Lately there’s been multiple incidents of JCBs etc driving down Main Streets and breaking down banks robbing cash and gangs getting away with huge money

    Where were the guards?

    About 6 hours too late.

yeah but now they'll be 6 hours late in turbans

You reckon it was because they took that long to do up their turbans?

My point is this is a PR job to distract from huge failures.

Its funny how it all started. We want turban-wearing Sikh police because the UK has them.
The UK police have them because the British Army has them.
The British Army has them because the only way to conquer the vast sub-continent of India was to use one tribe against another - divide and conquer.

They found Sikhs to be the best fighters, so they recruited Sikhs, let them wear the turbans and ceremonial daggers, and sent them off to fight the Muslims and Hindus.

So if it all seems a bit tribalist and divisive ... yeah that was the original idea.

Hindu and Muslim joined forces in the rebelliobn of 1857.
They judged that Sikhs would neither side with Hindu or Muslim.

I have to side with the dark side on this one. It's a silly exemption. Why should they be the only ones allowed to take chances with their safety? I do note that employers are protected from liability but surely the point of hard hat rules goes beyond liability.

It's interesting you think you're on the jedi side of this debate.

    Prefer the stance France takes.

Surely someone has asked if gardas are allowed to wear burkas now? Will come in handy at the next protest that needs to be quashed. The leftists won't know what to make of it.

It’s an exemption which allows them to integrate into society as contributing members to that society.

    Yikes you're past saving amigo.

Oh hardly, we’re not exactly over-run with Sikhs in this country. You’re exaggerating something that is highly unlikely to ever happen.

I understand the objective, I just think it has limits. In relation to the Gardaí, I don't think someone should be exempt from wearing a helmet in a riot situation.

    Aimed at Joe Schmo

Via the mainstream newspapers and web sites

I’m sure they can work something out, they’ve managed to do it successfully in other countries, and I think there’s only a population of less than 2,000 here in Ireland, been here since the ‘70’s. I think it’s time they were permitted to enter AGS, and surely one would hope that there wouldn’t be any riot situations that they would have to become involved in.

I feel like we should be moving away from this religious stuff, not towards it. Confine your beliefs to your home and your own time, and wear the standard uniform as provided. Isn't that by definition the whole point of a "uniform", that it's the same for everyone?

It is. But if you say you are superstitious, then the rules dont apply.

Imagine a turban wearing Sikh sent to deal with a bunch of troublesome Dublin gurriers, they would give him such a slagging " whats that bandage doin' on your head pal, wha ?" And what happens in the middle of an arrest if a Muslim has to face Mecca for prayers ??

What about some REAL equality, and allow over 35 year olds to join?

    Good news :D

Govt set to lift age barrier for entry to An Garda Síochána after ruling

Makes sense. It was a very old-fashioned concept preserved there with that 35 year thing. I know myself and a few of my sporty pals (early 40s) can run and lift most 20 somethings into the ground. Age is not a component of merit.

How do you see this different to the abuse they give every other Garda?

I think the issue is the retirement age prevents you working to full pension.

I agree to an extent. I don't think that as a society we're ready to ditch religion. Look at the hoopla about a few schools changing patronage.

Because religion is a part of many peoples lives I think we should make some efforts to accommodate it. So long as the religion doesn't impact the job they do and the state is not endorsing a particular religion it should be ok. That means that if a teacher, nurse or garda have a head veil, or ash or whatever on their heads, that's fine. If their belief stops them from doing their duties, then it shouldn't be allowed.
It's about creating a space where people of different faiths are comfortable without endorsing any particular faith or giving a particular faith more freedoms than any other.

And fitness isn't even necessary for some of the roles that the Gardai may perform. There's plenty of technical roles that could be filled by someone with a lower level of fitness.

Remove religion from schools while simultaneously add it to the police force:rolleyes:

Under 35 is still a requirement in the current 2019 campaign.

I know more people 15 years older than 35, that are fitter than 20 year olds:P

But then again, if you knew what the job entailed at 40, you wouldn't do it (unless you were already there and institutionalised) and at 20 you know no better :)

It's strange that a majority white Catholic country would have a majority white Catholic police force. ;)
