I'll live and let live when smokers stop bitching about not being able to smoke in certain areas that have under law for years, planes, bus's, public buildings..etc

And did you see many people hear say they want to smoke on buses, planes etc? I'm a smoker, and I hate people smoking on buses and the like

You might as well except it because its going to happen anyway, weather you like it or not.

Maybe, but it still gets up my nose that people feel the need to be so condescending about it all. Politeness and consideration on both sides cost nothing, something which seems lost on many people on this thread.

funnily enough, when there was 8 of us in a pub in england last weekend, only one of us smoked, and that was Dustaz.

its a shame that smokers compare their habits with such stupid analogies as the ones put forward here, because at the end of the day, they are putting smoke into the air that other people breath.
im sure if selafield was still pumping uranium into the irish sea there would be uproar, but hey, as long as you can still smoke, thats ok.

smoking is a crutch, plain and simple.
there is no benefit to it, there are no plus sides to it, and yet people still do it. hell, i smoked for 11 years. its a shame it took me so long to stop.
and to think of all the embarassed moments i had when i had to smoke alone, or the little internal joy of victory when i got someone to start smoking again, or to find someone i could smoke with so that i wouldnt be a billy no mates.
lighting up in a resteraunt when no one else at the table smoked. having to leave the no smoking parts of a pub so that i could smoke.
and for what?
so i could look cool? er, no. then what for? because there is no other reason to smoke. its not stress. its not nicotine. its nothing. it takes more will to keep smoking in the face of knowing what you are doing to yourself and others is completely wrong, that it does to stop. it takes zero will power to stop. all it takes is to just not want to smoke anymore.
now, ive gone through my 'im not smoking anymore' preachy phase, and i would never tell anyone not to smoke. i will ask people not to smoke in my direction, but its not going to stop me from pointing out that there is no reason to smoke.
except smokers tend to get really touchy when you tell them they have a filthy, disgusting, smelly habit that will kill them and waste all their money. in fact they get so hot under the collar about it they start threads like this one.
but they only get hot under the collar beacuse in the end, under it all, they know that cigarettes taste disgusting, and they pretty much hate themselves for continuing to smoke. dont blame them.
its tough knowing that you are wasting so much money, and giving yourself bad breath and wrinkles at the same time, and yet having to keep up the facade that smoking is cool and you enjoy it, and that everyone else sucks, and smokers unite, and boo-yaa sucks to you etc.

best thing i ever did was stop smoking.

I should make it clear that i think cigarettes should be banned totally. right now. sale, advertising, promotion. Ban. Total. Immediate.

Of course you cant just stop smokers who are already addicted so youd need an outlet of no-brand fags for registered smokers. Say a chemist (oh the irony).

Thats feasable, and reasonable.

But its not the issue here. The issue is not that smoking is dangerous - it is. Its not if its disgusting - it is to some people. The issue is that you CANNOT expect people to stop doing something theyve been doing for donkeys years with the full blessing of the state (warnings haha yeh right) overnight.

Unlike the charming uruanium example, people have been allowed , nay sometimes ENCOURAGED to smoke in pubs since the year dot. THATS the problem.

Smokers are i think willing to compromise. Most of us are happy to not smoke in restaurants if its not permitted, flights, cinemas, public transport etc. All we want is a little frickin give and take on the pubs issue and a little less holier than thou preaching.

while nicotine is one of the most addicitive drugs in the world, there are very little withdrawl symptons. it only takes one drag to get addicted, and that will make you want more. but if you dont get it, its not going to kill you. in fact, it does bugger all apart from make you slightly irritable.

non smokers are also willing to compramise as well you know.
after all, i bet you smoked in my apartment over the weekend. i know merc did. yes i am a non smoker, and i hate it.
i compromised. so anyone that thinks im on an anti smoking high moral ground here can take that out of the equation.

by the way, you say smokers are encouraged to smoke inthe pub, and thats the problem?
