Thanks for the nice comments and best of luck with the car. It’s a superb example, hard to believe it’s going on 4 years old. If you think it’s good now then wait until you get some Revo software onto it!

Do you bring in cars for anyone who wants to get one from the UK? I'm looking at doing it in the first half of next year but the spec is similar enough to this one you're talking about which doesn't seem to be too common in Ireland.

I have a manual Mk7 GTi PP on 18s and have been very impressed with it. I live near some nice twisties that I travel on weekly and have not found it wanting or unexciting. On the contrary, I've had some epic drives (including one yesterday evening) and consider the PP model a close to perfect all-rounder for Irish roads. ..........

Yeah, I'd broadly agree with you

Again, my comments are essentially to someone who reckons he wanted 300bhp and he thought a Golf GTi might be a bit tame for him. I can see where he's coming from too.

    A great all rounder ............

On the GTIs I think if I was going to that level of spending I would just buy brand new even considering the extras they seem to be knocking a max of 2k off them as Demo if there was 5k of them fair enough but there isn’t worth the bit extra to get a brand new one that hasn’t got the sh!t driven out of it for 10k km and have some random County number plate on it which will be 6 months old next week. I am far from a reg snob but if the savings aren’t there no point buying demo.

In saying all that I will need to ring around to see what’s in stock there may not be many new ones sitting in Ireland.

You cannot order a brand new one now though, you'd be waiting 6 months or longer for a factory order by which time the regular Mk8 will be on sale. Dealers know this hence the strong prices for 2019 demo models. And I'd also doubt you would get 5k knocked off a demo not unless the Mk8 GTi is sitting in the showroom next to it. Having a car to trade against it also diminishes that.

Surely on a €45k+ car a demo would have to be at least €5k less if there's the 10k kms CIP mentions on it?

Maybe not if there’s no new cars available?

Very close to the TCR price at 45, are they sold out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,551 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

A demo wouldn't normally have 10k kms on it, they usually sell demos with around 5k km on them to maximize their resale value.

I won't pretend to know what the usual demo mileage is but of the 3 below.......it varies from 3k to 9k kms and they're all priced much of a muchness.
    bazz26 wrote: »

My sorento was a demo, screen price was 83% of new price, it was iirc 4 months old and had 11k kms on it.
I traded in a yoke worth peanuts and they knocked another couple of k off.
I don't think I was robbed or anything but dealers do make money like so I doubt I got an exceptionally out of the ordinarily good deal :)

The white gti is a cracker.

I think the facelift touches have made the white GTIs look way better, and I think the opposite about tornado red. In red the mk7 looks better to me, there's something about the new black plastic surround on the front fogs that sticks out in a bad way.

That is not what any of the VW dealers said to me today they are all happy to let you order and said I would have it end of September worst case. Not looking good for there being any available from stock which is a pain as new orders are 1k euro more now due to all the emission changes.

They're in mad money territory now IMO. A new PP GTI is now retailing for more than I paid for an R 4 years ago.

But look around all cars in that hot hatch segment are mad money and have gone up in price it’s not just the GTI. 46k for a Leon Cupra were they not like 38k when they first came out. Spec an S3 to have the same extras as a GTI and your at 60k.

A new GTD is €45k - they are all gone crazy in price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,035 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

I don't know are the PP and DSG essential. I'd get the technology pack, upgrade the sound system and if you really want extra power get a Revo map or similar. If your going to get value out of the lsd it's not going to be under anyway normal spirited driving. You need to be driving the stones out of it, if it's not going on a track or your a headcase in the wet I don't see much benefit. The car is 100% in standard spec.

If they can guarantee one within that time frame then fair enough but I'd err on the side of caution/cynicism in the event they were just trying to take order today by telling you what you wanted to hear.

