Buy a spare key

I bought a second hand car with a single key and want to get a spare

Any advise on where to get it?
Anything I need to be aware of before purchase?
Ball Park price?

The more uncommon the key the higher the risk it'll be expensive.

One of the most well-known companies is www.autokey.ie/smart-roadster/
Another option is to buy a key and program it yourself. Special software required.
Start by checking with local locksmiths and autokey for quotes. It may not be as expensive as you think.

Got a key cut and programmed last week by a local guy, €120. For a T4 vw transporter.

Edit nearest vw garage was doin it for around €90 but I'd have to bring the van to them, which wasn't feasible as it's 45 miles away and I'd have to truck it there as I lost the only key.

I wouldn't mind getting a ballpark price for a copy to be made for a 2011 Avensis which I bought recently and only came with the one. Be a small while yet probably before I get buy one as the cost of car, a few tyres and motor tax in the past few weeks plus a few other bits going on.

keepalive213, €120 wasn't too bad for the Transporter in fairness. I thought they would be much more expensive.

Would be good to hear back from the OP if/ when they get a new key sorted. All too often these threads aren't concluded with a price provided by the OP once the initial question is asked.

It's worth noting that Smart are owned by Mercedes Benz so they may use a similar key security system. Try a few good locksmiths first to see if they can duplicate a spare key similar to doing it for a Mercedes Benz. Other than that you may be forced to go to a Mercedes dealer.

most places can cut the key its programming the immobilizer thats expensive part.

Also to note make sure the company has a locksmith PSA licence. A lot of locksmiths don’t and you need one to cut car keys.

I have a machine, and can cut car keys... but I'm not a locksmith, and I don't have a 'psa licence'.... !!

I see some expensive prices here. I get keys supplied cut and programmed when I'm over in the UK and pay £28 a key.

As from January 2017 you need a PSA license. You don’t need to be a locksmith to cut car keys but you have to have the license to cut them from the PSA.

Only if I'm offering a service for the cutting of keys, which I'm not. But I still have a machine, and can still cut keys. In fact, I cut one for my own car only a few days ago, far cheaper than going to a 'locksmith'.

Honda insight if have thought as a jap import would have been fairly difficult as when I had to call the insurance company after losing the original ( temporary thank God) was informed that car need to be towed and I'd be lucky to get a key within 10 days ,found it but made sure i sorted a replacement ASAP

A JDM should be easy as they don't have factory immobilisers so it should be a simple cut, it's programming the transponder that's the difficult bit.

if it's just the blade, it shouldn't need the immoboliser reprogrammed. The chip is normally in the fob part of the key.

I contacted autokey who said they can't quote me without seeing the original key

I filled out and submitted web forms on 3 different locksmith sites. Each claim to specialise in car keys but I did not get any responces

Just posting this to update as people were good enough to advise. I will go to autokey and update when I do

These guys supplied a flip key for a car I bought. Think it was @€;60.

Trago Mills near Liskeard in Cornwall. They take the key read the chip and then program a new one which they stick in a new key that they cut. Don't know all the cars they can do but have had older VW and Ford keys done no problem. They have other branches but I think the key cutting is a shop within a shop not really sure so can't say if all the branches can provide the service trago.co.uk
