Too many shops in the area perhaps ? Joyces Dunnes Aldi + a couple of locals, why the need for more.

Because there is none that size of town. This is part of the traffic issue. People on the western size must add to already congested roads and unnecessarily add to traffic

There's a Dunnes and Aldi in the exact area they wanted to build Lidl and Joyces is only a stones throw away. Do people love Lidl so much they'll drive across town to shop there?

There are certain items they only sell there that we need, I cant get across town to get them with work.

Thats one of the reasons I want one I can get to on the bus during the days, additional to the extra choice.

Plenty of small towns in the midlands that have all of those and each of them seems to be doing well enough to keep the lights on.

I think that was the reason for the objection, but you rational will cause more traffic to cross the river.

Is cactus Jack's definitely gone? Was my favourite restaurant in Galway and always seemed busy.

Have they moved location or gone gone??

It's been closed every time I've walked past for the last few weeks.

If they'd moved, I'd expect a sign in the window saying where to, and for the place to be cleared out. No sign. And some of their stuff is still inside (as at a few days ago, anyways). The facebook page has been removed, and the website only lists their Dublin location, no mention of Galway.

New restaurant opened up on Irwin Lane in the last month. It used to be a French café I think but is a Portuguese and Brazilian place now. We ate there last week and really enjoyed it, found it quite reasonably priced too.

It's listed on Google results now as "permanently closed" so it's a gonner. Went there a few weeks ago after not having been there in a good while. Place was busy as normal and grub was delish...

Would that be in the ground floor of the apartment building? I remember when it was built there was talk of a cinema going in and I thought it was repurposed as a car park or something (never been inside so going on old talk). If I was Omniplex I would stipulate the outside of the building needs a facelift so it doesn't look like a dilapidated dump.

Will be fantastic for Salthill assuming they don't cock it up.

Probably the corner unit at the junction joining pres road with Newcastle road,few houses away from.the primary school.. think.it was a Asian grocery before

After the cinema news from yesterday I made a point to cycle by Baily Point this morning. From what I could see the exterior still looks really patchy. I saw a small bit of scaffolding but nothing like you'd expect for a big job.

The whole place still looks as if it has scabies. Maybe they're slowly moving around that small bit of scaffolding to plaster first and then paint later? I couldn't quite make out if the patches are freshly plastered smooth or still hunks missing.

I know the basement cleared safely checks for the cinema, but a renter there tells me the place stinks when the tide is high, as to what they can do about the commonly held belief that there is pyrite in the mix, I dont know.

From another life of frequenting omni cinema's, this one is going to be expensive and I still cant see where they are going to put the cars that most ppl will drive there(as the buses from knocknacarra or outer salthill are non existent or patchy) I cant see where they will fit on a summer's or floody pm.

Yeah it's the old charity shop... photos on the Facebook page. Hope they do well but pretty challenging location for a vegan deli, good walk out of town and no real parking.

Would be good if they use the limited space at the front for a good bike rack, especially if they're targeting the vegan (and often climate aware) community.

Salthill is an easy walk from knocknacarra do it manys a day

Loads of parking- Seapoint, Baily Point, Salthill prom car park and I think there is a few underground spaces in Baily point ??

I wonder is the block in receivership still and being leased out and then sold on by receivers ?

It's a pity, there's very few bars around that area. The NUI bar would be closest if I'm not wrong? Only other one is The Sliding rock and after that you'd either be going to Salthill or the City Center.

The problem with both locations was the rough crowd were repeatedly allowed in even after regular bust ups.

Ended up with kips that not many wanted to go to

The plans for accommodation..... The location is terrible for that too. I'd be surprised if they are allowed to do a change of use

A tough gig for sure especially given its modest size. But apart from opening the doors, some of the previous sets of publicans didn't really seem to have any plan as to how to attract clientele.

Hear what you are saying about the demographics in the area but I would imagine there is easily enough of a catchment area for the a bar to do ok provided the offering is right.

I think it's real downfall is the location across from the hardstand and the perception that it gets a rough crowd as a result. This has never generally been the case.

Tom Sheridan's in Knocknacarra is doing very well and is badly needed. Not everybody wants to go all the way into town for a point.

Yeah, Clybaun is very much a brightly lit hotel bar. It doesn't feel like a cosy pub, which Sheridan's pulls off. Capone's extension is a lounge/bar which looks like a nice place to chill. Not sure if they would encourage groups who aren't eating but get some wings and it might be an alternative. Other than that you're into Salthill but in the evening there's no public transport options. It's not terribly far though, I often walk down and taxi back.

Yeah, waking them up as they roar past in the street.

Basic planning: put the shops, pubs etc in the centre and family housing on the edges. Avoid donuts.
