For transactions less than 30 quid tap...over 30 Visa.

I try and limit use of cash and by using the card you can track your spending and realise how much money you waste.

If you use your phone you can tap over 30.

If you link your card to Google pay, you can tap your phone regardless of the price being below or above €30. I often simply don't even bring my wallet out with me to town etc.

Mostly contactless. I keep 200 in the wallet for the muggings.

On an unrelated note where do you expect to be at 3pm today?

Anyone else intrigued as to what injury that could possible be? :)

Broken right collarbone, arm in a sling for a few weeks. I'm right handed so it made it difficult to use cash. I found it easy enough to use the card with my left.

You won't be able to spend a €200 note anywhere. He is very clever.

You can track your spending, sure.

But I wonder does anyone actually do it at a granular level? Genuinely.

I find being able to track my spending scares me more :D

Went to ginzeng in the ilac shopping centre yesterday. Went to tap my phone..I almost died when the woman said cash only. I then remembered I had €20 in my wallet..the food was €19.50.

Felt like I was in the 3rd world having no choice but to use cash.

Cashless economy would be the future of the world. I also carry less cash and prefer to use debit card.

I would spend the same out and about using cash or card. I don't see why there should be a difference.

There are more reasons to use cash that not.
    Power outages
Your bank makes a mistake somehow and wipe your account
    Card readers being faulty
Annoying cash-carriers behind you in the queue
Card fraud is exploding, at least to rob me they have to face me
Untraceable, I don't want my bank or anyone to know how much I really spend on alcohol and cigarettes.

Cash all the way. Don't trust technology enough to go completely cashless tbh.

But I have seen both arguments here. One saying they spend more if they have a lot of cash in their pocket. The other saying they spend more because the card does not feel like real money. I think I am the normal one.

I mean if the bank wipes your account it’s irrelevant if you use cash or card, except the cash in your wallet at that time.

I can pay using contactless either by card or on my phone much more quickly than messing around with cash and getting change.

Very rarely use cash these days. I was in Iceland, the country not the shop, recently for a long weekend and I did't even get to see what Icelandic cash looked like, everyone there uses contactless and nobody bats an eyelid.

    Annoying cash carriers... gurl please!

Cash carriers are a pain - looking for it for ages and counting out coin- I feel like doing like the ginger wan on the An Post ad and tapping for them.

Card - tap, done. No issues

I have many years experience of using cash, and for me it is a quick process. Someone trying to dig out the right card from their bag or wallet causes the same delay as someone trying to find a €20 in their pocket.

A card is one item. Cash is rarely one item, and there is the change part of the transaction- no change with card. Card definitely faster

Cash is mostly used by drug users, tax evaders and cant-work-wont-work types nowadays.

People who are surprised that they actually have to pay for the items they have just bought will have to fumble around anyway, whether it's for a card or cash, no difference there, those who are prepared will have their card ready. I don't need to wait for the cashier to give me any change and as soon as the machine beeps I'm on my way.

You are out of practice with cash. For me it is a few seconds. If someone is in a queue there is no excuse for not having the cash ready, or the card immediately to hand when it is their turn. But I have seen both happening. If there is no queue it doesn't matter much.

Rarely use cash tbh. I'll often get some cash if I'm on the beer because it's easier than tapping, but outside of that I rarely would bother.

Probably spend less when I'm not carrying cash because once the money is out of your bank account, it feels like it's already spent. So I think nothing of spending what's in in my pocket, but will think twice when it has to come out of the account.

I had to withdraw cash from the atm for the first time in nearly a year the other day(normally get cashback if I need it). It took me a minute to remember how to use the machine. Just thankful no one was behind me.

I go to a butcher, a baker and a greengrocer regularly. I cannot think of any reason to buy extra steaks or bread just because I have a few twenties in my pocket.

I find myself using cash less and less. Contactless would be my most used method of payment. The guy where I usually get breakfast asked me if I carry cash last week and the answer is rarely.

I used to have about twenty in cash in my wallet but in the last year I dont bother so much.

Over 90% of my transactions now would be non cash and prob around 80% contactless

Same here, I'd say I pay everything by card/contactless unless I have to pay by cash... Of course I still bring some cash in my wallet just in case, but not very much, though.

Some banks, like Permanent TSB, will punish their customers by charging "cash advance fee" when the customers withdraw cash using the credit card.

This is to force you towards card only, which suits the banks best.

Our local Tesco doesn't allow taps for above €30. Very annoying.

I only carry cash for the canteen at work and I hate it. I hate the weight of coins in my pocket, I hate having to remember how much I have on me, I hate having to go out of my way to find a working ATM.

I use my revolut card linked to my phone for almost everything. Not concerned about fraud as the retailer never gets my real card number, and the card itself only has a limited amount of money on it.

Think of it more like you're wandering past a shop and you think of something you'd like to buy but you don't really need.

It's fifty quid, and sure you've sixty in your pocket, so why not.

In the scenarios you describe where you're going in to buy something specific, then it doesn't matter what's in your pocket. You buy what you came to buy either way.

But for me, money i mo phóca is more likely to result in impulse buys.

Thats a good argument but if you are spending only cash then you can't spend money you haven't got in your hand. With a card its not always money you have in your account.
