Exactly. I believe a few of the posters in this thread think of themselves as "funnymen" themselves. You can tell from their own dire attempts at witty barbs towards the comedians they're slagging, which can always be reduced to comments about someone's weight or appearance. Hilarious. They're just sickened someone else had the guts to do what they can't.

Of course there are people I don't like. The Rubberbandits for example. But some of the comments in here are from unhealthy, jealous minds without an ounce of real criticism.

Well said, Mr Hogan. You’d also get a fair amount of that sort of thing in the radio forum here - weird men who hate the medium of radio, and those who work on it, spending all their days listening to shows they hate just so they can comment about them. Don’t get it myself, but there’s a real undercurrent of anger and frustration there.

Wouldn’t be a fan of the Rubberbandits myself - that Blindboy guy doesn’t appear to be a comedian at all, but rather a bargain bin Bressie. That’s valid criticism though, and not just ‘drive by’ insults.

No, Blindboy is definitely something of a "faux-intellectual" in my view and one who is trying very hard to impart lessons or an education upon his audience. He reminds me of an Irish Jordan Peterson, actually: Men who are mediocre talents in their own fields (Peterson: academia/intellectualism, Blindboy: comedy/music) and who have branched out into cynical self-help guruism for angry young men, styling themselves as stand-up-comedian-preacher-philosopher-kings.

The difference being that Peterson is cynical in the sense that he's seen a gap in the market and Blindboy because he thinks his audience are too stupid to think for themselves. I don't know which is worse. :(

The title of the thread is unfunny Irish comedians, where is your contribution to agree or disagree? It’s just endless self righteous bollocks.

All you post is contradictory miserableness to anything posted on any topic. Give your insight and argument as what constitutes as funny by any one of the top three voted for there? Or tell us what’s funny.

As for ‘an ounce of real criticism’...they speak for themselves.

Fair play to whoever listed Rory’s scenes I’d say he had the pencil and notepad out.

His basic set up involves drinking and being hungover. So so funny after the 10th time....

Oh come now...'ye're all a load of begrudgers! Pure Irish Begrudgery etc'. When someone steps onto the stage at a venue that's meant to be entertainmen-be it comedy, music, spoken word poetry etc and they're bad at it... you get to call em out on it.
If not, then don't step into the entertainment arena.

If Prince marketed himself as a singer-and couldn't write or sing a song to save his life-he'd be called out on it.

Over here we call him Damien Dempsey.

I'm not a big fan of comedy in general (my son is though) but honestly you wouldn't "get it" if I posted what I think is funny. And if I did you would probably look for obscure gigs from early on in the comedian's career and think it's some sort of trump card to slaughter someone because of their appearance or whatever. Just because they don't make you laugh. What a hollow empty life to lead.

The problem with comedy nowadays is that very little of it can ever actually be very good, even amongst the pros, but there's also far more of it than ever before. And also performers need to expose themselves to the wider public earlier on in their career.

Whereas thirty to twenty years ago a person could practice their craft anonymously on stage in their local club for years before they could ever dream of making an appearance on television, these days first timer open mike gigs are posted online to be dissected and trashed by the likes of my friend Tomas here who would clearly love to be amongst their ranks but doesn't have the stones to go through with it.

First of all I never claimed anyone was an "Irish begrudger," please don't misquote me like that again.

However that was a great kicker at the end of the post there, a classic one-liner that would go down very well amongst the postal districts of the capital.

With wit like that I bet you'd be great on stage if you tried it yourself. Honestly, you should try it. Your friends all say you're funny, you should try it. Try it.

If you aren’t a fan of comedy what’s the point in contributing here? There’s a reason why I’m not over at the astronomy forum telling someone how crap their telescope is. Maybe just go and look for and argue about something you are actually interested in?

Comedy is great, I love it, I spend a fortune on it. This thread is more of an indication of hatred towards the type of comedy that greets us when we turn on the TV or radio , rte in particular, or perhaps wander into the international comedy club when aidans been at the sherry.

It's none of your concern why I'm posting here. In fact I would ask you in turn why you're trawling Youtube for clips of Allison Spittle from 2014 if you hate her so much. Maybe you should visit the astronomy forum every once in a while after all and learn a thing or two about perspective.

