrance are among the worst of this lot. Joining together they leave their small time confidence scams behind to attempt an elaborate kidnapping-for-ransom scheme in New Orleans. In a different part of town, Curtis Mayhew, a young black man who works as a redcap for the Union Railroad Station, has a reputation for mending quarrels and misunderstandings among his friends. What those friends don't know is that Curtis has a special talent for listening... and he can sometimes hear things that aren't spoken aloud. One day, Curtis Mayhew's special talent allows him to overhear a child's cry for help (THIS MAN IN THE CAR HE'S GOT A GUN), which draws him into the dangerous world of Partlow and LaFrance. This gritty depression-era crime

'Peaky Blinders with swords' (Barnes & Noble), perfect for fans of Mark Lawrence and Joe Abercrombie.
'The poorer and more oppressed people are, the weaker they become - until they just refuse to take it any more. Then they will rise up, and the gods help their oppressors.'

When Tomas Piety and his Pious Men returned from the war, he just wanted to rebuild his crime empire and look after his people. But the sinister Queen's Men had different ideas and whether he likes it or not, he's now a spy as well.
Now, half the city of Ellinburg lies in ashes and the webs of political intrigue are stretching out from the Queen's capital to pull Tomas in. Dannsburg is calling.
In Dannsburg the nobility fight with words, not blades, but the results are every bit as bloody. In this pit of beasts, Tomas must decide once and for all whether he is truly the people's champion . . . or just a priest of lies.
As said previously although I was enjoying the first third of the book I kinda felt in the back of my mind that this was just more of the same and nothing new.But then it was BOOM! and off to Dannisburg for a change of senery and a injection of new characters that IMO really kickstarter the whole thing again.
Love the way it ended and will be counting the days till part three

I am enjoying this series so I will probably get part 3.
    51prdP9GHZL.jpg
Forced by necessity into a life of piracy, Senlin and his eclectic crew struggle to survive aboard their stolen airship as the hunt for his lost wife continues. But the Tower of Babel is proving to be as difficult to re-enter as it was to escape.
Hopeless and desolate, they turn to a legend of the tower, the mysterious Sphinx. But help from the sphinx doesn't come cheaply and, as Senlin knows, debts aren't always what they seem in the Tower of Babel.

Top notch read with lots of LOL moments for me.A selection of short stories set in the World of the first law.
A nice warmup for Abercrombies newest book "A little Hatred"

    61YRjCK1wYL._SX323_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Sharp Ends combines previously published, award-winning tales with exclusive new short stories. Violence explodes, treachery abounds, and the words are as deadly as the weapons in this rogue's gallery of side-shows, back-stories, and sharp endings from the world of the First Law.

    Very enjoyable series overall.

Every war come down to the flash of bright steel.
Even when the air is full of magic . . .
Aranthur and his friends have come together across different continents and realms with one purpose: to strike back against the forces which have torn a hole in the heavens and threaten to tear the world beneath them apart as well.
With time running short, and treason at home, there are battles to be fought on the field, in the magical arena, and in the ever-deadly realm of politics, and they cannot fail anywhere or everything will fall. Victory will require enemies to trust one another, old foes to fight together, spies to reveal the truth and steadfast allies to betray long-corrupt rulers.

(Part 3 in the Voices series)
This series for me has sprinkling of ingredients that I love already...... Kings "The Stand" ,The Last of us video game ,and it also reminds a bit me of Kirkmans The Walking Dead .Not just because of the settings but mainly because of the great characters.
Todd still walks her own path in the post apocalypical world and IMO has done a great job with one of my favourite genres.

Looking forward to the final instalment.

    51Zqyh1vZYL._SX323_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

I will definitely be keeping a eye on all her future books after this series.:D

There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who hear voices, and those who want to silence them.

Survivors is the highly anticipated third instalment in the acclaimed Voices series, following the spectacular novels Defender and Hunted. Good and Evil are closer than ever before in a world where the voices in your head can save or slaughter you.
Pilgrim is a man with a past he can't remember. When he wakes alone in a shallow grave, there is a voice in his head that doesn't belong to him. It explains who he is and what he's done. It tells him he has one purpose: to find a girl named Lacey.
As Pilgrim is drawn north to Missouri in search of Lacey, he must also travel back to where it all began - to those he left behind. War is coming, and Pilgrim is going to need all the allies he can get.

Top notch Urban Fantasy and a easy read for me over christmas. :D .
Just a heads up this is adult themed , Laytham is a badass ,defo not Harry Potter.
    51flfzXCy2L._SX327_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Laytham Ballard once protected humanity as part of the Nightwise, a secret order of modern-day mages dedicating to holding hellish supernatural forces at bay. That was before a string of sadistic ritual murders shook everything he believed in - and sent him down a much darker path. One that has already cost him most of his soul, as well as everything he once held dear. Now a powerful faerie mob boss has hired Ballard to find his lost-lost daughter, who went missing several years ago. The long-cold trail leads him across the globe, from the luxurious playgrounds of the rich and famous to the seedy occult underbelly of Los Angeles, where creatures of myth and legend mingle with street gangs and sex clubs, and where Ballard finds his own guilty past waiting for him around every shadowy corner. To find Caern Ankou, he will have to confront old enemies, former friends and allies, and a grisly cold case that has haunted him for years. Is Caern still alive? And, perhaps more importantly, does she want to be found?

