“1920s themed” with food service! Interesting.

Work has been ongoing since January: https://twitter.com/endacunningham/status/1140552440946876417?s=21

Fully reclining seats and restaurant food delivered to your seat.
Just what anyone wants, someones head in their face and the smell of garlic chips.

If it's like other dine in cinemas, the chairs will be pretty big, plenty of space between yourself and the person next to you.

The only problem I have with those paces is the distraction. If it's one of the places that they can summon a waiter with a button and have them constantly bringing beer, it'll be awful. Way too much noise.

Cinema opened today. 3 screens of 10 ready. They have reduced ticket prices but it’s for testing purposes. So there is a chance the movie will stop for a fire alarm!

    Shoulda called it The Promniplex.

Here's your coat. Get out. :p

On a separate note, looks fabulous from the photos I've seen.

Do you just have to rock up in person to see what's on? I didn't see it listed on their site?

I think it's a soft opening: able bodied 18+'s only, let in on the understanding that staff are still being trained. So likely not listed yet.

Proper opening day is sometime in early August.

Yes, as stated above, it’s a soft opening for adults only. Official opening is August 9th.

They can feck off with those prices. Be interesting to see what price the Omnipass is when they make it available for Salthill. Works out at amazing value if you're a regular cinema goer.

Very comfortable, great leg room... I understand that 14 euros is expensive but eye cinema charge the same for their luxery screen but in fairness the seats in omniplex are better and roomier..

    Price gouging.

That'll put a lot of people off the place straight away.

They're marketing themselves as Screen 7 in the Eye except across the entire cinema. It might actually keep out some of those less desirables you sometimes have to share a screen with.
E.g. Some teenage wan thought it'd be cool to take a selfie with Thor on the screen in the background.

€4 more than the Eye, who's ordinary screens are perfectly fine is asking for a kicking.
I don't know how they expect to maintain that price across 7 screens.
I've been in screen 7 in the Eye a few times and never seen it close to full.

they should be glad, in my father's time[ 30's/40's] there were 2 cinema's in Wicklow Town, in my time 70's /80's there was 1, now it's 2019 and we don't have any , were supposed to be living in the county town and now even a cinema, during the 'Celtic Tiger someone wanted to build a shopping centre +cinema but the council seen fit to refuse planning , 'The Garden of Ireland ' nothing in it but weeds.

The 30/40's offered little beyond the cinema.

The 70/80's gave us 2 channels

Now, stream anything you want directly on to the device in your hand. Hard to compete except in the larger population centers

Personally I can't wait to try out the new venue

I love going to the cinema and would pay a little extra to avoid people messing about and annoying me (I’ve walked out of IMC before and got a refund because messing was so bad).
I’m a bit confused about the food delivery in the new cinema. Do they deliver food and drinks to your seat? How do they do that without disturbing all the people around you? Does it happen all the way through the film or just in trailers?
I’m turning into a grumpy old man!!

We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say.

Did they play 30 minutes of adverts before the show? That might be worth 4 quid to some.

I went to the Lion King the last day in Screen 10. Seats are brilliant. Although, in full recline, you lose the bottom of the screen with the seats on front (Screen 10 anyways). Sound is the new Dolby Atoms which is a far superior offering than the other cinemas in town and would require a significant fit out to compete at that level in my opinion. We got two student tickets (happy days!), medium combo (drink and popcorn) and bottle of water for €29.50.

To compare ticket prices at all cinemas:

    Recline @ Omniplex - €14 - adult
    Galactic Screen @IMC - €12 - adult
    Luxury Screen @ Eye - €13.75 - adult
    Palas - €11.50 - adult

So, if you’re looking for that luxury experience, there’s not much in it when you compare. However, Galactic and Luxury screens are generally options you don’t have to choose. Most movies are often in the other screens especially the blockbusters and come with lower ticket prices between €9-€11.50. So if you just want to see a movie, then IMC, Eye and Palas will provide better value for money for putting your bum on a seat. However, if you want the best experience Galway can offer in cinema terms, then the Omniplex is your best option at this time. This assessment excludes the Omnipass option, which appears like a good deal if you go to the cinema regularly.

The Eye has planning in (maybe granted) for extending into the old iRadio part of the building and the planning includes for 3 or 4 boutique screens i.e luxury screens. It will be interesting to see if they proceed with this.

You know what I'd love to see in Galway, an IMAX screen. I reckon IMC could work one into the Oranmore cinema pretty handy.

At a risk of sounding slightly obsessed with the concept of reclining seating, how far do they recline? Are you actually laying flat?

