Only halfway through Season 3 and finding it a much improved beast to the dawdling, baggy second season.

This seems to be the consensus amongst most people I know who've seen it. But, I just can't be bothered at this point. I can see myself maybe leaving it for some time when I've little else to be watching.

I left S2 off for a long time as well, only watched it this year, but it was very poor compared to S1 and that's kinda sealed the deal for me, I reckon.

Finished watching Dark S2 last night - as with S1 it was excellent and brought in some intriguing new ideas, along with character developments.

The only downside is that due to the plot and spread of the cast, the recap for S1 doesn't really help get you up to speed if you watched the previous season ages ago. Best bet is to watch it all together - I'll be doing a rewatch ahead of next year's final season. There's also a Netflix minisite that is handy for checking who's who, but that may have spoilers (though they are good about spoiler warnings, including for which episode and season the spoiler would apply).

i think they worked out who to pair with who and there was some great comedic teams in season 3

Stranger Things 3 was grand, not enough Hal.
Murray and the Russian were great in it.

I agree with that to a point. But I wasn't loving Joyce and Hopper, although once they added Murray and Alexi it was much improved.
I think Jonathan and Nancy are really pointless though. It felt a bit like "well, these characters exist so we better put them somewhere or people will notice they're missing"
It's funny how from that group of older teens, Steve, who was supposed to be a one season character who stayed a jerk, is actually one of the most popular characters and serves a lot more purpose in the plot.

Watching the first episode of Stranger Things Season 3 a day after finishing Dark Season 2 is a bit like following up a really good steak with a decent but unexceptional hamburger.

Like...there's nothing wrong with it, and I particularly like the score, but it's getting close to being empty-calories viewing and as season-openers go that wasn't great. I hope they can figure out something more to do with Hopper, because him as snarling ineffectual dad-stand-in is a bit dull.

At least Winona seemed to have more fun this season.

Stranger Things Twee. Creaky and uneven. The problem is, once you get rid of the retro nostalgic stuff, like Will binning Dungeons and Dragons, all you're left with is cheesy teen angst padding out the more dramatic sections.

Anyone else watching Jon Favreau's "The Chef Show"? The short animations between the scenes really begin to jar but the focus on the food is excellent and it's a nice follow up to the film and it definitely seems like Favreau has become a pretty decent cook.

    I absolutely love that show.
The last couple down at the BBQ place....oh my god, food heaven.
Lovely episodes with the Marvel folk as well, and Roy Choi is such an adorable guy.

The Highwaymen on netflix is highly recommendable.
The plot is rather streched thin over the long duration, but the tension is superb

It won't affect us here in Ireland as it is free to air.

However Netflix picked up the rights to screen The Eurovision in the Americas for the next few years.

I wonder is this a testing ground to see what they can do with Live Streaming of major events.

Not necessarily on-topic, but apparently Netflix's US subscribers is way down compared to its forecast:

    https://www.theverge.com/2019/7/18/20699037/netflix-earnings-report-q2-streaming-wars-disney-apple-warnermedia-international
The company saw its first major loss in US subscribers last quarter, and a mere 2.7 million paid customers added globally, nearly half of what was forecast. Stocks dropped by more than 10 percent just after the report came out. It’s a terrifying slowdown for a service that’s based on subscriber growth, and raises new questions about how long the company can justify its content spending spree.

Now, online outlets love hyperbole, but surely at some point these corporations realise that growth is not infinite, sooner or later the subscription numbers would taper off (then again, maybe CEOs presume to have their golden parachute by then).

Wonder if this is going to affect how it commissions productions, or indeed its approximate three-seasons-then-cancel policy. Could be a death-knell for their particularly expensive productions

That looks ... pretty good actually. Certainly splashy, and just different enough to perhaps avoid the inevitable GoT comparisons.

Could do with a nice full ratio YouTube link though, those squared off Twitter videos are a pox.

Watched a few good series this weekend:
French series Family business is excellent. Great comedy.
Thick of it british comedy also good.

Happy Valley is a great series. Wonder if there will be more seasons of it?

They are doing a 3rd series of Happy Valley but Sally Wainwright (writer) is doing another series of Last Tango in Halifax first, and then a second series of Gentleman Jack. So I wouldn't expect Happy Valley 3 anytime soon.

Quite enjoyed Asiz Ansari's latest standup although directed horrendously at times. Spike Jonze, you don't need to be flashy ALL THE TIME!

Also bought into the 'When They See Us' hype.. two episodes in, excellent stuff!

When They See Us is so good but god it makes me angry. Worth looking at the New York Times archive to see contemporary reports on it.

Mile 22 starring Mark Walberg is good action movie. Nothing special but just good fast action with plenty of cgi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

I can safety say Mile 22 is one of the worst action films I have ever seen.

Can't find this. Is it on the Irish Netflix or some international version?
