It does. Can see some elements of Crysis and Bulletstorm in there too. Which wouldn't be a bad thing.

I was definitely buying this anyway, but with Danny Dyer as a voice option, I'm definitely buying it. Danny Dyer is like marmite, you either love him or hate him, and I love him. Pure geezer, and that trailer with his VO is amazing!

I'm alright with road maps in actual live service games, but in strictly single player experiences I'm not so keen.

Expansions are fine, but this drip feed of skins here and there and vehicles isn't much use to me for the most part when the majority of them won't arrive until I'm long done with the main campaign.

I appreciate that road map. Means I don't have to buy the Season Pass until August, and I'll surely know by then if it'll be worth it.

Not sure I follow. Even had I not known the exact month the proper expansions were releasing, I still wouldn't have bought the season pass till I'd finished the game and decided if I want more. You still would have had that time to decide anyway regardless of whether it's all laid out neatly on a road map.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,282 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

It's more that it gives me ample time to try it, and I'll know by August if I want the Season Pass. It also seems like they will be properly supporting it for a while afterwards, whereas a lot of Season Passes these days say 'Future DLC' but don't detail it. Bethesda are on the right track detailing exactly what it'll involve. Granted, some may say they are bits that could have been taken from the main game, but I don't think that's the case with this. Open to correction though!

I'm with you now, fair point.

Yeah I agree, from what I've seen it doesn't seem like content was stripped from the main game, the game looks substantial enough from the previews I've watched and read.

Looking forward to getting stuck in on Tuesday, I had intended on playing the first game through again this weekend but I really want to finish Days Gone before Rage 2, as I suspect once I drop Days Gone for Rage I won't bother going back to it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,282 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Yeah, I haven't picked up Days Gone because there are other games coming out that I prefer. I'll pick it up eventually, if only to see if it deserved to knock God of War off the sales charts for first week sales. *shakes fist*

Reviews looking to be just about where I expected them to be.

Still really excited for this, the gunplay looks fantastic. It's just a shame the open world seems to fall flat yet again, as the world being somewhat lifeless was the biggest flaw first time round. I was sort of expecting it given the Avalanche involvement; their open world never really feel fully alive, they are more a backdrop for the craziness the player can conjure up via the loopy physics and gadgets they put in the hands of players.

Lots of reviews will be late as Bethesda gave out review code very late as they always do.

Fun combat and gunplay with a short open world is what I would have been looking for from this, so sounds good. Too many big open world games which just use 'big' as a positive. Not expecting a masterpiece or anything but the combat and vehicles getting high praise is a big plus. The 'lifeless' open world can vary in liking for some though definitely, I personally like the more desolate atmosphere in a lot of these games.

ACG says it's a buy which is enough for me. Though I am worried with how short some outlets are saying it is. I don't like a game dragging on, but by the same time this sounds like it's perhaps worryingly short.

    What's Short? As in hours

    What's Short? As in hours

Sounds like the main quest clocks in at around 6 - 7 hours, which if so, is very short IMO. Sure there is side content etc, but the majority of it sounds like filler, and if an open world game is on the short side I like to have substantial side quests to pad things out, not just busywork (though I've no doubt the busywork here will be a blast due to the combat).

  • Registered Users Posts: 709 ✭✭✭goon_magee

One of the articles I was reading (can't remember which), said their playthrough was 10 hours, that included finding every weapon and ability in the game. Weapons and abilities are scattered around the map, you've to go outta your way to go looking for them so it sounds like even with a good bit of digging around off the critical path still leaves things fairly short.

I'm still very much looking forward to it, the game looks great, it's just a pity it's not a bit more substantial by the sounds of things.

  • I'm ok with that. I completed rage 1 a few times on highest difficulty

    I'll do the same here

Short games are a win also, I'm delighted tbh. Avalanche are known for adding annoying filler.

This sounds like it's more iD than Avalanche

  • Registered Users Posts: 709 ✭✭✭goon_magee

Aye, I'm sure it'll be a good playthrough.

Short games are a win if done right, the complaints here seem to be that it's not done right though. Sounds very light on content, 10 story missions with the story ending just as it gets going. Sounds unfinished to be honest and more like a wait for a sale the more I read.

Nor too interested in thus but applaud the Devs on making an open world game that sounds like it doesn't outstay it's welcome.

If there is only 10 missions what is the point of the open world?
Just do what Dishonored or the New Wolfenstein are doing with large open levels. Glad I waited for the reviews.

I think that approach would maybe work a lot better. The gamesradar review said something similar, along the lines of the campaign feeling like it would be more suited to a more structured approach.

