Someone mentioned earlier all the personal trainers that are at it now using Inst agam and other social media. Ironic thing is they are all trying to promote themselves as different. Many of them have a 'story' as to why they now do personal training and it often seems to focus around insecurities, eating disorders or mental health issues. Having lived the nightmare is not always the best route to helping others.

+1 And a lot of these fitness folk weighing in on mental health are laypeople on the topic of mental health. They know as little about the subject as anyone else not working in the field. I feel like a lot of them are latching on to it to give themselves a, shudder, USP but firstly, it’s not unique anymore and secondly, are they qualified to weigh in on the subject?

My housemate always asks me if I want to do stuff and then he spends all his time looking at his phone. Annoys me. Asks to go for pints and I end up staring into the abyss because he's just browsing twitter on his phone.

This happens too much, heads glued to their phone. I'd probably be the same if my eyesight was good enough to focus on a small screen for any length of time.

That's one thing I love about going out with my mates, never have to deal with that ****, the phones don't come out at all.

I follow your man Brian Keane a fitness fella who does endurance races etc and has a podcast and fit him fascinating. For a fella who talks about positive mindsets he seems to be awful negative.talks about cutting negative people out of your life etc and evaluating your life constantly. It's like psychopathic behaviour where your happiness is the only ultimate goal is being justified.

I think people need that. You need to disconnect from the phone and have face to face time with people.

Cut people off once they cease to entertain/benefit you. That kind of outlook is the opposite to loyalty to friends. Makes it hard for people to rely on their network of friends to get them through a bad spot when nobody wants their n'negativity'. Could there be a bit of a culture of false positivity for the sake of fitting in?

My Instagram feed is about 60% sharks. When I joined it was asking about my interests, said do I like sharks, sure who doesn't says I. It wasn't my #goal to have quite so many shark things but it's actually great. Now when I look at it in the morning there's a pretty good chance first thing I'll see is a great white and an all caps caption "NEVER LOOK BACK! AND FOLLOW YOUR SHARK!!!" which sets me right up for the day.

Your Instagram feed is what you make it is my point, I guess.

I love the sharks, especially those Greenland sharks which are alive since the 1600's

That's it exactly.it's encouraging fickle behaviour. What's also the point of being successful if you've no one to share it with? Some of the funniest most engaging people I'm friends with would probably be regarded as losers by these Insta types.

    Its all a facade.

    Social media is very damaging.

But the internet in general is very damaging when you look at how people like to use it for negative ends.

Look at the comments section of thejournal.ie for example.

Look at kids killing themselves over online bullying.

Look at adults who have been found to be trolling other adults on twitter etc.

This newfound ability to project an imaginary persona while using the anonymity of it to say what you like with no consequence is allowing the dark side of peoples natures to come to the forefront.

Even the way people post on boards.ie - there are many posts here that if the person was asked to say those kinds of things in real life they would lose their jobs, their friends and be ashamed of themselves.

But they post awful things here (and online generally) hidden, anonymous, and with no consequence. Some of this behaviour is expressly to provoke a reaction, to rile people up, to upset people. Thats pretty worrying. I dont understand the motivation for that. But more worrying is that some of this behaviour is really the true face of whoever posts it, and they are not posting it to get a reaction, but rather to express their true thoughts.

I firmly believe, and I have posted this here before, that many many utterly hateful people walk among us pretending to be nice.

    He talks absolute rubbish!

I used to always see his advert on about "GAA lean body programme" or some ****. He had a pixelated picture of him in a galway jersey from about 10 years ago and had him running around a pitch on his own soloing a ball and kicking it over the bar from 20 yards.

Absolute spoofers. They all have these over exaggerated hand movements then. Same with Lipsett. I think it's to draw attention to the biceps.

No, I think that's how youtube says you're supposed to speak..it's very expressive..makes you look like you know what you're talking about..

Kind of topical this article. Maybe the tide is turning or is this article trying to be trendy and be one of the first to say it.
