You might as well except it because its going to happen anyway, weather you like it or not.
Smoking in areas will be restricted more and more because its bad for people simple as that.

Its about as futile as boyracers bitching about not being able to speed and then complaining they have to pay high insurance for there suped-up cars.

Its a total waste of time!

While I'm all "hurrah for the ban!" ... does anyone think they'll seriously go up to someone in a pub who lights up on January the 1st and ask them to put it out?

I look forward to the idea of not choking on carciogenic fumes, or not having my clothes stink because of someone's "right" (can I exercise my "right" to whirl numchucks around?) but I just can't see it practically being enforced...

Dustaz, after your brief but highly notable cameo in the documentary about strippers on telly the other night, you of all people should know that a girl just doesn't like to be smoked on. One of them was asthmatic I think, and she used her inhaler daily to counter the ill effects of breathing while in a smoky atmosphere performing her craft.

I was brought to a jello wrestling place in LA about the size of the National Stadium many years ago by a mutual acquaintance of ours. He was a bit on the nervous side, smoking furiously, and when this stars'n'stripes bikini-clad, buxom blonde came over and offered to rub her tits in his face for a buck, the only proviso was no touching (naturally) and not to burn her with his cigarette. Her precise words were 'You're not goin' ta burn me with that thing are ya?'. He handed me his fag and the deed was done. I was subjected to it as well, and as a purely anthropological experience, it was, erm, interesting, but as an erotic experience, it was lacking. We were both disappointed by the lack of frisson, but interested by the texture of her large, scented silicone bosoms.

Anyway, it was an act of its time, as smoking is now banned everywhere in CA. Maybe there's a lesson to be learnt.

I said most. I don't know your sister so I can't tell you why.

And did you see many people hear say they want to smoke on buses, planes etc? I'm a smoker, and I hate people smoking on buses and the like

Maybe, but it still gets up my nose that people feel the need to be so condescending about it all. Politeness and consideration on both sides cost nothing, something which seems lost on many people on this thread.

and wtf, did EVERYONE see that bloody show on the repeat?

The smoky atmosphere lent the club a certain je ne sais quoi, dont know where we'd be without it.

I reckon we should make smoking entirely illegal. You'd enjoy it more then. I mean, smokes don't really do sod all for you on a chemical level (other than getting you addicted to nicotine), so it'd be nice to have the buzz of doing something illegal to go with them, eh?

You could join the dark side with those of us whose chemical pleasures are illegal, but who oddly enough don't feel the urge to get self-righteous and type in four foot high letters when someone suggests that maybe we shouldn't do it...

    Smokers are funny :)

(It's just a shame they smell so bad - the smell kinda detracts from teh funney.)

funnily enough, when there was 8 of us in a pub in england last weekend, only one of us smoked, and that was Dustaz.

its a shame that smokers compare their habits with such stupid analogies as the ones put forward here, because at the end of the day, they are putting smoke into the air that other people breath.
im sure if selafield was still pumping uranium into the irish sea there would be uproar, but hey, as long as you can still smoke, thats ok.

smoking is a crutch, plain and simple.
there is no benefit to it, there are no plus sides to it, and yet people still do it. hell, i smoked for 11 years. its a shame it took me so long to stop.
and to think of all the embarassed moments i had when i had to smoke alone, or the little internal joy of victory when i got someone to start smoking again, or to find someone i could smoke with so that i wouldnt be a billy no mates.
lighting up in a resteraunt when no one else at the table smoked. having to leave the no smoking parts of a pub so that i could smoke.
    and for what?
so i could look cool? er, no. then what for? because there is no other reason to smoke. its not stress. its not nicotine. its nothing. it takes more will to keep smoking in the face of knowing what you are doing to yourself and others is completely wrong, that it does to stop. it takes zero will power to stop. all it takes is to just not want to smoke anymore.
now, ive gone through my 'im not smoking anymore' preachy phase, and i would never tell anyone not to smoke. i will ask people not to smoke in my direction, but its not going to stop me from pointing out that there is no reason to smoke.
except smokers tend to get really touchy when you tell them they have a filthy, disgusting, smelly habit that will kill them and waste all their money. in fact they get so hot under the collar about it they start threads like this one.
but they only get hot under the collar beacuse in the end, under it all, they know that cigarettes taste disgusting, and they pretty much hate themselves for continuing to smoke. dont blame them.
its tough knowing that you are wasting so much money, and giving yourself bad breath and wrinkles at the same time, and yet having to keep up the facade that smoking is cool and you enjoy it, and that everyone else sucks, and smokers unite, and boo-yaa sucks to you etc.

best thing i ever did was stop smoking.
    and it was easy.

Actually, there was 2 smokers (me and merc) and one 'pretendy' smoker :P (he shall remain nameless because hes already posted here and hed look silly ;) )

Typical Alan Carr rant btw eamo :)

I should make it clear that i think cigarettes should be banned totally. right now. sale, advertising, promotion. Ban. Total. Immediate.

Of course you cant just stop smokers who are already addicted so youd need an outlet of no-brand fags for registered smokers. Say a chemist (oh the irony).

