I've had my GTI for 2 months and have been tracking my fuel ups with Fuelly. I'm on track to do a little over 20,000km per year.

So far it's been averaging between 8.2 and 8.7L/100km fuel economy.

So at that rate, we're talking 1764L of fuel per year (I'm assuming 8.4L/100km as my average for the year, for 21,000km) which at 1.45 a litre ends up at €2558 per year in petrol.

If I take the GTD figures for my driving, assuming 45mpg quoted above (6.27L/100km), it works out at 1317 litres of diesel, which if we say is 1.38 a litre, you get €1817 per year.

So for 21,000km a year, you're talking a difference of €741 over the course of a year, or €61.75 a month. My fuel economy figures aren't great by GTI standards, I do a decent amount of driving in traffic and through town so depending on your circumstances you could probably get better.

My gut feeling is that the extra depreciation that seems to be on GTDs might make up for this, at least to a certain amount? Does anyone have any comparison figures around how well they're holding their value?

Lads sorry know this has come up a few times, best tyre for a mk 7.5gti running on 18's, is the consensus Michelin Pilot Sport 4 or 4S?
Need to order some. I've no interest in Goodyear.

I might be wrong on this but I don't think the PS4S comes in 18s. If they do though, the 4S is a better choice.

I could be wrong but I believe the 4S isn't as good in the wet as the regular 4.

PS4S are only available in 19”, PS4 are available in 18”. You could look at Continental PremiumContact 6 too. Very good in the wet IME.

Doesn't look like a whole lot between them, I'll price the local guy for both.

That’s one of the ways I’m trying to justify it. I think I could live with extra fuel costs up to maybe €1500/year but after that I’m not sure it’s worth it.

My 2c, if it's a GTi you want then go for it. Worst case scenario you can shift it on again if you find it's too hard on the pocket. If you can get one with a nice spec (PP DSG would be my pick) and low miles and keep it a year or two, even putting 35-70k on it you won't lose out massively and you won't have to listen to diesel clatter every time you start it.

Totally agree. I was humming and hawing and just went for the GTI with that mindset. If it becomes too hard on the pocket I can shift it on and go for something more sensible.

2 months in I don't think that'll be happening because it's too much fun, but it's always an option.

PS4 will be a bit more expensive per corner (~€15-€20). That’s the kind of price difference online anyway, a local bricks and mortar shop may differ.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,036 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

130 per corner fitted in a local place for the Michelin. Somone mentioned Uniroyal rainsport 3's as well, be a bit cheaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,902 ✭✭✭hooch-85

130 for Michelins is quite good. I paid 110 for Hankooks and was quoted 150+ for the Michelins

PS4 in 18” for the GTi are €104 or €108 on tyreleader now depending on speed rating with free delivery. Depending on fitting costs the €130 a corner isn’t a bad price.
    The PC6 then are €98.28 a corner.

I got 4 eagle f1 assys 5s in the garage waiting to go on.
    375e delivered from tryeleader.

That's not a bad price, that's how much they were online for 17" when I was buying.

I'm actually shocked how much of a difference I noticed with the PS4s purely in city driving. Wheelspin has completely been eradicated and it feels way more planted.

I know this will vary depending on driving experience and location, but how much is everyone paying for insurance?

I've got a 142 manual GTI PP. I'm in Dublin 18, 10+ years licence and NCB, no points (somehow) or claims. I paid €730 with 123 last year which I felt was a lot, although this includes full no claims protection. They seem to have fúcked up something on their side and aren't sending me a renewal quote, but I have a quote from Aviva with full no claims protection for about €580ish so am thinking I'll just go with that. Wondering if many people are doing better than that?

Mine is a 162 PP. I'm paying just under a grand. 3 years NCB in my own name, 9 before that named, clean full license. You're doing well with 580 I reckon.

750-ish for 162 Golf R with a similar "risk" profile and benefits to yourself Royal (One Direct). So I'd say youre doing well with 580. As you probably know though, you need to factor in things like location, alarm, immobiliser, second driver. All can effect the premium. There are too many variables to do a like for like comparison with anyone/anything, but some quotes I get are definitely harder to fathom in terms of min to max. Its all about Risk appetite and reward for these companies, I guess.

I collected my GTI PP Dsg on Tuesday .. build completed on May 17th, arrived at the dealer a week later which is pretty quick!

Have any of you had a dashcam fitted? I'd like one with 'parked mode', so will need to be hard wired. Any experience of Halfords fitting service? And any recommendations? This one has caught my eye today ...

Recommendation for who to go to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

I'm not usually a Halfords basher, but no way I'd let them hardwire anything into a brand new car. Too much at stake all round.

If you're in Dubin, I.C.E.in Ranelagh do very good work and don't cost the earth.

Can getting a dash cam hard-wired affect warranty?

Technically, yes. In reality, common sense usually applies.

Getting the work done by a reputable installer and keeping the receipt should see you covered by them, if not VW, if a quality issue should crop up.

Thanks for the warning!! I'm in Waterford so I'll try find someone reputable.. or else take a spin to Dublin.

Am I being silly here or would you not just wire it yourself? The parts needed are cheap as chips and it's an easy enough job. Route the cable down the a pillar and use a piggy back fuse?

I've been looking at new dashcams to replace my cheap Chinese one and the new Nextbase *22 models released recently look very good for the money if you're not going to spend Blackvue money. They have a parking mode too.