Well you clearly haven't seen his latest one about the current atm theft crisis, not only is it topical and "on the ball ' it's also absolutely hilarious. The premise is he's sleeping beside the atm comically in gaa socks, and just when you think he's got to the punchline by producing a hurl for protection he then pulls out a golf club thus creating a double bogger weapon, not since noel v ginnity have we seen such talent.

"The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence."
    Charles Bukowski

I think this rings true for a lot of comedy, music, cinema etc etc and it exists everywhere.
I also think a lot of people are great at self promotion for eg but the product their promoting just isn't very good. In a work environment its why a lot of people get promoted over others or end up in jobs where they really just don't belong in in the first place.
Alot of comedians get work this way. If you factor in that sometimes the people backing them are reasured that these comedians are never gonna rock the boat and their always gonna be reliable and turn up early for their gig and not do or say anything that's gonna hurt a TV network legal lawyers etc etc.
There are teachers who aren't very knowledgeable and and don't contribute anything to education but they're gonna be present, timley.. rain hail or shine and never miss a day or a deadline... I think its all relevant.

I think the good comedians are also part satirists and they take time to think of or see the joke behind the joke as opposed to using the first thing that comes into their heads.
Same with music... often it's the second or third idea that is appropriate rather than the first one.. the one that most other people are going to think of!
I'm not gonna critise bad comedians too much... we all have to eat. I guess they could be critised if they're holding more talented people back but realistically that often isn't the actual case at all.
I think we can all agree that we like our comedians to have suffered a bit.. or have had a few knock backs and some hard times. They have more source material to draw from.

That Rory’s stories is working for RTÉ on some gaa show not as an “entertainer” but as an analyst sitting beside people who actually know something about playing gaa at a high level, sad times.

Clubs actually book him as a special guest for their dinner dances etc wtf

I don't want to be on the stage-I know the difference between 'can crack a joke once or twice' and 'going up on stage with witty observations of everyday life and technology'.
    I don't want to be on stage-but I know a bad comedian/ musician/ artist from a good one.
If you want to be something-work on being good at it... and that's why bad one's stand out.

Nobody would hire a bad electrician, for example-but bad entertainers seem to always get a platform.

I did see it. I actually pointed boardsies to it a few pages back. I said it had to be seen to be believed!!

I just googled “Allison Spittle + Sh*te”, came up as the first result, wouldn’t really call it trawling. But seeing as you’ve watched it, can you give us your genuine critique on her talents?

Thanks for the recommendation on the astronomy forum, but I got chucked off it for being a clueless annoying c*nt that would argue about all sorts of shįte I had neither an interest nor clue about. Fair enough I suppose.

Dust off that victor meldrew collectors boxset and break your bollocks laughing for the evening and relax for a bit. Or start hitting pornhub, you need something to take the edge off.

No offence but you’re not doing a great job convincing me you won’t be chucked out of this forum for the same reason.

    Clever?

They are doing Irish Mammy jokes. Knock Knock jokes would be a step up.

none taken, particularly due the double negative English language stuff you’re struggling with in that post.

But anyway back on topic here, what do you make of her? Gas craic? You haven’t really given any type of comment to back up any of these ‘comedians’.

Good and bad electricians is not subjective they either fix/install something correctly or they don't. Different example perhaps?

Well, I was thinking more word of mouth-never underestimate word of mouth. If you're bad, folks will hear about it.
Similar to a bad builder-people talk.

When you're an entertainer, we know if you're good or bad-because there you are, onstage, proving it.

Was wondering who would be the warm up for bert kreischer last night, expecting the usual ****e... However he brought the supports with him from the US and it turned out to be the best stand up show of the year.... Laughing my arse off for all 3 acts... Savage night

    The 2 Johnnies:

Putting on a forced rural accent, a wig and talking about GAA and drinking with no jokes.

    NO JOKES

They are no different to Bachelors in Trouble.

I know one of them and he does sound like that. He's from Cahir. Used to be a massive metal head, had the hair and everything.

He's looking well these days tbh.

This can't be legitimate without the likes of Fred Cooke, Mario Rosenstock, Bernard O Shea. Absolutely not worst of the worst Irish comedians. Usually allotted spare slots on the Late Late
