Oldest Footballer to Win All Ireland

    bit of a jimmy mcgee question here, but does anyone know who was the oldest gaelic football player to win an all-ireland medal? its a work bet im trying to win.......best answer so far is Dinny Allen of Cork in 1989 final who was aged 37 at the time. Can anyone improve on that? its a toughie question.

    it's a hard one alright i think Martin Furlong was around 37 or 38 when he would his 3rd medal in 1982 again Kerry.

    On Wikipedia it says he was born in 1946 so he would have been 35 in 82

    right fair enough you could be right, he did win a minor in 1964 so that would have left him 35 in 1982

    Barney Roice from Wexford was, I think, 38 when he won his fourth All Ireland in 1918. Reason he above any of the other wexford players stick out is because he won 6 Leinster titles in a row, and 4 AI titles in a row, and didnt play in any of them.

    Barney Royce sounds like a proper GAA legend if thats true!! he also leads the current list of oldest player with an all ireland medal if thats true. Got an email back from the museum in Croke Park HQ. Unfortunately they dont have any records there on who the oldest gaelic footballer is to win an all ireland medal :rolleyes: the search continues!!

    According to 'The GAA Book of Lists' by Eoghan Corry (p7) Larry Cribbin was 41 when he won with Kildare in the 1919 final. However the 1911 census :

    suggests he was 39, which fits in with his obituary:

    Either way, the Kildare defender-turned-goalkeeper would appear to have the strongest claim to this title.

    Nope - retired in 1991 aged 34

    Won a minor and U21 All-Ireland in the same year in 75

    If Kerry win next year Tomas O Se would be 35 which would be fair going given the way the game has gone.

    Josie Munnelly (1916 - July 1996) won a Junior medal for Mayo in 1957 when he was 41 years.

    Surprised no-one has mentioned Stephen Cluxton in relation this.

    He was 35 last September which puts him on course to at least equal any player of modern era.

    I know that Jim Ware(RIP) from Waterford is the oldest hurler to win an All Ireland at 41 years old, in 1948. He as also the oldest All Ireland winning captain

    I believe the correct answer is Dan O'Keefe, native of Fermoy who was reputedly 40 when he won his last medal with Kerry,

    No. Oldest captain maybe, but Kilkenny had a man of 43 in 1922. I can't remember his name.

    Peter McDermont won All Ireland in 1954 and he was 36. That Meath team is the oldest team to win Sam beating kerry, stopping one greatest kerry teams ever winning the three in a row.
    Most of the Meath players were well over 30.
    And also Meath had one of the youngest team ever to win Sam. The two youngest teams to ever win Sam were kerry in 1975 and Meath in 1996. Both won All-Irelands with 6 or 7 under 21 players. It wud have been like kerry winning the All Ireland last year with Clifford O Se and another 4 or 5 under 21 players. Most teams win Alll Irelands with players in the mid 20s late 20s , a group of players playing together over a 3 to 4 to 5 period. They win 2 to 3 provincial titles and then push for Sam.Its very unusual to win All Irelands with a pile of players actually eligible for the under 21 grade in that year. Its very unusual to win Sam with a pile of players well into their 30s.

    That's the reason why I don't think mayo will win it
    They didn't refresh their team soon enough

    Thats true. Cork had under 21 players that won All Ireland in 1966. Thats the youngest team to ever win hurling All Ireland title. Very similar to football youngest teams. 1966 Cork hurling All Ireland winning team, 1975 kerry football All Ireland winning team and 1996 Meath All Ireland football winning team all came from nowhere to win liam and Sam.

    No one gave Cork a chance in early 1966. Tippeareys great team were the dominant team of the period winning 4 All Irelands in 5 years in early 60s. Kerry also were seen as unlikely winners in 1975 in football . Cork had won the All-Ireland brillantly two years earlier and where seens as Dublin's main challenger for the All Ireland in 1975. Kerry were complete outsiders in 1975. The same with Meath in 1996. Carlow were actually favourites with the bookies in first round of leinster championship match with Meath , after Eire og did so well in leinster club . And Meath were hammered the year beforehand v Dublin meant Meath were complete outsiders in 1996.

    The only other teams that came from nowhere to win Sam in the last 50 years were Dublin in 1974 and Galway in 1998. Dublin werent a young team but Heffernan brought them from div 2 to All Ireland champions in 12 months. Galway were actually in div 3 when they won All Ireland in 1998. They were in div 3 in 1997 and did not get promoted. So they were a div 3 team in 1998. But GAA all teams in 1998 were put in a hat and drawn. So Dublin and kerry were in div 3 in 1998. And divsion 1 was full of div 3 and div 4 teams. But Galway were technicaly a div 3 team in 1998. ( Only Armagh who were in divsion 2 in 2002 and Galway who were in divsion 3 in 1998 are the only teams outside division 1 to win Sam in last 40 years ).

    Galway did have a young team in 1998. So were Tyrone in 2003. But kerry 1975 and Meath were youngest because players like Pat Spillane in 1975 and Darren Fay in 1996 were 20 and still under 21 players.

    The unsusal thing about Meath team to the kerry team in 1975 and Cork team in 1966 was kerry football team in 1975 and Cork hurling team in 1966 , players on both teams won senior and under 21 All Ireland double in the same year. Meath won senior in 1996 but the same players didnt win under 21 All Ireland in 1996. They were beaten by Cavan in All Ireland under 21 semi final.
