Settopbox banned for two days for pretty much doing the exact same thing he was warned for earlier

Just to say about the costs thing, I remember when Sky Sports cost £2.99 per month (1992). But Sky (with good reason) regards the Premier League as absolutely essential to its business model, and has been prepared to pay above the odds to retain it. This has resulted in a massive bubble in costs as successive companies (Setanta, ESPN, BT, and most recently Prime Video) compete against Sky for the rights to packages. And the broadcasters including Sky have had to recoup this money somehow.

Have Sky announced any prices yet? Seems strange considering it's been launched on the 1st August. Id say people will be shocked once it is announced, and not in a good way

I don't know, someone with knowledge of EU laws regarding selling tv subscriptions outside the country where the broadcaster has a licence for, might answer? If it was easy, legal and cheaper, why haven't we all been subscribed to Canal + or Bein Sports before now ?
DAZN is legal to buy and use anywhere in Europe (afaik) and there are forums for syncing the English audio. That's only €9.99 per month.
    I haven't tried it myself.
Amazon coming this year too, and that's included in Prime sub. Anyone with illegal IPTV on their Firesticks need to block updates for it, but that has been said it mightn't make any difference as they may be able to switch something anyway.

Here is a decent article from the times last week
    https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/other-sports/pay-for-play-is-sport-on-tv-in-danger-of-eating-itself-1.3950334

It probably won't be long before FuboTV, ESPN+, Fox Soccer Match Pass, YoutubeTV or Hulu are an option over here without the need for a vpn or workarounds.

It would be nice to see one of the Irish channels dedicate sports time to the minor sports, FTA.
People like to watch sports and the interest might be much better than expected.
It would surely beat repeats of repeats of nonsense programs we presently see.

I could see myself watching the likes of
    table tennis
    squash
    badminton
and more, if they were shown for specific competitions.

None of those would be costly ..... and I am certain there are lots of other minor sports they could choose.

No, I do not expect that to happen :)

Be nice to see an Irish channel show Irish sports for beginners.

    Yes, that too.

I am sure there are lots of opportunities to show various less popular sporting events, if only the will was there.

They need to make all games available to view.

I have sky and bt but sometimes the game I want to watch isn't on any TV channel.

I'll stream it if there is no other option.

That's the problem. Look at the premier league subs available outside UK and Ireland. They get every single game for a fraction of the price. Where you now need SKY, BT and Premier sports for a huge fee and only get a fraction of the games. Until this model is changed people will continue to stream illegally and there will always be a way around it.

I'm confused about the article. Are they looking to block the people hosting the stream or the people watching it? Most of the hosts are based overseas so how can they block them. Also, these guys use VPN that constantly change IP addresses.

If it's the person watching the stream, then are they going to block access to that particular IP, the whole streaming protocol or block all internet access? Not sure where they would stand if it was the latter 2, first one would not block anything - just get another stream

Was researching iptv and the like this week, contacting people offering on done deal. Almost spent €250 on a box with “everything”, might have dodged a bullet, time will tell. Only wanted football because eir lost BT Sports. Bought an Amazon Fire Tv stick in the Amazon sale today, €23 hopefully someone will find a way round all this.

My guess is that as every steam will be of an offically licensed broadcast that something will be embedded in the image that can be identified

I wouldn't pay them 7 euro a month tbh when it's a free easy work around (and no i'm not posting up how). Sky/BT imo got greedy and this brought about the current massive numbers of people with boxes or watching on laptops.

Yeah, they are the greedy ones. :)

The ISPs apparently will block the source IPs of the streams.
The blocking list will be updated twice during the game.

Yes the article was a bit confused/confusing. :)

They brought in the exact same law last year in the UK.
They find the sources for the streams or providers and block their IP's. It works for a few hours and then everything is bck to normal.
It's very hard for them to block them outright, but anyone with the firesticks and illegal iptv will take a hammering this year. And anyone with UK base illegal IPTV will also take a huge hammering.

I'm looking at buying a DAZN month and see how it goes when the football starts.

Idiots believe a court order is an effective way to enforce a piracy block. No matter what they push for its already useless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,290 ✭✭✭✭J Mysterio

I expected them to try and close the net eventually. Piracy is huge, very widespread. People take no notice of it i.e. it's considered acceptable given the silly cost.

Thing is though - and I'm open to correction - the court order is for ISP's to block websites offering the illegal streams? So the ISP's need to somehow put their own energy and money into identifying the sites?

    A things about this:

    1) Hackers/ programmers always find a way.
    2) How can private companies be forced to use their resources to actively police compliance? Sure if they catch an offending website they can block it, but to search for them?
    3) Punters will still pirate if the risk is ostensibly on the website. It's only once there is a greater risk to the punter that there may be a deterrent.

They already do that. Streams I watch have a blurred section at the top right hand corner where something is embedded in the picture by the broadcaster. My provider just blurs it out. Always wondered why broadcasters don't actively move it around the screen during games.

As others have said, until all games every game week are available and at reasonable prices this will continue and this measure today is already easily bypassed. I'd like to be able to buy a package for just my clubs games but that won't happen until the TV bubble finally bursts which it will. Year on year growth in prices paid by the broadcasters for the packages has been getting smaller and smaller cos they just can't recoup those ever increasing costs via their customers. Overseas packages revenue continued to grow though.

Current tack is to try block the illegal streams and force people to pay their over priced charges but it won't work and there will eventually have to be a sanity check in Sky, BT and Premier league HQ.

Seeing as DAZN requires a VPN to work properly, is there a point to it? Once you have a decent subscription VPN, then why pay extra for DAZN?

The logic in my thinking was that (a) it was a good price for today only and a lot less risky than shelling out a couple of hundred for something I wasn’t sure would work come the start of the season and (b) it is what my nephew uses to stream PL so let him figure it out. Minimal financial loss, surely I deserve a C for that.

Can we drop the DAZN/circumventing regional restrictions talk please

For $150 a year on DAZN you get all PL, CL, Pro 12/Champions Cups/All NFL plus a whole array of other sports. If this was a available here they would be no need for illegal streams, even at double this price it would be good value.

Will do, but just to ask - Is DAZN not legal here? I was under the impression it was, it was just their choice or are currently unable (due to technical reasons) to offer it here.

I thought it was legal throughout EU. Like the Netflix law thing.

Isn't that a completely legal option though? Under EU law they're allowed to provide their service in any country no?

This sounds very much the same as when the ISP's blocked access to The Pirate Bay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,380 ✭✭✭STB.

Its just another anti piracy advertisement before the season starts.

The truth is what they are suggesting is impossible to implement. Someone who dropped in from another planet might believe that ISPs are interested in helping the EPL/Sky etc by policing the internet for anyone streaming.

Technically even if IP's were blocked, its a game of whack a mole.

Someone asked about buying Canal+ on Sat etc. Yeah its fine to buy goods within the EU etc for your own private use but to be honest you wont be interested anyway unless you speak the foreign language of that country. Only native languages are allowed on the commentary streams.

I don't know how anyone can watch the illegal internet streams, the quality is awful and the host sources are riddled with malware.

Someone said it earlier, its time for the EPL to think of a Netflix model.

Sorry, this is just incorrect. Perfect FHD quality streams are available through quality providers.