Liked this a lot and it got better towards the end.
With the possibility of numerous ringdoms still unexplored within the the Tower this series could go on and on ,but I myself hope that book 4 concludes this particular adventure.

    51tBH9Qip2L.jpg
Fearing an uprising, the Sphinx sends Senlin to investigate a plot that has taken hold in the ringdom of Pelphia. Alone in the city, Senlin infiltrates a bloody arena where hods battle for the public's entertainment. But his investigation is quickly derailed by a gruesome crime and an unexpected reunion.
Posing as a noble lady and her handmaid, Voleta and Iren attempt to reach Marya, who is isolated by her fame. While navigating the court, Voleta attracts the unwanted attention of a powerful prince whose pursuit of her threatens their plan.
Edith, now captain of the Sphinx's fierce flagship, joins forces with a fellow wakeman to investigate the disappearance of a beloved friend. She must decide who to trust as her desperate search brings her nearer to the Black Trail where the hods climb in darkness and whisper of the Hod King.
As Senlin and his crew become further dragged in to the conspiracies of the Tower, everything falls to one question: Who is The Hod King?

I'm late to the party with this one .From 2015 this is a dark, gritty and fun read. The upside is as its all finished ,part two and three are in the post.:D

Hope they are as good as this one.

    51zYo4D4yJL._SX326_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

A darkly imaginative writer in the tradition of Joe Abercrombie, Peter V. Brett, and Neil Gaiman conjures a gritty mind-bending fantasy, set in a world where delusion becomes reality . . . and the fulfillment of humanity’s desires may well prove to be its undoing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,014 ✭✭✭Paddy Samurai

Might not be for everyone ,but its 10/10 for me.Love this series and the 3 main characters are top notch. Stehlen kicks ass!. :D
Part 3 is on my shelf and ready to go.:D

    51y8-hyR0EL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg
Where belief defines reality, delusions are both strength and curse: The deeper you sink into madness the more powerful you become. But that power comes with a price. Your darkest nightmares hunt you at night. The face in the mirror hates you and wants to be free. Your fears manifest and plot your destruction. ******Bedeckt defined himself by the list of crimes he was unwilling to commit. It was such a short list. The Geborene god seeks to remake the world with his obsessive need for cleanliness and perfection, but Bedeckt is going to bring him down. Nothing can stop him. Not even death. The two friends he abandoned in the Afterdeath chase after Bedeckt, bent on revenge. Psychotic assassins hunt him. Something cold and evil follows, lurking in the clouds above, shredding reality with its delusions. Madness and sanity war, stretching and tearing the very fabric of existence. The dead shall rise.

While set in the same world as the first two , this one IMO is nowhere as good as the previous books. I loved the first two whereas this one was just ok.
It has some good ideas and interesting characters but I could just have easily given it a miss.

    51bXER8x-vL._SX332_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

To escape the hell she created, a woman must team up with a novice warrior and return to her homeland in this gritty epic fantasy where delusions are literally made real.

Zerfall awakens in an alley, wounded and unable to remember her past. Chased by an assassin out into the endless wastes of the desert, she is caught, disfigured, and left for dead. Her scabbard is empty, but the need for answers—and the pull of her sword—will draw her back to the city-states.

When Jateko, a naïve youth, accidentally kills a member of his own tribe, he finds himself outcast and pursued across the desert for his crimes. Crazed from dehydration, dying of thirst and hunger, he stumbles across Zerfall.

For decades the brothers of the Sixth Order have fought a savage war against the Lonak clans amidst the frozen peaks of their Dominion.

I thought this one was a ok read. It kinda reminded me a bit of Harry Potter. Not sure if I will continue with series as IMO I have a ton of better books waiting to be read. But we will see.

    The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

A stand alone tale outside the main series. As well at the great story the main thing I love about this series is that Robin is not the main character.
I enjoyed this one a lot apart from a small niggle.
If the assassain was able to climb the wall all the time then why did they need Robins men to open the gate?.
Great to see all the old characters again.

    51NGispYm+L.jpg
Autumn 1191 and Robert, Earl of Locksley, also known as the notorious outlaw Robin Hood, and his loyal lieutenant Alan Dale, are returning home fresh from victory in the Third Crusade. A short Novelette set in the world of "The Anubis gates" .Only a taste and nowhere as good as the original .But for all that a ok read.
Definitely not worth the price .Only for completists.
    41THJKGCmgL._SX309_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg
Tim Powers makes a triumphant return to the setting of The Anubis Gates with a tale that features the beggar clown Horrabin, and one who opposes him. In the slum known as the St. Giles rookery in 19th century London, the beggar guild run by Horrabin the Clown is the last resort of the down-and-out. Horrabin is rumored to maim his people to make them more effective mendicants, and when dimwitted beggar Isaac Fairchild is summoned by the clown, he fears the worst.

A 10/10 for me ,and now my No:1 post apocalypic read ,followed by Swan song and The Stand. Not sure how much is due to cult of the new as I read the others when they came out ,but for now its no:1.

    41cAL2RZ6-L._SX360_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg
A decadent rock star. A deeply religious radio host. A disgraced scientist. And a teenage girl who may be the world’s last hope. From the mind of Chuck Wendig comes an astonishing tapestry of humanity that Harlan Coben calls “a suspenseful, twisty, satisfying, surprising, thought-provoking epic.”
