Yeah I'd agree with that. 10 mins barefoot, atg squat is a good mobility test. Once you have the mobility though. I think it's fine to elevate the heel for lifts. Oly lifter don't wear them for lack of mobility.
But I won't be worrying about oly lifts for a while.

Once I figure out how to train around it, I'll stay sane. I'll get a good physio while I'm on the waiting list.

Was in the gym (weights gym, not BJJ) the other week. Warming up with some pistol squats. At the bottom of a rep by knee "clicked". I bailed immediately but wasn't able to fully straighten my knee. Kept waiting for to “unlock” like a dead arm would. But didn’t happen and I knew that meant torn meniscus. MRI confirm it’s a bucket handle tear, and ortho recommends surgery. It wasn’t a heavy load or anything out of the ordinary. Knee had been sore lately, so thinking there was damage here and this was completion of an existing partial tear.

Unbelievable gutted atm. The time/cost of surgery is a balls obviosuly, but I’m mostly depressed about not being able to train now and the future being in doubt. Injury aside, I've had a few other issues going, and was using jiu jitsu as a way to get my mind off it - and training had been going great. So feels like a double blow.

So sorry to hear this, i know exactly how it feels, being off for 4 months last year was the worst 4 months ever, how the wife didn't kick me out of the house i'll never know, patience of a saint she has.

At the moment, i'm having a couple of other issues(minor back pain, and a touch of psoriasis making a return) which is going to limit my training, and i know exactly what you mean about jiu jitsu taking your mind off issues.

Hopefully you're not on the waiting list too long, and the recovery is nice and quick.

I have probably torn my meniscus too, physio reckons it's done but haven't had the MRI or specialist opinion.

If it is torn, its a partial or full knee as I had the ACL done and this was always on the cards, albeit down the line. Ironically it wasn't jits, I started to do some S&C and was working well but I was doing low goblet squats and split squats and I think that done the damage. Gutted but I am still training fo the time being, although it hurts like a MF!

Ireland has a new world champion.

Aaron Rilley of Beyond Jiu Jitsu Academy in Balbriggin won gold in the bluebelt in his weight class in the Para section of the Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu Jitsu championships in the Mubadala Arena, Abu Dhabi.
amazing achievement for an exceptional young man.
Survived a stroke and became a world champion within the space of a year!

That's class. Adu Dhabi fields are tough.
Hopefully he picked up some prize money

One month in, about 25 classes or thereabouts. I don't think I've ever felt so helplessly bad at something after an entire month. The only tiny sliver of hope I have left is that I managed to get my first sub in a roll already. Other than that it seems like my life is now eat, sleep, get smashed, repeat.

Could anyone recommend a good BJJ/Judo gym for a complete beginner?

Im working in Sandyford and living in Tallaght. So anywhere between the two would suit fine.

    Cheers

Hot on the heels of Dublin's Aaron Rilley, Ireland has another World Champion.

Athlone's Joey Cummins, who currently trains at Essential Jiu-Jitsu in New York (where he lives with his mum, dad and brothers) has just won the Grey/White Belt division in the gi in his age/weight class at the NAGA World Championships in New Jersey.
He also finished 2nd in the no-Gi division in his age/weight class.

His younger brother Michael also came 3rd in the no-Gi division in his age/weight class.

Not bad for two youngfellas from the midlands who haven't even had their 10th birthdays.

I'd recomend SBG D24 over Tallaght in terms of coaches on staff tbh.

Nope. They're down the road from eachother.

D24 is Paddy Hoolahan's gym, tallaght is JK and another lad.

Oh right. Never realized that. Why open two gyms so close together?

Think there's a Gracie Barra gym in Sandyford as well. And probably a few more between there and SBG D24

4-5 times a week with the occasional two classes on some days. In fairness there's like 50+ classes a month in the gym.

    Working in Sandyford?

Gracie Barra Dublin (now based at Corrig Road, Sandyford) have morning classes and lunchtime classes so you can go before work or pop out for lunch.

    Obviously also have evening classes.

    Great place!

So the pain in my lower back for the last year or so, turns out to be a herniated disc, been advised to go for surgery on it to get it sorted.

I'm not so sure, had my chiropractor look at the MRI, and she has said she doesn't think i need it, if i can manage the pain....i'm also going to see a physio to see if i can get something done that way to improve it.

Anyone else have a discectomy and return to training?

    there's always something lads...always something! :(

Was advised to get the op on my neck for two herniated discs, decided I'd put it off until I was too old to train. Took my recovery easy and protected my neck a lot for a few years.

Thats about 5 years ago I'd say, its still not great but its definitely bearable and I still train hard.

The only advice I'd give you is stay away from chiropractors with a disc injury and get the best bed and pillows possible.

Bit of advice lads. I have a son who I just signed up to jiu jitsu. He's only four years old, five at the end of this month.

He's been going for maybe a month and a half or so, classes are twice a week. He's getting on fine but the only issue I find is that they've started to do some rolling and he either doesn't get what's happening or is just not into it. If another kid gets any type of grip he will just flop to his back, almost like he still thinks it's a drill they're doing. Sometimes he might even run away for a second :pac: He never cries and keeps going until the end but I'm trying not to get frustrated with it. He's a bit of a nerdy kid and not as "physical" as others so just trying to think what's the best way to help him.

I have mats at home and I roll with him and show him some moves and he likes it but he's always laughing(which is great) but I'm not sure he sees the competitive aspect to it and how he should be fighting back etc..

    Any advice?

So you're taking a chiropractors advice over a doctors...? I'd start saving for the wheelchair now.

Of course not, if it comes to it and i "need" to get it i will, but i'm just looking at as many options as possible.

I guess i shouldn't have asked for advice here if all i'm going to get is a smart remark like "start saving for a wheelchair now"

Apologies but I felt it needed the dramatic response. You may as well have shown your dentist the MRI. A chiropractor has no business offering advise on an MRI.

They've no training in that area or any area in relation to medical advice.

By all means get a second or even third medical opinion on it but don't entertain the opinion of your chiropractor.