    Thats feasable, and reasonable.

But its not the issue here. The issue is not that smoking is dangerous - it is. Its not if its disgusting - it is to some people. The issue is that you CANNOT expect people to stop doing something theyve been doing for donkeys years with the full blessing of the state (warnings haha yeh right) overnight.

Unlike the charming uruanium example, people have been allowed , nay sometimes ENCOURAGED to smoke in pubs since the year dot. THATS the problem.

Smokers are i think willing to compromise. Most of us are happy to not smoke in restaurants if its not permitted, flights, cinemas, public transport etc. All we want is a little frickin give and take on the pubs issue and a little less holier than thou preaching.

Did he shíte on at you like that when ye were havin drinks in the pub in England?? If so I really hope you gave him a good box to the jaw.

I fúckin hate ex-smokers. Do they ever just shut the fúck up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

yep, i used the allen carr book.

no dr loon, i didnt tell anyone not to smoke. in fact i dont think i mentioned it at all.
like i said, i wouldnt preach at anyone to stop smoking. you know how stupid are yourself without me having to say it.
and we are having a discussion about it here, so i think im entitled to add my 2 cents worth, just like you have. not that it was worth 2c mind you. very little you say is ***.

although, i find it amusing that every smoker who has posted has been very aggressive about their habit.
full of 'If so I really hope you gave him a good box to the jaw.' and 'Yeah, you can spot it a mile away, bunch of self righteous cnuts'.

i mean, i only pointed out some valid points. but you seem to take it very personally. well, at least i smell nice :)

ruthie, if i sound like your fella, then maybe theres something in it :)
if youre hooked on crack cocaine and then give up, im sure youd want to tell the world about it and youd feel good about it :)
and well done to him. boo hiss to you though for still smoking ;)

anyway, to reply to dusty who it seems is the only one to have a proper say on the matter.

    nicotine addiction last 2 weeks.
that it. anyone wwho cant fight that should really stop breathing. the 'pangs' last for 5 seconds.
come on, tell me you can go past that.
while nicotine is one of the most addicitive drugs in the world, there are very little withdrawl symptons. it only takes one drag to get addicted, and that will make you want more. but if you dont get it, its not going to kill you. in fact, it does bugger all apart from make you slightly irritable.

non smokers are also willing to compramise as well you know.
after all, i bet you smoked in my apartment over the weekend. i know merc did. yes i am a non smoker, and i hate it.
i compromised. so anyone that thinks im on an anti smoking high moral ground here can take that out of the equation.

by the way, you say smokers are encouraged to smoke inthe pub, and thats the problem?
what, so its someone elses fault now?
    how does that work?

you sound like a typical smoker defending his right to stink up the place and pollute other peoples air.

as a non smoker, 'All we want is a little frickin give and take on the pubs issue and a little less holier than thou preaching'

by the way, why dont some of you try reading the allen carr book instead of talking rubbish about it.
i mean, your opinion is worth a lot more if you know what youre talking about

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,522 ✭✭✭Dr. Loon

WWM.... do you actually think I'm stupid. I am well aware of the damage smoking does to people and myself. I'm well aware how annoying it can be for non-smokers/ex-smokers and I try my best to respect this.

The thing is I don't want to give up. Really. I like smoking alot. I really like smoking. I am not stupid (although I smoke), I know the facts about smoking.... but I like it..... so.... well.... there ye go.

I used Allen Carr as well.

I made a huge effort to stop smoking. I was fed up to feel like **** (I was smoking 20 a day and 40 when going out)

It takes what...something like 10 to 15 years to fully recover. I just can t stand when I breath smoke from people who don t make any efforts.

    I admit I became extreme ...

It s not only in pubs it's annoying, it s also in the street !! When walking behind a smoker, if the wind is coming from the front, then it's for your lungs!

When playing pool with a friend (smoker) he was asking me to stop complaining about the smoke, arguing that 'a little bit' of smoke won t harm me. Well I don t care I don t want other people smoke.

The problem with this shiete is that you CAN NOT avoid it, there will always be someone poisoning your air.

Please, no parallel with car fumes :)) This is exactly the kind of poor argument I was giving when I was smoking.

In my opinion, lots of people smoke because other people smoke. Lots of people are just waiting for the ban to be active to stop. So this ban is a good thing.

No excuses like : oooh I will stop going to the pub then, and they ll lose money ...etc

People will just get used to it. Live with it.

We will be an example for the rest of Europe.

Why do some non-smokers feel they have to try to stop others smoking? As the only smoker in a group of friends I get really p***ed off when I'm constantly warned about the dangers, made fun of and criticised. What is it to anyone else if I smoke or not?

I'm not stupid, I know the dangers and I managed to give up successfully for 2 years without any difficulty. And then I decided to start again because as Dr Loon says, I like smoking.

It would be good if everyone could go by the live and let live philosophy. If we're not harming anyone (by being considerate and respectful of non-smokers) then leave us alone. I can guarantee we've heard everything you have to say before.