Is Omniplex the only cinema in Galway that offers an unlimited pass? I live in Oranmore so getting to Salthill to go to the Cinema would be too much hassle.

IMC were going to bring out an unlimited pass called Infinity but I have heard nothing about it in over a year.

Palás have memberships. Don't think there's an unlimited option, but I know people that have it and reckon it saves you money if you go fairly regularly (think they said more than once a month). I barely ever get to the cinema so haven't looked into it :pac:

The OmniPass pricing is currently about 20 quid a month but that wont cover the new Salthill cinema because it's a fancy deluxe one or whatever.

They said they're sorting out the website and pricing for it and it will be available in a few weeks. I'm guessing it will be 25 to 30 a month though

It's too far for me as well, really wish IMC would bring out their unlimited option.

No, you're not laying flat. IMO the maximum recline is about 45 degrees. Also the actual seat slides forward on its frame as you recline so you are not reclining into the row behind you, if that makes sense.

Booked in with the family to check it out this weekend. Interesting to see from the seat selection how small the theatre must be. There was only 5 rows of seats and holds < 70 people.

Is it like watching a big screen tv?

Given the new layout, the entrance to each screen is at what would have been projection room level from the original design. So now instead of entering the screen at the base of the tiered seating, you enter from the back and work your way down. As the rows are about twice the width there is about half the seats than the original cinema had planned. The original cinema screen layout would have been very similar to the Eye and IMC. But they decided to not have patrons going down two flights of stairs to the cinema entrances from road level and now the toilets and staff rooms are at the ground floor of the basement level. The cinema feels somewhat smaller than it was before the new fit out. But I enjoyed the experience. 1 negative to the back entrance is a shadow is projected onto the screen as people walk down the steps similar to what happens in the IMC because their tiered seating is too high.

It's available as an option on the website now for "galway-Salthill". 17 95 per month. Good deal!

I checked on my phone and Salthill is “greyed out” i.e. not available yet. €17.95 appears to be for all cinemas outside of Dublin and Cork in ROI. Can someone else check and confirm please? If so, it’s a great deal considering 1 adult ticket is €14. I’d go to the cinema more than once a month so it would seriously save me money! But since it’s a D’luxx cinema, I imagine it will be at least €19.95 if not more!

Just checked, sorry you are right. What I did was select the region option outside of Dublin (I missed that they had salthill there greyed) and then in the next step you can select salthill as your local cinema.... Best to wait for them to confirm. I'd be interested in it too.

Yea, I think they'll struggle. I'll go have a look but doubt I'll be back unless they do the pass. Imc 10 euro on a Wednesday with popcorn and coke.

I was there last Saturday for the 8pm screening of The Lion King. I got to my seat between 8.00 and 8.05 and the film had already started.

We sat down about 5 minutes before the advertised start time and the film started bang on time. I was disappointed there were no trailers beforehand, just ads. BTW if you are planning to buy popcorn etc there was a huge queue for that so make sure to allow plenty of time. I'm pretty sure some folks missed the start of the film because they were queueing for snacks. Also I heard someone say the toilets are in the basement so that could take a bit of time if a bathroom break was required!

It's definitely still undergoing more works (there's scaffolding in the hallway) so it's a bit soon to be giving a proper opinion but I liked what I saw.

Staff seem very friendly (even stand at the door on the way out when the film's done which is a nice touch).

It's old fashioned interior but the screens are actually nice. Lovely reclining seats that were really comfy and they're allocated so you don't need to be in too early beforehand. The only drawback is that it is extremely noticeable when somebody gets up as they obstruct the projector a bit. Not the end of the world by any means and it could be fixed down the line.

Will definitely be going again in the near future.

Checked it out this afternoon and was really impressed. The manager happened to overhear us talking about what a positive thing it could be for Salthill in general and told us the 4th screen opened yesterday. I'm not sure if it was a glitch or not but our assigned seating for 4 had an unexpected row cutting off one of us. But someone was in our seats anyway. I'm not so sure how an island of rule-breakers will fare with assigned seating. Maybe it will just be a free-for-all as I imagine most people won't make an issue of it. The chairs are plush and it's really easy to get comfortable with the reclining option. The armrest is still shared with your neighbour tho. That said, the spacing is such that you aren't going to annoy anyone stretching out and the tiers are enough I doubt someone tall would be a problem blocking your view. The manager caught us on the way out to ask what we thought and we were very positive first impression and assured there will ever only be a trailer or two before the show. For us, being we don't go out to the movies often (movies are already what we do at home most weekends) it will be worth the extra cost for the comfy seats and not paying twice (ticket + babysitter) to watch 30+ minutes to ads and guilt inducing public service announcements.