You don't even visit two of the main regions in the game as part of the campaign. Makes me wonder if the roadmap actually was cut content given how sparse content seems to be at launch. It's strange how a roadmap is continuously lambasted when it's tied to an online live service game like the Division or Anthem, but when a single player game launches in what sounds like an incomplete state the roadmap garners relatively little attention.

I've not played the game, so I'm speculating of course. I'll probably still grab it, blast through what is there and flog it in CEX once done.

Not liking the sound of it being that short, but, if it is short it just means i'll get Days Gone for €20 in a week or so.

  • Registered Users Posts: 709 ✭✭✭goon_magee

Played a couple of hours this eve. Seems good, combat feels great but the open world is definitely lacking.very empty, and not in a desolate but believable way, more it just feels flat and artificial as Avalanche open world's tend to feel. Definitely excited to play more though as the gameplay is on point.

I have to call out the upgrade system, it is unnecessarily convoluted. I'm sure it'll make more sense with a bit more time invested, but it's a bit overwhelming when you first jump in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,282 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Yeah, as above, only a few hours in. THe story, if you can call it that, is just there to tie in all the locations I'd imagine. Even the main character references it (imo) with a line like 'Tell me where to go and what to kill' - 'You catch on quick'. Although, it's still very early days, the story may get better.

Weapons and abilities, again as above seems a bit convoluted. You can unlock perks, and each perk can then be upgraded. But it doesn't tell you everything about it, so I figured out that you can only upgrade each level of a weapon once, and depending the perk you pick for that level, you will lock out the other options. No idea if you can change this down the line, and not sure if it also works that way with the ability perks. Early days. Could also just be information overload at this point though.

It's violent, like super violent. Loved how you picked your character and what happens immediately afterwards, especially if you have a good look and you get the comment. One of the main characters is a hoot, lovely language. Haven't met Danny Dyer yet, but can't recall if he's an NPC, a playable voice over for your character, or he was just in it for the marketing. If his voice over is an option for my character, it could warrant another playthrough.

Oh, and no sound or music in the menus. Even spending points on abilities/unlocks doesn't make a sound. I've come to expect some sort of bar filling sound, but nothing until it's unlocked. They need to add some nice BGM to the menus. But the audio in game, so far, is good. Playing around on the sewer mission for one of the contacts, and the bgm was heavy and meaty and gave a sense of urgency. But it doesn't play with the game. A few times, the bgm would make a loud sound and from other games I expect it to mean that there's an enemy nearby, but there isn't.

So far, I am really enjoying it, and I'm taking my time. The map is already getting a bit busy, but again I think it's information overload at this point. Also, it's gas that each mission has a difficulty indicator, but I've no idea what level I am. Can't find it.

Definitely a fun game. My map is also littered with icons as well, and I also have yet to make sense of the difficulty indicators. Done a level 3 roadblock last night and breezed through it, so went and attempted a nearby level 3 bandit den....completely different story which ended in me dying on all three attempts and calling it a night.

Looking forward to getting stuck in properly at the weekend, hopefully make some sense of all the systems at play and get some more abilities unlocked. I only have dash and shatter at the moment. I don't see using shatter to send an enemy over a cliff edge in a mess of blood and guts ever getting old :pac:

I actually don't mind the vehicle handling (for the default vehicle at least) neither. I thought I would hate it and reviews have called it out consistently, however I enjoyed the sense of weight behind the vehicles and didn't have any issues with it.

10 hours does seem short but then I think back to Fallout which, if you stict strictly to only story related missions, can be finished in a similar time...but no-one does that! Of course, not sure how rich or deep the world is outside the main narrative.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,282 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

I think that's the main complaint, there isn't much to do outside of the main missions, as anything worth doing you will have already done to get upgrades. World does seem empty, but if you look at it from the games lore, you'd be crazy to be out in the wildlands in this type of game, so they'll probably use that as an excuse.

    combat shotgun is great craic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,282 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Very quiet in here, thought there would be more playing and talking about this.

It's a solid shooter, no denying that. I'd imagine it will be most fun near the end once you're superpowered. Couple of more hours played last night, nothing new to add, didn't really unlock anything fancy. Still a bit disappointed about upgrading the guns where you can only select 1 upgrade per level. Nowhere explaining that, and I'm stuck with a shotgun with extra rounds but still slow ass reloading, would have preferred the quicker reloading had I known before upgrading.

I'll definitely finish this, but at this moment I can't see myself holding onto it. It's fun, zany, loud, explosive, but does appear empty outside of the towns. May pick it up again down the line, but most likely will trade in once I'm finished. Saying that, I haven't really had a good few hours at it, so i've tomorrow off work to play it and can make a better decision then.

But it is most definitely fun.
