Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Where were you getting your forecast? We were in Dun Laoghaire Sunday and were getting forecasts of 20 knots of the Windy app on Saturday which was accurate. Therese seems to be huge variations in some of these apps and sites now over what the weather is going to do

    I was using Windy, as well as Passageweather.com

    The forecast for Sunday morning was to be less than 10, and it was about 12-14.

    Then in the afternoon I was seeing about 15-20 which was slightly more accurate.

    Its one of the Checkmates theres two in Howth. Thats the blue one the other one is the latest Checkmate formerly known as Dick Dasterdly .

    Crazy stuff, makes you appreciate that anything can happen, even on a lake (admittedly a large one). At 5:50 you can see a boat further back sent flares up.

    I never even noticed the flare the first 2 times I watched it!

    Incredible to note the speed changes throughout;
    At first moving quite nicely with the kite up, then they drop it and slow down quite a bit, then gradually speed up to almost insane speeds as the squall hits, great call dropping the kite when they did, giving them time to set up for the squall.

    Then as more and more waves/water came over the coachroof, you see them all inching further and further aft!!


    This sort of stuff has always happened, but what's great is that in this day and age, more and more folk are strapping action cameras to boats, so we can all see the events unfold.

    Biggest and fatal mistake there was leaving the vang on, that kept the main fully powered and resulted in the dismasting. I watched it all through the clip and not once was it adjusted. You could see the boom bending from the amount of force just before the end.

    Have been in that situation plenty of times, you have got to have crew on the vang.

    There has been very unusual weather in Europe over the last couple of weeks. A storm (Miguel) claimed the lives of three lifeboat crew (4 managed to get ashore) – their boat was damaged and capsized when they were out in 120 km/h winds trying to rescue a fisherman (now presumed dead) at the Sables d’Olonne. The same weekend weather closed Roland Garros and the FIFA village at the Women's World Cup, together with public parks and gardens in Paris. At the same time in Germany (10 June Munich area) the storm brought rainfall of 10mm in just 9 minutes, while winds reached 118 km/h and brought hail stones of golf and tennis ball sizes. More than 125,000 cars were damaged. In total the Munich hail storm has led to 250,000 insurance claims amounting to EUR650 million of industry losses. A few more masts in Switzerland won’t make much difference!

    Agreed - the skipper did not appear to either have the main sheet down the track to close the slot or even have eased the sheet to spill wind.

    Picked the right day anyway this weekend (this month/summer!?) to head over to Dun Laoghaire...


    Eventful also in the marina just before we boarded to leave when a 32 footer was towed in with no engine, and I was the closest one walking to the berth they were flying towards, so had to run out and try to act as a brake and help them in!!

    Saw it coming back around to Dublin Bay later in the day when we were heading north,

    The side by side masts & the junk rig styled wing sails looked quite bizarre when it was heading towards us on a down wind run!! Not my cup of tea at all.

    Used to see a lot of junk-rigged cats living in British Columbia, never seen any here though. They have their uses, but oh how ugly they are.
