    I know this it the Social & Fun forum, so I'm just cheking, ye're not actually getting worked up about any of below?
    I think this is a great move, specifically some of the examples the article specifies

    bondsman = bonds-person
    pregnant woman = pregnant employee
    manpower = human effort
    Firemen\firewomen = firefighters
    he or she = the attorney or the merchant

    Imagine being a young girl hearing people who protect you are policemen, or save you from a burning house are firemen.

    This article, in an effort to be click baity, which worked completely here, referenced the most facetious of the name changes...
    manhole = maintenance hole

    "There is power in language" "This is a small move, but it matters."
    agree completely

    It's not a great move. It's absolutely pointless and pandering to arseholes. The same arseholes who find victimhood everywhere.

    I have no issue with fireman or policeman being changed as the collective term for the occupation to firefighter or police officer as both sexes do the job. Makes sense for a female firefighter to be a firewoman. I don't however think it should be frowned upon to call a male fire fighter a fireman. That's what he is.

    Pregnant woman, manpower and manhole are the ones that are so ****ing stupid. Only a woman can get pregnant. Manpower refers to human and manhole is a word that has no need to be changed. I doubt any young girls will see a manhole and be dissuaded from sewage work because of the name

    There is indeed power in language, so don't dilute this power with your pathetic attempt to be "inclusive" for the perpetually offended by making words meaningless.

    Nah they're just looking to head off any kind of nuisance lawsuits of any kind. I suspect you're really just trolling here and pretty poorly at that.

    I'm genuinely scratching my head here.

    Women who think they are men could get offended if they get pregnant and are misgendered as a woman.

    I believe this stuff will be in their rewriting of their codes but that one is troublesome if she ain't an employee and you would think there must be some reference to other types of pregnant women in there already.

    I would be more offended if somebody called me a they or them to be honest. The pronouns are really stupid.

    Language changes all the time. It was different before you started speaking it, it'll change during your lifetime and it will continue to change after you're gone.

    You say the other people are "arseholes" who "who find victimhood everywhere". But you're getting cross about it. So how would you characterise your view on it? Typically people tend to say something along the lines of "I'm amused", or "I'm just pointing it out". So what makes you so different from the arseholes who find victimhood everywhere?

    They covers all the bases on the he/she/they/whatever pronoun. It's also nicely formal. Now if they were looking to dump a polite form you on us as in other languages I'd be a bit more bothered.

    On the other hand, it seems to really annoy a very different kind of arsehole, who also finds victimhood everywhere. :)

    It's usage that changes. Even so much of what we use in basic grammar has remained unchanged for centuries. Some forms have altered, become less popular or just been dropped. What has changed is the lexis and neologisms regularly show up and disappear.

    Pretty sure they tended to use terms like inspection chamber cover and vault cover here officially anyway.

    Access point is a good catch all and it actually explains what it is.

    Loons, freaking loons.

    The westerner world has more to worry about than this type of shyteology.

    You'd have to wonder what western civilization is coming to. Do some people really have this much free time on their hands and, if so, could it not be put to better use than this?! Maybe we were better off when we were distracted by all those wars! (Tongue in cheek btw!)

    I'm not amused nor did I point it out. I'm not cross either. I just gave my opinion

    The difference between me and the different arseholes who find victimhood everywhere is that I just merely gave my opinion on a topic which was brought up by someone else; they are campaigning to get words changed and to make other people accept their reality.

    Call them whatever you want, I’ll continue to refer to them by the correct names. Speech policing is unacceptable and must be rejected in all forms.

    In fairness, no harm in giving manhole a makeover( access point my fav) and it is a made up word in its own right. Bondsman to bondsperson is a no-brainer too. After that though it just gets progressively more stupid.

    I welcome equality when it comes to smelling of sewer sh*te.

    Ah. So just to clarify, you're not advocating to stop the change in language? Because that would make you like the asrseholes, right?

    Jesus, fine. If you want to have a big "gotcha" moment, take it.

    Me saying that it is ridiculous to not be able to call a woman who is pregnant "a pregnant woman" makes me just as much of an arsehole as the people who are pushing for it.

    100 internet points for you sir.

    What is nobody talking about the worst aspect of this story? There is a person in the world with the first name Rigel.

    Well done for admitting it. I've seen so many of these threads and nobody ever admits that they and the people they call assholes, are simply2 cheeks of the same ass-hole.

    That's right. It's important to the victim process to make ure you pretend you're banned from saying the words. Also important to invent punishments. Very important to the victim complex.

    Exactly. Getting upset about words changing is a sure sign of a pansy who is in need of a war to harden them up. That's what you meant, right?
