Agreed ,up to the start of this season I thought the final villain would be the Night King but as soon as this 3rd episode was billed as the big battle for Winterfell it was pretty obvious that the Night King was going to be taken out to leave the last 3 episodes deal with the battle for the Iron throne.

Cersei is a 1 dimensional character I never liked and frankly has lasted about 5 series too many.

Cersei is the best character left in the show.

A lot of people, as usual with these things, are criticising it because it’s not what they expected, rather than what it was. Like while I get the disappointment that can bring, it’s kinda like saying a 4-4 football match was poor because you expected two good defences: the nit your picking is with your expectations not being met, nothing to do with the quality or lack thereof of the content itself. And that’s a total fallacy if you’re going to come on here and stake your word on this being a ‘bad’ episode, though I also acknowledge the feelings can be real sometimes. I give myself an adjustment period to process, and let go of my own hopes so I can judge it on its own merits, whenever something like this happens before I start typing.

The expectations are set by the standard of the show up to now. I haven’t seen anyone criticising it against other shows, it’s criticised on the quality it has already produced and based on the previous episode allowing us all to have one last look at all our favourite characters before they kill half of them off. Which they didn’t.

Your analogy to a football match is a fun one though. Let me turn it around and give the example that you went to see a football match between Barcelona and Real Madrid expecting the worlds best players going toe to toe and instead you had a floodlight failure and the referee scoring the winner.

Its an extreme extension of what people are complaining about. Jon taking on and surviving 100+ undead around him is idiotic at the very best imo.

By and large, I did enjoy the episode but its not without its glaring flaws that some people are happy to ignore, and more power to them. I do try but I wish little thing didn't bother me so much.
He didn't though? Like, when the Night King raised the dead, it was only a few moments until Drogon and Dany saved him? Then he was running towards the Godswood rather than fighting, just stabbing and killing when he had to. Hell, he even shut a gate behind him to stop himself being overrun. Of all the things that could be seen as bad and poor, this isn't one of them.

They killed off 6 characters, do you want the last three episodes to be extras wandering around aimlessly or something?

Decent episode overall but I can't shake this slightly disappointed feeling. Is that it for the Night King? GoT really missed a brilliant opportunity for some great drama by not turning a main character in this battle and having another tightly knit main character coming face to face with them. Could you imagine Brienne trying to fight off a wight Jaime?! I can't believe they squandered that opportunity. I thought at the very least we'd see Jorah having to strike down Lyanna Mormont or one of the night's watch having to stop Eddison.

That said, I was in a rage when Ned Stark was killed off. So I should probably be used to getting subverted at this stage.

The darkness was clearly there because the battle took place:

    A: at night

    B: during winter

C: during an ice storm as it progresses.

Why do people not get this? If they made it bright and summery there would actually be more room for complaint tbh.

    captain obvious there.

we are talking about the resultant print, not the setting, which is not unlike a cinema cam copy at times.

I don't know if it was intentional or because of budget constrictions

But the fact we could hardly see at times because it was dark added to the tension and drama

Those bits at the start where we could hear the undead but were seeing nothing, how could you not be sh1tting your pants at that

It was hard to make out what was going on for a lot of the ground fighting scenes too but if you're in the fight like that and a million things are happening in every direction you wouldn't be sure what was happening at all and things would seem to be blurry and happening too fast

Sorry but there’s no way they wanted fans of the show struggling to see what was going on. And it’s great that some people found that a good thing but if twitter is trending about the lighting issues after the show airs then it wasn’t a good decision to do that if it wasn’t forced i.e. covering up bad cgi.

Ah fcuk Twitter, it's for the eternally outraged.

The lighting gave a realistic view of a night time battlefield in the middle of winter. I dont know what the hullabaloo is.

it was so bad at times that I was expecting a Jamie Dornan cameo

Hope Clegane bowl doesn’t happen, who gives a ****?

Next episode will be Arya ninja killing everyone in kings landing wither her superpowers.
Nrxt episode just a whole ep of Gendry , Arya and hot pie catching up and going on rowing outings.
Last ep is tormund and briennes wedding , Sam makes a very witty speech , wedding singer is Ed Sheeran , everyone shows up and a good time is had by all.

    People would defend that

How many of them were sitting in the room having a drink in the last episode? That was the group we all care about. That was the group we thought we were about to see decimated. Did any of them die? Don’t think they did.

They've a tendency to make it too dark to see what's happening. After all we're trying to watch a TV show. Not an audio book.

the writing is all very sectioned off and linear tho -

1 -> build up to Winterfell

2 -> Winterfell battle - get rid of the Wights, White Walkers, Night King etc.

3 -> Move onto Cersei with predictable Mountain vs Hound etc

Would have been more skilful to keep the story-lines going to the finale

She is a very 1 dimensional character.

I disagree there Cersei has gone from a bitter wife, married to a pig in love with a dead woman to essentially the Mad Queen.delusional in her scheming at times but also ruthless. She is a scorned "pregnant" mourning mother up to her eyes in debt and in bed with a cutthroat pirate and have an undead monster by her side.

The one dimensional character was the Night King.

I genuinely think this was the writers fcuking with everyone. They set up what everyone thought was a classic "last night of the world" goodbye scene, then had all the characters survive, against all expectations. Guarantee you nearly all those people will be dead by the end of the series, if not by the end of the next episode.

They can just bring him back to life with some bollocks like they have done numerous times in the show. Pay attention

Clegane bowl would be disgusting fan service. Big bro has been dead for years. Who cares anymore. Can't get justice and revenge on someone who's basically dead.

Well Beric Dondarrion for one. Maybe I'm mistaken but was Jorah there as well?

It doesn't matter anyways the series isn't over yet.
Theres three episodes left for people to get what they want and have everyone die.

Which is what happens in every show ever :P

he's not dead, just very badly burned with no eyebrows left

I get why it was dark, still doesn't take away from the fact that, the first half hour in particular, was difficult to make out what was happening, especially when the action was up close and fast. I'd prefer to be able to see what's happening than having to squint at the screen.

Could have killed off a few more characters, namely Sam.

Also, Bran. What is the point of him? He fecked off on a flight with his ravens for ages to do what exactly.
Being a 3 eyed raven is pretty lame.

If everyone died in that room, people would claim it was far too predictable and telegraphed.

If not everyone died in that room, people would claim that the scene was pointless and misleading.

You can't win with people who want to feel aggrieved.

The Ravens found the Night King and goaded him out into the field. He didn't show himself until then.

He not lame, the term is disabled. :pac:

Sam is safe until the end I think.

Bran's warging will presumably pay off in a later episode.

I thought that too, but Bran kept warging long after the Night King entered the fight. I think those ravens were going somewhere else.

Pretty sure I saw him as one of the army of the dead. I knew it was him because he was the one hanging back and just copying the best bits of what all the others were doing and then trying to take all the credit.
