A Royal has given birth

The Prince's wife has been delivered of a son, and the Brit media has lost its sh!t.

Watching the UK media, a Martian would be forgiven for believing that Christ has just been born to the world's richest welfare beneficiaries.

Is this bizarre carnival of Royal procreation proof-positive that we were right to object to 800 years of colonisation by such a strange nation?

Do you care about this story? Do you think it's all just celeb-mag trash? Or are you one of the people waving union flags and speculating on baby names (my money is on calling him Brexit)

I missed the news yesterday. Didn't even get a text from Meghan, selfish b*tch.

Yesterday, the UN announced that a million species are at risk because of human intrusion on their natural habitat.
This morning, the Daily Mail has published a 23 page special supplement on the birth of the Harry and Meghan's baby with no photos of the baby, no name announced, or no photo of Meghan.

    We. are. f*cked.

I'd like to think there might be some sort of happy medium between Union Jack body-paint and spitting on the Sassenach Divil-Babby. Nice to see the young royals up the road doing well, more luck to them.

I could just as easily reply "and you felt it was important enough to reply to this thread?", but you and I both know that the real spectacle here is the exaggerated media reaction. Vanessa Feltz has just been on TV pledging her love to the royal baba.

Its the reaction to the birth that astounds me, as for the couple themselves I would wish them the same luck as any other young parents.

But the hysteria is something to behold.

A British public that has been absolutely beleaguered by Brexit for two years finally gets some good news. Can we not just let them celebrate?

The whole royal thing is a farce and a joke . Why would we care beyond a 30 second flash on the news.
Our media has lost the run of itself with this stuff for that last few years.

British people fawning over the Royals is embarrassing enough, Irish people doing it is unspeakably cringey.

That said, the popularity of celebrity culture proves a common human impulse to obsess over perceived social superiors. As a national symbol of celebrity obsession for the morons of their society to rally around the British Royal Family do a good job. I'm glad to live in a Republic but I'll give credit to the Windsors for their enduring success in their field; rebranding successfully from Saxe Coburg and Gotha, shaking off Nazi sympathiser scandals, maintaining relevance into the modern celebrity age. Many of them approach their role with a respectable sense of duty too, it's difficult to imagine a Kardashian piloting hazardous air sea rescue missions as Prince William does for example.

Vanessa Feltz isn't fat. Mental, perhaps. Shameless royalist, certainly. But not fat. We've all done worse.

She used to be but as I don't pay her any attention I wasn't aware that she may have since lost some weight.

And he earned all of that. Had he been born on a council estate in Sheffield, he'd have risen to the same professional rank.

Such is the level of myopia required in a 21st century monarchy.

The only thing he would have earned is the rank of Squadron Leader, but it is debatable whether some ASBO-in-the-making from Oop North would have attained similar, certainly. :pac:

I wonder how many Squadron leaders were born on council estates, or any other men in senior officer ranks.

Despite having started this thread, I actually take no real interest in the royals, but I seem to remember that the Dad of this new baby is no great academic bright-light, but maybe he's a gifted military strategist whose rank is merely incidental to his social standing.

There's a big difference between the media and the general public. There's definitely a hardcore of "royal watchers" though who are something like a cross between diehard fans and train spotters.

Most people I know in England are fairly cynical about the royals. It's far from absolute unwaivering respect. However the institution seems to keep stumbling on with largely totally unquestioned huge public funding.

They also probably know it's in their career interests to keep providing a soap opera to the tabloids. If the get too boring they might end up being reduced to the figure head level of the Belgian royals.

It's a bizarre institution when you think about it though in the context of what's simultaneously a modern democracy (as long as you don't look too hard at the House of Lords)
