The media reaction is ridiculous to put, to put it mildly and it's to just the UK media, the US media goes into Disney Princess mode too.

Also, while Northern Ireland's part of the UK Irish people have every right to comment on the UK monarchy. The Queen is head of state in the six counties.

I heard they are calling the baby Dodi

Well, I'm not insecure as much as relieved, but the rest is dead-on, in fairness.

In all seriousness, I don't care about the royals, such as they are. This thread is about the media overreaction. There was a woman on TV this morning pledging love and allegiance to this baby. That's hysterical, in my view.

Why are you concerned over what a woman has to say on UK morning tv?

boredom, bemusement, probably other nouns beginning with the letter B.

Serious media outlets are giving over a great deal of attention to this. Our neighbour and good friend has lost its marbles. I think its worthy of a mention.

As opposed to Ireland that is a serious mature country?

Em, remember the time Garth Brooks was meant to play in Croke Park?

It must be an utterly wretched life. You couldn't pay me enough to endure a week of it. Feel sorry for the poor gal.

I've no interest in this stuff but ,believe me, some people seem to have inordinate amounts of interest. Hopped on the train a few months back, 2 and half hours before me to the city. A lovely petite glamorous elderly lady sat in beside me. For the entire journey she proceeded to regale me in microscopic detail about Meghan's handbags. Just. Her. Handbags. Oh yes.

quite a big difference between bestowing iconic status on a monarch, and kicking up a fuss about suburban planning permission, albeit involving a musician with a minor cult following. We didn't make him our queen.

Anyway, this isn't a competition. Most Brits and most Irish people are fairly rational people.

It's the British press, in particular, that has worked itself into a frenzy. I wonder if someone should stage an intervention.

I've been listening to UK radio this afternoon and the commentary is becoming more and more outlandish. Someone on LBC has been arguing that the slight delay in telling the British public about the birth has raised questions about the suitability if Meghan Markle to be their Princess.

The Prince's wife has been delivered of a son, and the Brit media has lost its sh!t.

Watching the UK media, a Martian would be forgiven for believing that Christ has just been born to the world's richest welfare beneficiaries.

Is this bizarre carnival of Royal procreation proof-positive that we were right to object to 800 years of colonisation by such a strange nation?

Do you care about this story? Do you think it's all just celeb-mag trash? Or are you one of the people waving union flags and speculating on baby names (my money is on calling him Brexit)

As we live in a republic I am curious as to what Prince that would be now?

Prince Harry, posh ginger lad off the telly. Glad to clarify.

    You seem a little obsessed.

I couldn't care less. I would wish them all the best as I would any new parents.

It's just an easy story for the lazy media.

"Do we write about the impending ecological disaster facing the world or just another fawning puff piece about the British Royal family complete with supplement. Let's go with the puff piece. Easy work."

Hmm, I just answered your question. The very point of the thread is the absurdity of the obsession.

I think it's reasonable to comment when the media we consume loses its collective sh1t. Its seems somewhat noteworthy.

I suppose the British media is happy to report on ANYTHING as long as it's not Brexit. A lot of the reporters sigh when that subjects mentioned. I even saw a link on Sky News which was "And after the more on Brexit, if you can bear it..."

The funny thing about all this is that in 20 years nobody will really care about this child, he'll be viewed the same way we view Princess Beatrice, which is the eldest Child of the Brother to the Heir to the Throne.

Gees, I'd hope his parents and family and friends would care about him...

By 'nobody' I meant the general public/media. All the attention will be on George, Charlotte and Louis.

The only thing worse than Daily Mail fawning over the Royals are Irish people telling the whole world what they really think about the Royals.

Who really cares? There are 12 European Royal families you know, do you waste time on the rest of them? No, why? Because you really just an insecure Brit-hating Irishman.

Ah we do though, we just don't encounter the other 'royals' very much. The Dutch had their national monarchy celebration day recently enough and I discussed it with my Dutch friends. It's such a bizarre institution for the modern world, basically just rooted in celebrity at this stage. Which makes it all the stranger when otherwise intelligent people defend it

As well as this - Allison Pearson : Baby Sussex has made world a better place already - if you take The Telegraph, I think this lovely birth might start to heal the feud between Meghan and Kate. A newborn can have that kind of effect on people.

Since the time of Queen Victoria its been celebrity. Prior to that they were not well known to the public.

Queen Victoria is credited with modern brides wearing white, she wore it for her wedding so that she could be easily seen by the crowds.

The King that abdicated was a massive celebrity too, he was as popular as Princess Di.

Petty cool stroke of luck to be family on the throne when all the wars and internal successions stopped. They draw in a huge amount of revenue for the UK so sure whatever, not really relevant to this spud picker no more than the Dutch/Swedish/whoever. Actually used to live in The Netherlands so scrap that got royally pissed on King's Day.

First they came for the socialists...

Why do the Irish always get so caught up with all the British news stories. Ignore it.

They don't give a flying fck about anything happening in Ireland.