Cupra is gone up like the GTi, both are models which have been on the market for a few years and didn't get major changes for WLTP because they are in the final phase of their life cycle The S3 was always more expensive than the GTi or Cupra because it a premium badge and competes directly against the likes of the BMW M135i rather than the GTi/Cupra.

The S3 is an R competitor and the Audi was always 7-10k more than an R.

It's also 100 percent intentional that it's significantly more expensive. VW group don't want to compete with themselves, so that gap will always be there to differentiate them.

They've done exactly that though. The Cupra was €39k last year now they're €45k and they still don't have ACC, digital dash not even front sensors. It's still more powerful than a GTI PP but it's less spec and a less desirable badge. People were already overlooking the Cupra when it was €39k.

€42k for a VRS DSG and €45k for the Cupra and GTI PP. No sub-40k now. I say these prices will be the end of the sub 35k year old Cupra models now.

I appreciate this is a golf thread, but if I was buying a hot hatch with my own money I would definitely test drive this...

    d43864c90df075c94489ddbe4ca5ffe9a5d2f17ff88e9a607f822baef791a6d6.jpg

It ticks a lot of boxes. It's manual, makes silly noises, looks the business, is rare and very few people realise it's even a hot hatch. I'd much rather drive that than a hot golf.
5 year unlimited mileage warranty too.... What "premium" brand does that?

One of the chaps here has a review of the i30n...

He's a review of an R there as well...were still awaiting on the GTi and S3 reviews and a head to head shoot out from him...

Am I right in saying Hyundai are working on a DSG model?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,027 ✭✭✭MidMan25

The i30N is class, definitely worth considering if you value driving experience over all else. I enjoy driving my Up GTI much more than the VRS 245 I had prior to it which would be the same mechanically as the GTI PP. It just has the fun factor and puts a smile on your face. I've had so many compliments on it too, people love the cheekiness I think :) Test drive all the options on your list before deciding.

Can I throw this in the mix?! :p

(Excuse the clickbait caption, it's more to grab the attention on YouTube, I don't think it's better than the R. Well not overall anyway!)

Hoping to get my hands on a TCR GTi in July.

I think a DCT model is all but confirmed and rumours of a future 4wd model too.

Can't get i30N on PCP though as far as I know.

Test drove the i30n last week. Loved it and am considering one.
Wheels were in absolute tatters though which was surprising

I think it depends on how you like to drive and where your regular driving takes place. I went from an auto to a manual because I missed the level of control a manual gives you, but I know for some people, they love the quick shifts of the DSG and value auto for city driving.

I had a non-PP manual for a weekend and while it was a lovely car, it definitely needed the diff up front as it was a little understeery and not great at getting the power down in the wet. I will caveat that by saying that the front tyres weren't in great shape. After having lived with a PP now for 4 months, I'm glad I went for it. The extra power isn't noticeable, but the extra traction is both in the wet and the dry. Don't forget the PP has upgraded brakes too, extra stopping power is always a good thing. And you don't need to be "driving the stones out of it" to feel the benefit :)

So for city driving or motorway cruising, yeah, you probably don't need the PP. If you enjoy driving and like to cover ground efficiently and effectively, I would recommend the PP over non-PP.

Regarding the upgraded sound-system, the non-PP I drove had the Dynaudio set-up and I was completely unimpressed. I found it hard to get a nice sound from it.

These look like very good value secondhand now, saw a couple of 181s around the 30k mark. Great value for what you get.

I hate the way dealers do this, stick an ad up and don't follow up with photos for days. I just want to ogle the clubsport god dammit!

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/volkswagen-golf-gti-clubsport-2-0tsi-265bhp-auto/22230239

EDIT - Ok, the two clubsports that are up aren't listed as available till July, so I can kind of understand it, but it's all to common a practice.

What's the bet owners are trading up to TCR's

Problem with that is that it's great value for the outlay, but a 40k GTI will cost you less over the 2 or 3 years when it comes to trade in time. So in reality, the golf is the cheaper car.
